Local Juniour Team looking to build onfamous footballing history.

Cameron ready for newchallenge at St Roch’s

After a very disappointing season last year St.Roch’s Juniors have put their faith in ex Blo-chairn Star man Andy Cameron as the new Man-ager.

The Candy finished 3rd bottom of the CentralSecond Division last season and found them-selves on the verge of closing on more than oneoccasion as this proud old club had went 4months without a competitive game due to thebad weather. The bad weather and relatively poorseason had an impact on people going throughthe door which meant the club were scraping byfrom week to week. A number of sponsors werekind enough to offer support and the Candy livedto fight another year – their 96th actually.

Pre –season has been going well with over 30players attending training – many of whom hailfrom local communities like Blackhill, Barmul-loch, Germiston and Royston. Season ticket saleshave been encouraging and due to the numbersof young people who have shown an interest theclub have introduced the Candy Rochers club.Season tickets can still be purchased at theground for £30, with £15 for concessions andunder 16’s (Candy Rochers) are free.

The new manager spoke to the Royston Rag andhe was happy with the developments at the park,Andy said “I absolutely loved my time at Blo-chairn and met some brilliant people and had agreat deal of success – I leave the club in thegoods hands of the new Chairman Gerry Hughes– I know he will do well. When the opportunitycame up to manage St. Roch’s it is not one that Icould refuse – I have always encouraged playersto be all they can be so took my own advice andmade the massive leap to the Juniors. It is a lotdifferent as I now have my own coaching team(Allan, Chris and Robert) who have been bril-liant and a group of committee members who doall the work off the park – this allows me to con-centrate fully on team matters.

I am looking forward to the season and get thefeeling that our group of players have an under-standing of what it means to represent St.Roch’s. Off the park we have seen massive im-provements with 50 odd season tickets (the 1st toFather Joe of the Parish) already snapped up, amural to the great Jimmy Mc Grory completeand some very generous sponsors support uswith new kit and tracksuits – to coin an old foot-ball phrase  - there is definitely a buzz about theplace.

On the park we have done really well in the pre-season friendly recording victories against thelikes of Queens Park, St. Anthony's and Living-stone – the league cup section games start nextweek and it will be a true test for the new squadas we face 4 clubs from higher division whohave given us a bit of a doing the last few years. Our goal is to compete in the section and ensurethat we are ready for the league campaign kick-ing off on the 30th of August. We play Shettles-ton, Bellshill, Petershill and Thorniewood in thesection and if we are not at our very best theycould give is a bit of an early season lesson – thatit why it is important for everyone at the club torealise that we need to work really hard all thetime to get St. Roch’s back on track.

I hope that people from within the communitycan get behind the club and if there are any localbusinesses who would consider offering sponsor-ship it would be great.”
