Teen Battle of the Books

Randall Enos, RCLS Youth Services Consultant

On Saturday, September 10 while tennis stars were battling it out at the U.S. Open in

Queens, Teen Battle of the Books stars were battling it out at the 8th Annual RCLS Teen

Battle of the Books at SUNY Orange in Middletown.

Fifteen stellar teams representing RCLS member libraries competed for the honor of being

the 2016 RCLS Teen Battle of the Books Champs. Team members read a set of eight books

and competed to be

the first to answer

questions about them

and the best part is

they all seemed to

have fun. This year

all of the teams

p r ov ed to b e

particularly well-

prepared. There were

many close, nail-

b i t i n g b a t t l e s ;

however, only one

team prevailed as the

championship team.

For the third year

in a row, the winner

of the book battle

was the Daniel

Pierce Library Team

from Grahamsville, which steamrolled to the top and will reign as the 2016 Champions.

Congratulations to the Team, Coach Matt Haynes and library staff member Anita Jones.

The powerhouse Cornwall Public Library Team expertly managed to work its way into

second place. Congratulations Cornwall Team, Coach Lisa SinClair and staff member Liz

Fisher.

The team from the New City Free Library came back from an early loss and placed third

this time around. Congratulations to Team New City and Coach Mary Phillips.

A diagram showing how all the teams fared is posted to the RCLS website.

We were especially pleased to have Assemblyman James Skoufis (99th District) present at

the program. Assemblyman Skoufis gave a brief greeting and praised all the participants for

their endeavors in keeping literature and learning alive and healthy. He also gave a special

shout out to the four teams from his district (Albert Wisner, Cornwall, Moffat, and Rose

Memorial).

Special thanks to the SUNY Orange English Department for cosponsoring the event again

this year and thanks to all who participated volunteers, officials, coaches, planners,

parents, families, and most of all the team members. We look forward to seeing them all

again next year.

Champions Daniel Pierce Library Team from Grahamsville
