Tolerance and understanding are promoted as we respect diversity. As parents we all want our children to feel happy, successful and safe. As teachers, we want the same thing. It is easy to remember we are all on the same team when everything is going well. When

things go wrong, it can sometimes be a little bit harder. Our children are learning how to manage conflict, disappointment and complex social relationships. Much of what they learn will come from watching us.We always welcome feedback, especially when it’s positive! If you have questions or concerns about your child or an incident that has occurred at school, contact your child’s teacher in the first instance. Teachers and parents often have information that when shared, can help each to understand the bigger picture. If the issue is particularly serious or relates to school or Departmental systems, contact the office to arrange a meeting with me. Staff will always be prepared to work respectfully with parents towards a positive outcome for students. If professional responsibilities mean we can’t speak with you immediately, we will contact you to make another time. Schools must remain safe and respectful places for all to work, learn, visit and enjoy. YEAR 1 : In Stage 1 we have been measuring, recording, comparing and estimating lengths and distances using uniform informal units, meters and centimetres. It has been wonderful to see students roaming around the school measuring things with meter rulers, hands and feet.

In maths we have just finished a couple of weeks focusing on addition. When we play maths games we often enact or talk about our strategies Stage 1 have started working on multiplication and learning about the cookie strategy.

Spanish:¡HOLA ! Yo soy Evelyn Green but kids at school call me Miss Evie or Señorita Evie. Soy de Colombia. I am the Spanish teacher of group 1 in all stages from Kindy to Year 6. I have been in MWPS for almost 8 years and I am in love with my job of teaching Spanish. ¡ME GUSTA MUCHO ENSEÑAR ESPAÑOL!I put my heart and soul in my lessons because I want my children to learn as much as they can before they leave primary school and hopefully one day they can speak Español very fluently and explore the Latino and Spanish Culture. I am also a Latin singer, so my classroom is always filled with music and dancing activities… Fantástico! Hasta pronto amigos.

Spanish:I am Catherine Rodriguez and I am the Spanish teacher Kindy and Early Stage 1. I have been a language and preschool teacher for over 10 years. I think of teaching as an opportunity to change the world and touch lives. I began working at Marrickville West at the end of 2017 and I really think it is the best. This year I want to take Spanish to a different level by developing love for the language and culture. My kindy children will understand more about their school and the world they live in while years 1 and 2 will take their language to a different level. Please take any opportunity to talk about the games, songs and activities that take place in the Spanish class and also plant the seed of knowledge of other cultures and languages at home Feliz 2019!

Chinese:Ni Hao! I am Miss Cheng, the Chinese teacher at MWPS. I have been teaching Chinese for over 4 years. I love to incorporate music and painting in my class because it is a great part of Chinese culture. While teaching I enjoy sharing my culture and traditions. This year I want Marrickville West children to be able to sing a few songs in Chinese and also use simple Chinese characters. Xiexie (thank you)

Arabic:Marhabba! I am Miss Suzanne, the Arabic teacher. I have been at MWPS for 3 years and this is my second year of teaching Arabic here. Coming from a background in teaching arts my approach to languages is very influenced by this. Children in my class love being creative while they learn. When MWPS children come to my class they know they won’t only learn a language but also songs, games and art. Creativity is my way to motivate my students!

Vietnamese:I am Catherine Nguyen. I have been a Vietnamese teacher for 20 years and I started working at Marrickville West public School this year. I want to help my Vietnamese students to learn Vietnamese Language and Culture. My experience allows me to cater for different kinds of learning and diverse levels of knowledge in the classroom while delivering interesting and enjoyable lessons. I like preparing various activities and songs that aim to enrich student’s understanding of Vietnam and its culture.

