Jaque M. and Kiyoshi Tomono enjoying
the Senior Games at Rosewood
Community Center.
Life is full of obstacles
that we run into everyday.
Sometimes we are forced to
face many trails and
tribulations that we may not
want to face. Through all of the
ups and downs it is important
to remain thankful for the
things that we do have in life.
From our children and
grandchildren to our spouses
and friends all around us, there
are many reasons to be thankful
on this earth. It is very easy to
fall into a slump and dwell on
the problems and issues that are
currently happening. Always
know that there are people
around you that love you.
This month is all about
being thankful. For me, I am
truly thankful for each and
everyone of you. All of you
bring your own unique
personalities to this

community which never leaves a
dull moment. Everyone is spunky
in their own way and full of
energy. I am forever grateful for
your positive attitudes towards
others as well as your
management team.
As we show our thanks for
November, we ask our residents
and their family members to
come in and add to our “Thankful
Wall”. The purpose of this wall is
to take the time to stop, reflect,
and be grateful for what we have
in life. We hope that everyone has
a wonderful November and a
peaceful Thanksgiving filled with
love and gratuity.

This months resident of the
month is Josephine Berna
Josephine Berna is a beautiful resident here at Brookside Senior Apartments. Josephine was born in Noster, Missouri on August 10th, 1919. As a young child, she moved to Chilhowee with her family. Josephine’s mother was named Nellie Sprinkle and her father was named George McGinnis. George McGinnis worked on an apple farm as a farmer. Nellie Sprinkle McGinnis was a home maker. Both of Josephine’s parents shared 13 children and she was the 7th
girl.
After a great childhood, Josephine graduated from high school in 1939. Where she received her first job as a waitress for 5 years. Josephine fell in love with Claude Harris. They both share 2 beautiful daughters, Nancy Harris and Janet Harris. Both of their children attended Foothill High School here in Bakersfield. During their oldest daughter’s senior year in high school, Jo’s husband passed away. After a while of grieving, Josephine met Bill Berna and re married. Bill was a local postal worker. The two love birds lived on the north east part of Bakersfield, where they enjoyed their wonderful children and grandchildren. Bill past away in 2007, and Josephine moved to Brookside Senior Apartments shortly after. Josephine says she loves being here at Brookside. Her favorite part about being at Brookside Senior is the people and the friendships she has made thus
far.
This is Josephine’s 8th year at Brookside Senior Apartments and we are enjoying every second with you. You help bring the joy of light to our community with your contagious smile. You are always welcoming of others and we
appreciate your residency at Brookside.
Day Light Saving is coming up and
it’s time to set your clock back one
hour. The time change will happen
early Sunday morning at 2am. We
gain one more hour of sleep, woo-hoo!
When it comes to Brookside Senior
Apartments we are known for our
mature landscaping and scenic views. It
is important to maintain our property's
cleanliness. Want to help out? One of
the best ways that you residents can
assist is keeping your porch and patio
area free of clutter and debris.
Here is a list that may help:
Only having patio furniture and
potted plants outside.
Avoid leaving cleaning tools,
recyclables, and trash outside.
Excessive items are an eye sore.
Tools and personal belongings
should be kept in storage
containers. These containers should
not be any taller than the patio
enclosures.
For grocery shopping trips, make sure
to arrive to the Clubhouse on time.
Everyone signed up should be ready to
go at 9:00am.
For Tuesday medicals please schedule
appointments from 2pm-4pm. Thursday
morning appointments should be
scheduled from 915am-12pm.

The first Thanksgiving was held in the autumn of 1621 and included 50
Pilgrims and 90 Wampanoag Indians and lasted three days. Many historians
believe that only five women were present at that first Thanksgiving, as many
women settlers didn't survive that difficult first year in the U.S.
Thanksgiving didn't become a national holiday until over 200 years later! Sarah Josepha Hale, the woman who actually wrote the classic song “Mary
Had a Little Lamb,” convinced President Lincoln in 1863 to make
Thanksgiving a national holiday, after writing letters for 17 years
campaigning for this to happen.
No turkey on the menu at the first Thanksgiving: Historians say that no
turkey was served at the first Thanksgiving! What was on the menu? Deer or
venison, ducks, geese, oysters, lobster, eel and fish. They probably ate
pumpkins, but no pumpkin pies. They also didn't eat mashed potatoes or cran-
berry relish, but they probably ate cranberries. And no, Turduckens (a turkey
stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken) were nowhere to be found during
that first Thanksgiving.
No forks at the first Thanksgiving! The first Thanksgiving was eaten with
spoons and knives — but no forks! That's right, forks weren't even introduced
to the Pilgrims until 10 years later and weren't a popular utensil until the 18th
century.
Thanksgiving is the reason for TV dinners! In 1953, Swanson had so much
extra turkey (260 tons) that a salesman told them they should package it onto
aluminum trays with other sides like sweet potatoes — and the first TV dinner
was born!
Thanksgiving was almost a fast — not a feast! The early settlers gave
thanks by praying and abstaining from food, which is what they planned on
doing to celebrate their first harvest, that is, until the Wampanoag Indians
joined them and (lucky for us!) turned their fast into a three-day feast!
Why is Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November? President Abe
Lincoln said Thanksgiving would be the fourth Thursday in November, but in
1939 President Roosevelt moved it up a week hoping it would help the shop-
ping season during the Depression era. It never caught on and it was changed
back two years later.
