Basketball NOV 5th: The first game after the half term is always a difficult one, but after finishing the last half term with a win, the team felt strong. Going to face off with the unknown team of Haringey Sixth Form, Bsix went in with a little more than half a squad. The facilities were cold and unwelcoming, a clear sign of things to come.

The game started with both sides mirroring abilities. The first quarter ended with an 8 point lead to Haringey. At this point Bsix still looked set to make a comeback, but unvoiced to the two coaches, was that the early point difference had crushed the team unity and game focus. The next three quarters of the game were haphazard with our usual top scorer Aliunho Fernandez scoring but one three pointer. The tables had turned for the once non scoring Hassan Mallin was man of the match as he was the teams top scorer, assists and rebounder. John Canceran played the best point guard position to date, he was strong on the ball and controlled the pace of the game. Usual aggressive Mo Hamlat moved well,

positioned himself expertly, but was not re-ceiving the team awareness required to har-ness passing and shooting potential that he was creating.

The team overall were disappointed with their performance as there was no one else to blame for their sorrowful defeat other than themselves. Being that the only reason for such a loss was a lack of team bond, they need to return to top form for their next face

off—Havering.

NOV 12th: Bsix went into their first football match without a strong team bond. against the league leaders who’d

played 3 games and won all, Bsix was not expecting an easy game. 13 players out of 21 available, our resources where

stretched before a ball had been kicked and not having any recognised defenders didn’t make for an easy game.

With Walham Forest starting strongly it was difficult for Bsix to get going, after 10 minutes it should have been 1-0 to

the hosts, with the referee giving them a penalty. David

Fakeye, dived right to deny the goal. Waltham forest took the

lead after 35 minutes, Bsix struggled to get to grips with

Waltham Forest’s physical strength. Lucio Vare received the

ball at the edge of the box and the rest was magic, beating 4

players before he shot past the keepers left. Half time, 1-1.

Bsix started the second half confidently with a few

chances to take the lead, but were unable to finish. Captain

Huseyin forced a great save with a left foot half volley from

outside the box - in football if you don’t take your chances the

opposition usually gets one and finishes. Truth be told on this

occasion, one more for Waltham Forest. With Bsix losing and drained, Lucio popped up on the score sheet again after a

defensive error.

The scores now 2-2, both teams trying to win, the game was anyone’s. Bsix players’ fitness had a negative affect

causing people to drop like flies due to injury, so the host took the lead for the third time when Remy was getting back to

defend decided to cross the ball the to the host striker for him to cut in and score. 3-2 it wasn’t until the last minute when

Remy received the ball on the left and tried to make up for his earlier error put in a great cross with his left foot and with

the goal at his mercy Amin was unable to make the contact he wanted and went just wide.

So with the game finishing 3-2 Bsix can hold their heads up high, the future looks bright.

Football B Team 19th Nov: This was an exciting tournament against a range of colleges from east London and Essex. We had the same squad from

the Festival of Sport with an additional player, which meant the team were able to get short, sharp relief. Our champion goal keeper Gurpreet Singh stepped

up again, with super sharp defender Ainsley Ogilvie ready to defend the pride of Bsix. The first game against Seevic ended with a 2-1 win to Bsix with Aaron

and Joel scoring one a piece. This was just the warm up. Next was Hackney,

our sister college, they showed no mercy, beating us 3-2, this time goals

came from Nicky and Kalilu. The team knew they had to fight for the rest of

the day.

The next three games told another story, Bsix came back out of the

changing room with ferocity and hunger. They were not going to be satisfied

without a fresh, warm kill on the cold November morning. The games went

the following way, against Barking and Dagenham 3-1 (Aaron 2 and Nicky 1),

against NewVic 8-0 (Aaron 3, Nicky 2, Kalilu 2 and Joel 1) and then Chelmsford

4-1 (Nicky 2 and Aaron 2). The final game was not to be so lucrative, well not

for Bsix. Beaten by the tournament champs, South Essex, Bsix suffered a 4-3

defeat, to which the goal keeper was heart broken, even after having a

superb work rate that no team mate could complain about, nevertheless the

team consoled and supported him in this testing time. The highlight of the

day was the own goal committed by the keeper, after being unaware of the game start and receiving a back pass form Nicky, He decided at that moment it

would be a wise idea to kick the ball into his own goal… Despite conceding that early goal, it had lightened the mood of the whole team and they went on to

win against Chelmsford College. Overall a fantastic day and achievement for Bsix. Top Goal scorer Aaron Curtis—8 goals for the tournament.

