Our Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday 12th October with reports tabled from
the Chair of the Committee of Manager and the Facility Manager. When reading a
report for the previous year we realise just how much has been done to not only sustain
the facility and care provided but we see the improvements and changes that have been
achieved by committed staff and volunteers. A special thank you to those who attended
and willingly stood to their feet to speak of the impressive care provided by Nanyima
staff and loyal band of volunteers. The AGM is also the time for election of new and
re-election of already standing COM members. We were pleased to see and here of the
acceptance of new members. All will be needed as we move into next year and progress
with the extension of our proposed 20 beds. Thank you to the catering team who
presented the AGM with a delicious morning tea.
One of the changes required by government this year is the reporting of 3 Quality
Indicators. After 3 months of collecting the information in relation to Physical
Restraint, Pressure Injury and Unplanned weight loss we were please to complete the
on-line data with favourable results. Great work by clinical staff. This process is
required every 3 months so we will soon begin the next round.
Recruitment in any business is an ongoing task for the HR manager and aged care is no
exception when it comes to employing staff who have a heart for caring the elderly. We
are pleased to welcome another RN to our team which will replace an RN who has
chosen to move into acute care. There is still room for more RN’s and we await each day for further resumes to come across the desk. With an international shortage of
Registered Nurses and only a handful of them who want to work in aged care, we remain
optimistic some will come our way and bring a keen interest in aged care.
The interim report from the Aged Care Royal Commission is due out at the end of
October and we are keen to view their recommendations in regard to staffing ratios.
Currently we are sitting above the average for clinical care hours which enable us to
provide care at a high standard. We are currently reviewing the clinical roster to ensure
we can provide the residents with as much choice as possible. They all have different
needs and its our aim to meet those individual needs in a residential setting.
Hope you all have a fun day for Melbourne Cup and then start to
enjoy the Christmas cheer.

They say using our senses is important e.g. sight, taste, touch and smell well in October we had sensory
overload starting with our Annual Flower Show, which was held on Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th.
Wednesday afternoon Jen and myself ( Bite Me ) started setting up the multipurpose room and courtyard,
with the permission of some residents we flogged a number of plants out of their gardens. Thanks to Sylvia
Thorneycroft, Olive Coles and Rod Fannon. When our job was done the four musketeer ( Merv, Nev, Peter
and Tony ) from the Pioneer River Orchid & Plant Association arrived with a mind blowing arrange of plants
and orchids. They were like busy little bees setting up the display. On both days we had a cake and craft
stall and morning tea was provided for a gold coin donation. Thank you to our loyal volunteers for manning the
stall and serving the morning tea. Rob Rolls joined us on the Friday and had everyone singing and dancing. A
group from Sarina Respite also joined in the festivities and is always happy to get an invite from us. It was
great to see our residents, family, friends, staff and community members mingling and just having a great
time. Our cake and craft staff made $717.00 . One of my most used words are THANK YOU and again I
would like to THANK absolutely everyone who made these two days such a great success.
On Wednesday the 16th we headed off to Bunnings in Paget for morning tea and to spend time in the
nursery, you would think our residents would have had enough of plants and flowers Oh! No. They were as
keen as mustard, morning tea was demolished and off they went heads down and bums up in the nursery. It
was a good feeling when I saw haw excited some of the residents got when they smelt or saw an unusual
flower or plant. With exhausted volunteers and a bus load of plants we headed back home. We were a little
bit late for lunch but no one was too worried.
Friday the 25th was Marian Ladies Bowls Club Annual Fashion Parade and Cent Sale. Our taste buds were
tantalized with a delicious morning tea which was waiting for us when we arrived. Later the colours and design
of the cloths took our eye in the fashion parade, the cloths were provided by Noni B. Then we had to listen
carefully when they started calling out the numbers for the cent sale. We did not win a great number of
prizes, but the residents enjoyed the outing.
Vibeke one of our regular volunteers holds a craft and social gathering on Saturday mornings. Saturday the
26th Vibeke and the ladies made some eco scarves. The scarves were laid out and different textures were
place on them eg leaves, flowers and twigs after being dipped into a dye. The finished product was just
beautiful, everyone was very proud of themselves.
Hubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble a covert of witches flew in on their broom sticks for a morning of cooking.
The caldron was fired up and stirred. There was plenty of cackling going on while yucky mud chocolate
crackles were made with eyes, fingers and mouths displayed on them. Then came blood red pikelets with
worms melting in them, owls popped up made out of cursed cake and melted bat wings. There were plenty
more mouth watering treats made as well. Residents sat around taste testing the discussing, revolting
treats, guess what? they just all disappeared. When the witches had finished cooking they muttered a
couple of spells, hopped on their brooms sticks and flew away, again cackling.
On Friday the 31st we held our Halloween Bingo a couple of witches decided to return because they had such
a good time stirring the caldron yesterday. They brought along some edible body parts for everyone to enjoy
while playing bingo. There were plenty of comments about the witches dress sense. Never the less the
witches thought they looked absolutely ravishing.
We are gearing up for our Melbourne Cup Day Celebrations, sweeps will be drawn on Monday the 4th.
Everyone is excited and looking forward to Tuesday. Residents are
choosing their outfits and what head attire they are going to wear to
make up their ensemble. Good luck.
Hope you have a winner.
Cheers!

BENEFITS OF PET THERAPY
Improved Mood
Multiple studies have cited benefits such as
Improved mood and more social interaction —
notable benefits since people with dementia and
some within residential care are at risk for
developing depression, which can further
compromise their functioning and quality of life.
One such study evaluated animal assisted therapy at an adult day care centre for older
adults with dementia. The results indicated that involving the people in activities with dogs
decreased their feelings of anxiety and sadness and increased physical activity and
positive emotions.
Calming Effect In a study published in 2008, psychologists observed a calming effect following pet therapy
in a small sample of nursing home residents. Other studies have shown that
animal-assisted therapy yields significantly lower blood pressure levels.
Improved Nutrition
One study placed aquariums in a facility and found that residents’ intake and weight
increased. This decreased the need for nutritional supplements, which lowered costs for
the facility.
Research has also revealed many benefits to pet therapy; some of which may include:
Decreased blood pressure and stress
Improved communication and reminiscence
Many people who are normally unresponsive to other therapies may ‘brighten up’ and
‘chat’ with a pet
Pets may motivate and encourage the elderly to stay healthy and exercise, giving them a
feeling of being needed
Motor skills may improve with the assistance of an animal trained for pet therapy.
At Nanyima we have the beautiful Piccolo for the residents to LOVE.
Until next time, keep safe.
