The Commonwealth Games is a multinational, multi-sport event which features competitions involving thousands of elite athletes from members of the Commonwealth of Nations. Organized every four years, they are the third-largest multi-sport event in the world, after the Summer Olympic Games and the Asian Games. As well as many Olympic sports, the Games also include some sports that are played mainly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens, gymnastics and netball. The Games are overseen by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), which also controls the sporting programmed and selects the host cities. The host city is selected from across the Commonwealth, with eighteen cities in seven the event was first held in 1930 under the title of the British Empire Games.

The event was renamed as the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, the British Commonwealth Games in 1970, and gained its current title in 1978. Only six teams have attended every Commonwealth Games: Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Australia has been the highest scoring team for ten games, England for seven and Canada for one.countries having hosted it. There are currently 54 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, and 71 teams participate in the Games. The four Home Nations of the United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – send separate teams to the Commonwealth Games (unlike at the Olympic Games, where the United Kingdom sends a single team), and individual teams are also sent from the British Crown dependencies – Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man – and many of the British overseas territories. The Australian external territory of Norfolk Island also sends its own team, as do the Cook Islands and Niue, two states in free association with New Zealand.

The Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi (OC CWG Delhi 2010) came into being on 10 February 2005, as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act 1860. It was resolved by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) in the General Assembly held in Jamaica on 13 November 2003 to entrust the organizing and hosting of the XIX Commonwealth Games to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). As per Clause 2(C) of the Host City Contract, signed by the Government of India(GOI), the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD), IOA, and CGF, IOC has delegated the organization of the Games to the OC CWG Delhi 2010.The OC CWG Delhi 2010 has set itself the goal of conducting the best Commonwealth Games to date, including the provision of impeccable standards of service to athletes, officials and the general public, in close collaboration with its partners.

It hopes to set new benchmarks for other Host nations with regards to urban sustainable development by showcasing excellent infrastructure and facilities which could be used by the society and the general public for generations to come. The XIX Commonwealth Games “Promise for Indians”… Surprised! This is the first time the government has taken “Indians” into account with respect to the Commonwealth Games… wondering why? Simple answer is that in all likelihood the Games won’t happen and then government can easily say that the development was done for the citizens and not for foreigners which in my opinion is a big bunch of bull.24 flyovers, 75 aerobridges, 1285 kms of better roads, 5000 low-floor buses, 80 new metro destinations, 11 world-class sports venues, 59 hectare games village, restoration of 46 national monuments and thousands of job opportunities… FOR YOU, FOR DECADES.Somehow this is what i could understand.

24 flyovers still in construction, 75 aerobridges… most of which are on paper only, 1285 kms of pothole roads, 5000 low-floor buses yet to be seen, 80 new metro disasters, 11 third-class sports venues, 59 hectare games village already sold to HNI’s, restoration of 46 monuments which we would not care if not the for games and thousands of fraud opportunities for the politicians… FOR YOU, FOR DECADES. The historic city of Delhi will look its best for visitors during the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. One of the legacies of the event will be that it will leave behind a city much more beautiful and charming than it currently is. The colonial city-centre and Delhi’s main shopping area, Connaught Place, has been given a new façade and is already experiencing a resurgence. Rajpath, the main avenue in Lutyens’ Delhi, is being rejuvenated. The city’s monuments, an integral part of the rich heritage of Delhi’s past, are being cleaned and revitalised.New international standard signages and bus shelters will add to Delhi’s modern look as will new public conveniences such as call booths, shopping areas, etc.