Opera ExcursionOn Monday, 4th March, classes 6E and 6C caught a train at Dulwich Hill train station. Mrs. Whitfield, Ms. Suzanne, Ms. Geri and Ms. Basma were there to look after us along with our class teachers. From school we walked to Dulwich Hill train station where we caught a train. We got off the train at Central and walked to the Opera Centre. When we arrived, we walked into the building and saw many paintings and photos of special actors. We dumped our bags on a table and went into the studio where the scene was set. There we saw the governor of NSW, other very special people and students from two other schools. The musical was called By the Light of the Moon. When it started, we saw the familiar faces of the actors that performed on Friday and some new ones. Their performance was flawless with lots of humor and enchanting songs. After the musical, we had lunch in a big park then we played some games. When half an hour passed, we knew it was time to head back. When the train arrived, we got on and we were all exhausted. We arrived at Dulwich Hill train station and walked back to school. We all enjoyed the musical and would like to see it again.

By Ethyn and Elyssa (Year 6 vice captains)

By the Light of the MoonOn Friday 1st march Marrickville West Public School was lucky enough to experience the production of By The Light of the Moon. It was performed by Opera Australia. The production had interesting characters called Agatha the cat, Cedric the Owl, Queen of Hearts, Mary Miss Muffets the spider, Old King Cole and Three Blind Mice. Our favourite characters were Queen of Hearts and Old King Cole. The actors for this show were amazing and I’m sure all of MWPS would love to see another show by Opera Australia again. We recommend for years K-3 as this show was based on fairy tale characters. Hopefully they come back next year and perform another amazing production for use.

THE KOALA GIRLSYou’ve probably seen us in the Newsletter before and at our stalls. We’d like you to know that with your help we have raised around $900. This went to Port Stephen Koalas. Our names are Katharine, Olive, Evie, Elyssa, Esther, Lily, Elina and Lucy. We are the “Koala Girls”.We have successfully adopted seven cute koalas on Port Stephens. The leftover money has been used to support leaf-picking machines which are used to pick healthy food for the koalas. Our local MP, Jo Haylen has asked to meet us to talk about more ways we can raise money for other koalas in need.We have matching t-shirts that have our names on them and say “Koala Girls”. We all pitched in to buy the light green t-shirt, then Olive and her mum ironed on our names, “Koala Girls” and a picture. We would like to thank our families and teachers for helping us to organise our stalls. Thank you also to the students of Marrickville West for buying our products. A special thanks to Tori (parent and community gardener) for donating the strawberry plants for us to sell.

MUSICCREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS

Billionaire Boy excursionThis week, as part of our 2019 Creative & Performing Arts initiative, all students in yrs 3&4 enthusiastically set off to Parramatta Riverside Theatre to see the production of Billionaire Boy. Our excursion was a big success with all our students enthusiastically boarding the buses followed by lunch in Prince Alfred Park before we filed into the theatre. We all became totally engaged with the humour, songs and dances in the show, reminding us that friendship and loyalty cannot be bought, even if you are a Billionaire Boy!Our Librarian, Mrs Walker, has the book “Billionaire Boy” available in the library for borrowing , with a range of other fun titles from the same author.

Book Swap Boxes from Whoa to Go!16 Book Swap Boxes are heading to 16 Child and Family Health Centres around Canterbury and the Inner West. This is so parents with newborn babies can enjoy books while they wait. The journey of the boxes starts at Redfern Community Shed, Carriage Works, where volunteers put boxes together from recycled timber. After this, they come to Connect Marrickville where they are painted red. Then, they go to be decorated, just like KJ did last year in the Book Swap Box that went to The Ritz. Finally the Book Swap Boxes are filled with pre-loved books suitable for babies to 5 year olds and placed in places of waiting around the community.Have you seen any Book Swap Boxes around Marrickville? Maybe one day we’ll do a treasure hunt.

There are activities, people to meet, food hampers and a free BBQ. Every month there is a theme. On 28th March, it will be International Women’s Day run by Connect Marrickville. Did you know that Louisa Lawson, who lived in Marrickville, was Henry Lawson’s mother, also a poet and writer? She started the first magazine for women and children in Australia in 1888 and it ran until 1903. Called “The Dawn”, some of the March activities will be around the mosaic in the park, as well as yoga.

