Open Juried Art Show, 2017!

Well, it’s time to start thinking about what you will enter in the show next year, now that this year’s show is over.

We will be in the museum again next year for the show, so thanks to the Harbor History Museum for once again being

our host venue! We already have the dates for you to start planning. Reception and opening will be September 8th,

2017, and the show will close October 22nd, 2017. Tentative date for all entries to OnLineJuriedShows is Wednesday,

July 5th 2017. Tentative shipped art to arrive date is September 1st, 2017. We are still waiting on final arrangements

with the Harbor History Museum for complete details.

It’s also time to think about volunteering for different tasks to help with the show. I will have a list at the meeting of posi-

tions we will need help with. We would love it if you would pick something you would like to do and can help with. I plan

on an initial meeting in January with all the volunteers who have already signed up to help, and any others who feel they

can help. I am going to try to sign up for the Timberland Bank room after the board meeting. If you work, or can’t make

that date or time, I’m sure we can make other arrangements as needed. I’d like to thank all of you in advance for volun-

teering and all your hard work to accomplish this wonderful art show. This years show has been one of the best ever,

even though we had such a late start. With the early start this year, I’m sure it will be even better!

The associated Workshop for this year’s Open Show will be held at Frances Buckmaster’s Studio in Puyallup. It will be

a figure drawing workshop this year by popular request. More information to follow in the next couple of months. Start

planning to attend next fall.

October 2016 Board minutes:

In attendance: Charli Meacham, Barb Ruble, Stevie Cardinal, Carlene Salazar, Greg Trathen, Randy Robbins, Jeni Woock, Anne Knapp, Charlee Glock-Jackson, Feather Hilger & Myrna Binion

Meeting called to order by President Charli Meacham at 10:05

Old Business:

Treasurer’s Report – Randy Robbins – PAL now has $1,259 in Key Bank checking, $126,412 in Key Bank Money Market, $1,201 in Timberland checking and $56,707 in Timberland Money Market for a total of $185,580.00.

Anne Knapp visited the Board with a report from the Arts Alliance. The Feasibility Study has been completed as to the possibility of an Arts/Civic building in the Gig Harbor area which could be a meeting, workshop and display space for Peninsula Art League in the future. The study came back with a positive outlook for building an even larger space than was previously planned. The building could house arts and music groups and also be used for functions such as weddings and other large events in our area. The study found the project would be viable and would bring income to the surrounding community. There was general discussion regarding the participation PAL could have in this process and how we might use the space. There will be an Arts Alliance meeting Nov 6, 2016. Myrna Binion will attend.

Randy Robbins – Randy spoke about investment possibilities for PAL, keeping in mind our main responsibility is the safeguard-ing of those funds. We do have a substantial amount of money in savings but interest rates have been so low that monetary growth has been slow. Charli reminded the board that a motion has already been made and passed by the board that we will move money into an investment at Wells Fargo Bank. The question is when to move the money into an investment account so as to avoid paying a yearly fee from October to the end of December 2016. There was discussion about putting money into a 1 year or 2 year cd.

*After discussion, Carlene Salazar moved that we wait until January 2017 before moving money to Wells Fargo. Feather Hilger se-conded the motion and it was passed by the board.

There was further discussion of how much money to invest and how to split the amounts and length of investment. This was tabled until January when more information regarding interest rates will be available.

Jeni Woock – Art Festival – Online Juried Shows will begin posting our information on December 1, 2016 for the 2017 Art Festival. There will be a onetime meeting to clarify and set parameters for participants as to rules and expectations. Charlee Glock-Jackson said she would sit in on that committee. The Festival Committee will begin meeting on the 1st Thursday in February.

There was discussion of the membership show location and food and music location during next year’s festival. More discussion will take place regarding these plans. Also, All Star Guitar students will participate on Sunday during our next festival which will save us money and bring in their parents and friends to our event. We need another person to assist with “sound” during next year’s festival.

Newsletter- Anne Knapp has volunteered to take over the Palette Newsletter in January, 2017. There was discussion about the best computer program to use for the ongoing newsletter – it was agreed to stay with Microsoft Publisher.

*Carlene Salazar made a motion that PAL set aside up to $400 for the purchase of a Microsoft Program including Publisher for PAL to be used by Anne Knapp. The motion was seconded by Greg Trathen. The motion was passed by the board.

New Business:

Election- There was discussion regarding the best way to vote at the meeting next Tuesday. It was decided to offer the slate of offic-ers on a printed ballot with blanks left for write in candidates if needed. If there are no write in names, there will be a line at the bottom of the ballot stating “I accept the slate as written”. The ballots should be counted during the break and announced at the meeting.

Greeters- Stevie Cardinal and Feather Hilger will be official Greeters and will help out with membership in Cece Anderson’s absence. If anyone pays membership, checks can go to Randy Robbins and the information passed along to Cece.

Open Show- Next year’s date has not been chosen as Carlene is waiting for information from the museum. We have a juror and plans for a workshop at Frances Buckmaster’s studio in Puyallup are ongoing. We will plan another Docent Event next year chaired by Myrna Binion and Anne Knapp. Jennifer Evenhaus was suggested as a juror/instructor for 2018.

Plein Air Show and HHM Art and Artifacts Show – Anne Knapp plans to be at Mallard’s Landing at 10:00 a.m. on Nov 1 to check out paintings from the Plein Air Show and hopes many of the paintings will be delivered to the GH History Museum for the Arts and Artifacts show.

Members Fall Show- Drop off is Oct 24th , 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Kimball Gallery. Sherry Bales is juror and the reception will be Oct 30 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Pick up art November 28, 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

There was discussion of Urban Sketchers participation in PAL Shows. It was decided the artists must be PAL Members, pass screen-ing in a mixed media or drawing category and only original framed art will be accepted. The meeting was adjourned at 11:50.
