WWI BattlefieldsOn the Somme, a tour will follow the events of the 1st July 1916 in considerable detail. Although the events of that day were in many ways unique, examining why the British failed to break through both then and in the later fighting, gives considerable insight into the reasons for the prolonged stalemate on the Western Front. Following the events of 1917, a tour to the Ypres area concentrates on the period from the beginning of The Messines Offensive in June to the end of The Passchendaele Offensive in November.

Thiepval Memorial & Visitor CentreThis is the largest memorial to the missing on the Western Front, containing the names of 73,412 men who died from 1915 to 1917 and have no known graves. The new visitor centre houses an informative exhibition designed to aid understanding of the history of Thiepval during WWI.

Newfoundland Park, Beaumont HamelUndoubtedly one of the largest and best-preserved trench memorials on the Western Front. Just outside the park lies Hawthorn Crater, and within it are the ‘Danger Tree’ and remains of the British Front Line. The German Front Line can be seen across No Man’s Land. Canadian guides can be pre-booked free of charge between May and November.

Other Key Visits• Ulster Tower • Irish Peace Tower

• Lochnagar Crater, La Boisselle • Albert, 1916 Museum

• Delville Wood Museum, Longueval • Tank Corps Memorial

In Flanders Fields ExhibitionThis superb state-of-the-art, interactive museum is now an even richer experience with the updated larger museum. Covering most aspects of the war in Flanders, each visitor will receive a wristband that will take them on a journey in the museum through the eyes of someone who was there. An educational pack, study resources and education room are available.

Sanctuary Wood Museum & Hill 62This fascinating visit shows well-preserved, original British trenches. The museum consists of two rooms housing artefacts and photographs from WWI.