Bring plates, cups and eating utensils for your family and join the long table down the basketball course in Henson Playground. Stay for campfire marshmallows before everything wraps up at 9pm.

Movie nightWe had an incredible turnout for our first Movie Night of the year, curated by Mighty Nice. ‘Lost & Found’ had a huge impact on a lot of the audience, the quiet hush spoke volumes, and we heard that some tears were even shed. Softly & Darren want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting this little idea. They raised about $1400 for the P&C, and we all appreciate their massive effort.

Huge thanks also to our Crack Team of Canteen and Door Peeps: Sandra, Tanya, Ange, Lynne, Ben Estelle, Alex & Alex, Isabel and Shelley for an EPIC effort of juggling that queue! Extra thanks to Estelle and Alex Ross for early shopping trips too! Thanks also to Mr Kelly for sticking around to help on the AV tech side!

Election DayMarrickville West will be a polling site for voting in the NSW State Election on Saturday 23rd of March so the P&C will be holding a BBQ and Cake Stall to raise funds for the school. If you can assist on either the cake stall or the BBQ please sign up online via the MWPS P&C Facebook page. We will need donations of cakes/biscuits/slices etc for the cake stall and would ask if you are able to contribute to please drop off as early as you can on the day. We are also looking for people to help make coffee in the canteen so anyone with barista skills would be most welcome. Lastly please encourage your family and friends to come and vote at Marrickville West!

CanteenDid you know you can order your child’s lunch orders easily without getting off the sofa? Set up an account quick and easy with QuickCliq at quickcliq.com.au

Orders for the day must be made before 9am and Sushi is still a pre-order on Tuesday for Wednesday lunch.

We also are looking for a dedicated Canteen Leader that can liaise with the P&C and Wendy with open communication to work on menu, suppliers and organise rosters for café volunteers. Sound like something you may be interested in? Contact Lindy Alwis at [email protected]

DID YOU KNOW?: Thanks to your Voluntary General Contribution to the school YOU are a P&C member!

Pulse:-The first P&C meeting of the year was held on February 21st with a full agenda to start 2019. Here is a brief overview of what is happening

• Lots of new and existing families enjoyed the Welcome BBQ on Friday 15th with gorgeous weather making for a great evening. Many thanks to everyone who helped organise the evening, and to Raine and Horne Marrickville who generously supplied the sausages and bread rolls and did an excellent job cooking on the night.

• Funding of $4000 as been secured for a mural on the side wall of the substation facing the eco garden so we are keen to hear from any local artists who might be interested in this project. Email [email protected] with a contact and sample work.

• The P&C was informed that the installation of air conditioning in identified schools under the NSW Government program, which includes Marrickville West is progressing but will take some time.

• We need some volunteers to help build a new cubby house, which is being constructed offsite at MakerSpace. The project manager is available Tuesdays and Thursdays

over the next few weeks so if anyone is able to assist on these days that would be awesome.

• The Get and Give BBQ held at Woolworths Marrickville on February 6th was a runaway success with shoppers donating an amazing amount of groceries for the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre in Newtown. Huge kudos to Softly Dunstan who organised and managed the entire event.

• There will be a BBQ held at the school on election day, 23rd March as the school will be a voting site. We will need people to help throughout the day so please look out for our call for volunteers.

• The recycle cage is almost full so will be emptied shortly ready to start again. Thanks to everyone for bringing in their plastic containers and placing them in the yellow recycling bins next to the cage.

• The street library has been put up just outside the Henson street gate – please feel free to borrow, donate or take children’s books.

• We are also looking for an assistant Band Coordinator that would like to learn the ropes for next year.

NEXT P&C MEETING: Thurs Feb 21 7–9pmin the Staff Room. All parents are welcome to come along and learn more about the school and give their ideas on how to make it a better place.