Cricket 12th Nov: After a

rocky start to the year, Bsix

cricket team finally pulled

together for the East London

Indoor cricket tournament. 10

overs and 6 players, Bsix had to

enter strong and unified. This

was difficult after having only 1

training session prior, however

they were professional and seasoned athletes. Playing NewVic, there was some rivalries that had to be settled. The fast bowls and spins were flying, with

excellent bowling from Hussein, Mukhtiar and Hasib, both Hasib and Hussein managed to get two NewVic wickets on their first bowl. This left a bitter taste in

the mouths of the NewVic players. The Bsix team did well to field, catching many balls and stopping unnecessary runs. The captain, Mukhtiar had entered

the tournament highly strung and it took for the rest of the team to calm him down and remain focused, once reached he was able to bowl some fast and

true balls. Once Bsix changed to batting, the lack of training shone through, with NewVic returning the favour of getting two of our guys out as soon as they’d

stepped up. Nevertheless by the end, there was only a 9 run difference between the two teams, with the win going to NewVic.

Basketball—Two Games, Same Team

NOV 19th and 26th: This was to be a double match up against Havering Sixth Form college in both the knockout league and cup games. Bsix had

never faced Havering in previous years, so this was to be unknown territories. We wins for 2 out of 5 games, the team felt comfortable and confident as

they knew at this stage there was no turning back. The 19th brought fresh legs, minds and thoughts of the opposition for both teams, however, by the third

round there was ultra aggression and competitiveness being displayed by both sides. No.5 of Havering continuously barged past the defence of Bsix, testing

the players. There was sweat and bloodshed for the win as Bsix fought off the pressure, returning each attack on the home defence with an equally

powerful offensive play. The scores were as close as they possibly could be. By the fourth it was neck and neck with 39 a piece. It was anyone's game to play

for, with the pressure on Havering began to fowl excessively and they had a number of their players fowled out. Once this had happened, their team fowls

were as such that every offence caused a free throw to Bsix. The final score after a ferocious final quarter ended with very few additional points, but a clear

win for the home team Bsix. 48—41.

One week later, Bsix face the same team, this time everyone is

prepared for the arsenal that may come. There no.5 had a vendetta

against our no.10 Aliunho Fernandez, small and nimble versus large and

powerful. Havering had turned up with 6 players whilst Bsix had a full

squad. The game started with equal standing, strong defence and strong

offense, which should not have been the case as Bsix-the home team –

had the number advantage, but they were not capitalising. Taking a 8

point lead in the first quarter there was an air of arrogance with Bsix.

This was was to be erased swiftly as the second half was dominated by

Havering, launching into a 14 point lead. There was some rivalry between

No.5 and John Canceran, Bsix point guard. There was screaming and

words exchanged with each broken defence and score made. The points

began flowing upwards for both teams, with almost all player on Bsix

scoring. There was particular hunger for points from Dainius, Mo Ali, Mo Hamlat and Aliunho.

Defence for Bsix was held strong by Jeff Nadi, Akol Tiit and Hassan Mallin. Utilising their speed and aggression to snatch rebounds and intercept

passes. Coach Hitchman was being ruthless with his control of the team, small mistakes resulted in being benched as every mistake was creating scoring

opportunity for Havering which they had rarely wasted. The fourth

quarter arrives and Bsix finally turn up the heat after trailing for 14

points for the final two and half quarters. With half of the final

quarter remaining, the intensity of the game sky rocketed to epic

proportions and thus Bsix took a 3 point lead with 1 minute to go.

63-60 to Bsix. The last 10 seconds and they are holding off Havering.

