Lesson 4/21 “Muloobinba gets the name Newcastle”

Colonial Names for Newcastle and its features

Place these in the correct locations of the Aboriginal NSW: A Pictorial Study Guide Map you

have been given.

- Coal Harbour

- Coal Island

- Hacking’s Point

- John Hunter River

- Kingstown

- Macquarie’s Pier

- Limeburners' Bay

- Colliers Point

- Coal River

- the Cedar Arms

- Braithwaite’s Point

Timeline of Newcastle’s early history (1797-1900) – modify to create a

student worksheet or use as material for quiz

Day Month Year Event

9 September 1797 Shortland finds and names the Hunter River after John Hunter, while pursuing

Irish convicts escaped from Sydney Cove. Stays one night in the shelter of

‘Hacking’s Point’ – Nobbys

1801 Convict camp called “King’s town” briefly established in Newcastle area to

mine coal and cut timber. It dissolved within one year but resulted in

potentially the first coal mine in the Southern Hemisphere, at ‘Collier’s Point’

– Fort Scratchley

15 June 1801 Lieutenant James Grant hoists the Union Jack on ‘Hacking’s Point’

25 June 1801 Shortland’s names revised: ‘Hacking’s Island’ officially renamed ‘Coal

Island’ by Patterson (1755-1810) and ‘Braithwaite’s Point’ officially renamed

‘Collier’s Point.’

The ‘Coal River’ Area in general (Newcastle) given the name ‘Coal Harbour’

30 March 1804 Coal Harbour established as a penal settlement; a secondary isolation

punishment for the particularly unmanageable or undesirable convicts in

Sydney Cove. The move of convicts led by Charles Menzies. He is

appointment as Commandant of the new settlement.

Population of Newcastle all convicts and soldiers. Informal names they use

are ‘the camp,’ ‘hellhole’ and ‘city of thieves’

Governor King chooses the name ‘Newcastle’ over the current confusion

between ‘Coal River Settlement’ and ‘Coal Harbour.’

Early 1800s – c. 1804-1810 Newcastle has reputation as a place of transience. Criminals sent here before

transfer to other places and settlements, very poor living conditions made it an

undesirable post for soldiers and living place for settlers.

1805-1808 Menzies resigns as commandant; Charles Throsby new Commandant of

Newcastle

c.1808 William Bligh deposed as NSW Governor and arrested

28 December 1809 Lachlan Macquarie arrives to replace William Bligh

1 January 1810 Lachlan Macquarie signed in as new Governor of NSW

6 October 1810 First official record of the name ‘Nobbys’ for ‘Coal Island

1822 Record of unofficial name for Nobbys – ‘Booby Island’

5 August 1818 Construction begins on ‘Macquarie’s Pier’ – the breakwater. Although

sponsored by Governor Macquarie, no record of whose initiative it was.

Construction lasted 28 years.

1814 Decision made to expand Newcastle to accommodate overflow of convicts in

Parramatta gaol.

Colonel George Molle, arrives (in Sydney) with the 46th Regiment early as

lieutenant-governor over doubts concerning Macquarie’s benevolence

towards convicts

19 February 1814 – 30 June 1816 Thomas Thompson new Commandant of Newcastle; he was previously

Captain Thompson, captain role succeeded by Wallis.

11 May 1817 Lancelot Edward Threlkeld arrives in Sydney, will later (c.1824) be appointed

the missionary in Lake Macquarie/Newcastle area

1818 Caricature painting of Biraban by convict artist Browne

7 August 1818 James? Esquire draws a map of Newcastle: possibly the first.

1 January 1819 Captain Morisset appointed major. He assumes the supervision of the

construction of the breakwater

26 September 1819 Commissioner John Thomas Bigge sent from England, after anti-Macquarie

lobbies were successful in the house of commons, to investigate Australian

government conduct and write a report and inquiry for the crown. He

determines that, after 3 years of observation, the Australian government is not

severe enough in the discipline of convicts.

20 January 1820 Sketch drawn showing the construction of the breakwater

1821 Biraban accompanies Francis Allman to site of future penal settlement ‘Port

Macquarie.’ Helps to establish it.

He subsequently returns to Lake Macquarie and assumes “leadership amongst

his people, being singled out as 'tribal king' of the district under Governor

Lachlan Macquarie”

4 November 1821 Lieutenant Close appointed to assist with the ‘public works’ of Newcastle,

including public buildings, infrastructure, etc.

12 February 1822 Macquarie sails for England after many attempts to resign are finally

successful

4 January 1823 Governor Brisbane visits Newcastle

31 January 1823 Governor Brisbane orders a ‘cease of work’ on the breakwater by convicts.

Breakwater currently at 950ft

1823

3 March 1824 Newcastle officially opened to all free settlers. Status is changed from penal

settlement to free settlement. Port Macquarie is its replacement. It is named

the new penal settlement by Francis Allman, Newcastle’s last commandant.

April 1824 Breakwater, with no further construction since Jan 1823, is examined for

potential by John Busby

December 1824 Francis Allman appointed commandant at Newcastle on return from Port

Macquarie. He was to be the last (see June 1827)

1825 Thelkeld commences missionary work at Reid's Mistake with Biraban as his

principal assistant

1826 While in Newcastle, Thelkeld publishes Specimens of a Dialect of the

Aborigines of New South Wales

June 1827 Office of commandant officially abolished

1830 Governor (Sir) Ralph Darling publicly honours Biraban at the annual

conference with the Aboriginals at Parramatta with a brass plate inscribed

'Barabahn, or MacGil, Chief of the Tribe at Bartabah, on Lake Macquarie; a

Reward for his assistance in reducing his Native Tongue to a written

Language'.

Newcastle’s stats:

· 9 named streets

· 192 building lots

· 40 “not-so-grand” houses

1832 Investigations to reduce height of Nobbys and finish the breakwater

1833-1836 Sundry reports of minor work on the breakwater

1834 While in Newcastle, Threlkeld publishes An Australian Grammar,

comprehending the Principles and Natural Rules of the Language, as spoken
