SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KINGSOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KINGSOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KINGSOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING November 21, 201November 21, 201November 21, 201November 21, 201

    FROMOURPASTOR

In 1925 Pope Pius XI, who reigned between 1922 and1939, wrote an encyclical letter, Quas Primas, establishingthe Feast of Christ the King, which we will celebrate thisweekend at the conclusion of the liturgical year. HisPapacy missed the two great World Wars of the twentieth

century but it was hardly a time of peace. Catholic and Orthodox Christianswere being put to death by Stalin in the Soviet Union; in Spain and MexicoChurch property was confiscated and clergy and religious were killed orexpelled; in the Popes own backyard Mussolini had taken over Italy andsoon Germany would be dominated by Hitler, a second Fascist dictator. TheChurch was under attack and the purpose of establishing this feast was toremind people that as long as individuals and states refused to submit to therule of our Savior, there would be no really hopeful prospect of a lastingpeace among nations. Pius XIs motto was Christs peace in Christskingdom - in other words, unless we realize that the world belongs to Godand try to obey Christs laws, war is likely to return (as it did within a fewmonths of his death).

In the encyclical Pius said: It was surely right, then, in view of the commonteaching of the sacred books (of the Bible), that the Catholic Church, whichis the kingdom of Christ on earth, destined to be spread among all men andall nations, should with every token of veneration salute her Author andFounder in her annual liturgy as King and Lord, and as King of Kings. AsCatholics we honor Christ the King each year, but the rule of Christ actuallyembraces all people, as Pope Leo XIII had already pointed out: His empireincludes not only Catholic nations, not only baptized persons who, though ofright belonging to the Church, have been led astray by error, or have beencut off from her by schism, but also all those who are outside the Christianfaith; so that truly the whole of mankind is subject to the power of JesusChrist.

It is a happy coincidence that Thanksgiving comes so close to the feast ofChrist the King because both occasions give recognition to the sovereignty ofGod in our lives. When people try to exclude God from public life by a falseinterpretation of the separation of Church and State, they actuallyundermine the authority of our rulers. As Pius said If, therefore, the rulersof nations wish to preserve their authority, to promote and increase theprosperity of their countries, they will not neglect the public duty ofreverence and obedience to the rule of Christ. If, on the other hand, ournational and State leaders forget the connection between Gods law andhuman law, between what is moral and what is legal, their authority nolonger has a secure and solid foundation. What Pope Pius said in 1925 stillapplies to those elected to serve: they should take account of thecommandments of God and of Christian principles, both in making laws andin administering justice, and also in providing for the young a sound moraleducation.

Let us pray for our country and for the world this Sunday and ask God tobring them back to Christian values. In the words of Pope Pius XI: Whenonce men recognize, both in private and in public life, that Christ is King, society will at last receive the great blessings of real liberty, well-ordereddiscipline, peace and harmony.