Final 3 seconds, havering shoot, miss and hit the rim. The ball begins

to bounce towards the side line, Aliuno runs towards it (at this

moment where he who wants it most wins) but is beaten to the ball

by a Havering player who swings it out of the three point area to his

team mate who takes a shot to hit a three. This ties the game, but in

the rules of basketball there must be a winner.

5 minutes extra time, nothing to lose and everything to gain,

both teams battle, points for points, on this day it seemed Havering

were hungrier for victory as their will power seemed to take their

endurance, speed and power beyond that which Bsix were currently

capable of. The final whistle and Havering take the victory with a final

score of 75-69.

Volleyball : Colchester Sixth form College– The grudge match

20th Nov: Having beaten Ipswich in the last round Bsix was once again the away team, this time all the way in Colchester. Colchester is the

horrendous (and clearly formidable) team that knocked Bsix out of the cup last year so the squad came into this game with something to prove. Bsix started

very well with the debut of Mr Alie Sheriff and Miss Kamila Zgadzaj starting their first game for Bsix. The first set went to Bsix with a close but assumingly

comfortable score of 25-20 with Klaudia Kakolewska slamming down some serious shots, 2nd set and Colchester with the help of their regional players won 25

-17, slaughtering the Bsix side. Bring the set wins to neck and neck with a score of 1-1. With a change of pace from the opposition, this became a big turning

point with Bsix leading in this set but unable to get over the finish line, Colchester managed to steal the set 25-23 to take a 2-1 lead. This was a crushing

blow to the veteran volleyball players as they were so close to victory and had a vendetta against this team. But as Bsix usually do, Bsix started the fourth set

with some intent, Paulina Milewska serves were impeccable, launching Bsix into a whopping 12-0 lead and managed to get over the finish line 25-18 to

take the sets to 2-2 and into a decider. The match became a deep source of contention, with but one set determining the winner and time running out.

In the decider it’s up to 15 instead of 25 so it could swing either way, however Bsix were the unlucky loser and lost the 5th and deciding set 15-9 which

means Colchester again dashed the dreams and expectations of the cup hopefuls, progressing on whilst Bsix saunter off once more from the dark and

remorseless realm that is Colchester Sixth Form College. Bsix played very well and deserved to win the game but, sometimes that isn’t the way things play

out. Bsix should hold their heads up high because they played marvellously. Player of the match Klaudia Kakolewska

BETTER—For the Girls Launch

26th Nov: It was an early Wednesday morning, with moaning and complaining aplenty from the The ladies of Bsix who were rushing to the rescue of

BETTER (formerly GLL) to assist in their launch for their new sport England initiative: For the Girls. The event was held at the Copper Box, Olympic Park in

Stratford. This new initiative is about getting females back into physical activity ranging from basketball to swimming, netball to volleyball and fitness classes to

gym. Based in and around the London region Hackney’s link is located at Kings Hall Leisure Centre/Hackney Baths. This one off launch event which was a promo

photo and video shoot had seen Olympic medallist Jade Johnson putting some of the ladies through their paces in a spin class and ab session. The Bsix team

had the pleasure of working with Josie Gibson on an aerobics fitness class. Josie had won big brother 2010 and at the time weighed in at 16st 8lbs and worked

solidly for a year to bring that weight down to 10st 2lbs. Josie has now qualified as a personal trainer and nutritionist and was there to answer any questions

people may have had as well as talk of her own experience and the journey she took. The Bsix Ladies had their knees quivering and hearts racing as they

worked out for the camera to some

pumping beats. It was a workout well

needed as the hosts had provided a

plethora of cakes, warm pastries,

warm muffins and a (tiny) side order

of fruits. You can imagine what eve-

ryone's faces were stuffed with prior

to working out. This was against the

expert advice of their coach and fit-

ness instructor which resulted in bel-

ly aches and lethargy all around. Be-

ing one group of three colleges/

schools invited to take part, it was a

privilege for Bsix to be a part of this

launch, with Calmeleta Campbell and

Kamila Zgadzaj having a great opportunity to be interviewed and give their opinions on sport and exercise for young women.
