Live Jazz, Melbourne Cup Day, BassLive Jazz, Melbourne Cup Day, BassLive Jazz, Melbourne Cup Day, BassLive Jazz, Melbourne Cup Day, Bass The Bass Valley Community Group is pleased to announce that a live jazz band performance will be held at the Bass Hall, Bass School Road, Bass on Tuesday, 5 November commencing at 2pm. We have been fortunate to secure the services of one of Melbourne’s most promising and unusual multi instrumentalist jazz bands “Sweet Ade” led by the very talented multi recorder player Marion Lustig. The other players in the band (L-R) are Chris Farley, Richard Opat, Janet Arndt, Joe Kenyon, Lisette Payet and Peter Mason. Between them, they play recorders, piano, banjo, ukeleles, reeds, washboard, piano accordeon and sousaphone, as well as vocals. Sweet Ade is a recorder led jazz and ragtime band, “trad” but not traditional, inspired by the recorder playing of the late, great Australian multi instrumentalist Ade Monsborough who is considered by many to be the Father of Australian Jazz. Sweet Ade have delighted audiences wherever they have played since their first performance as a group in February 2012.

Live Jazz On Cup Day, the Bass Hall Live Jazz On Cup Day, the Bass Hall Live Jazz On Cup Day, the Bass Hall Live Jazz On Cup Day, the Bass Hall
Something fun on Melbourne Cup Day this year will be the Jazz Day in the Bass Hall for the non-racing diehards looking for a special day out. Sweet Ade’s jazz band performance will commence at 2pm. They are one of the most exciting jazz bands on the Victorian jazz scene at the moment and they have already delighted many local jazz fans who saw them play at the Phillip Island Jazz Club in May. The day will get underway with a BYO BBQ / Picnic in the George Bass Park, commencing at 11:30am. This will be a great family day out and children are welcome. Kids are encouraged to bring along their teddy bears for a “Teddy Bear’s Picnic” in the park and a prize will be awarded for the best dressed teddy. Actually, one of Sweet Ade’s most outstanding performances is their version of the Ade Monsborough recorder classic ‘The Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ which they will play for us. The Bass Op Shop will be open on Cup Day especially for the occasion too. Perhaps the kids can buy a teddy bear from the Op Shop for the picnic. During the jazz performance afternoon tea, coffee and cake will be available to purchase at intervals. The Melbourne Cup will be broadcasted. For the picnic there will be sausages, hamburgers and soft drinks available to purchase for those not wishing to bring their own. There will also be a raffle and a lucky door prize to be won during the day. Tickets are on sale now. Cost: $12.50 per person. Strictly limited seats. Only 100 tickets available. Don’t miss out - book now. Call Roger Clark 0403 025 429 (credit card payment accepted over the phone) or email [email protected] with details to reserve your tickets.
A Grantville Mural A Grantville Mural A Grantville Mural A Grantville Mural By Tim Ealey There is a small group of painters in the U3A Landscape and Bush Painting Group who meet with Tim Ealey every Tuesday at 2pm at the Grantville Transaction Centre. They have not, so far, ventured into the bush. This is maybe because it is too hot in summer, rains in winter and there are no tea making facilities among the trees. Also, some of us are a bit creaky. Amazingly some very fine works have been produced. This, probably, was why Marie, an occasional visitor to the group, asked about repairing a faded painting of a huge Gumtree on her garage wall. The group had a look at the problem and decided to do over the whole of the garage wall. Lee was asked to fix the tree as she is, by far, a consummate painter of trees. Tim was forced to take up a brush although he has avoided painting for 15 years (thus dispelling the myth that maybe he could not paint). Carol covered some big spaces and went wild with flowers. Marie got out of hand with some clouds which she later painted over. Wild ideas concerning lily ponds and more trees were abandoned. Lee cleverly popped some far distant trees in the background and gave the thing perspective and that was it, everyone probably learned a lot and certainly enjoyed Marie’s tea and buns. Anyone interested in a couple of hours of relaxed daubing and chatting, or who would like me to teach them the tricks I learned about painting landscapes in another life should come along. All enquiries about joining this group, please call Sheila Moore, from the U3A on 5678 8570.

Self Sufficiency Self Sufficiency Self Sufficiency Self Sufficiency It’s not often we would say Happy Birthday to a magazine but this month is a special occasion, with one of Australia’s great self sufficiency magazines, Grass Roots, celebrating its 40th birthday, which is an outstanding achievement for any publication. The 40th Anniversary Edition is on sale now at newsagents and has all the usual features plus many reflections of its past 40 years of publication. One thing I noticed on page 79 was that during a recent clean-up they found several boxes of an iconic manual for GR living on the cheap, Live Better for Less, first published in 1991, which are now available at $7 posted. To get your copy email [email protected] or call 03 5792 4000. As part of a planned launch next month of a new segment Self Sufficiency we have two copies of this to give away to the first two readers who send us their favourite self sufficiency ideas, maybe even a photo of your backyard vegetable garden, just email [email protected]
Happy Birthday Grass Roots. For those of you who haven’t seen a copy, get one now, you’ll love it.

The most important thing for the Bass Valley News, from my point of view, is reader participation, your stories, etc. So why not write in and tell us Why I Live Where I Live, send in a poem you have written or an old photo. MARU KOALA & ANIMAL PARK The Bass Valley News
Indoor Children’s Playroom coming to the Homestead Bistro at Maru.
‘The Dinosaur Room’ is about to be constructed next to our Homestead Bistro at Maru. A few
weeks ago Maru was announced as one of 89 successful applicants to receive a government T-Qual
grant to assist us to build a new indoor children’s playroom. T-Qual grants of up to $100,000 were
available to businesses across Australia to support tourism operators to attract more visitors by
ensuring products and experiences remain fresh, of a high standard and support local economies and
communities. The grants are dollar for dollar matched funding with the business committing to
invest at least equal cash to the government grant provided. A covered alfresco area will be built off
the north side of the existing bistro and the entrance to the large 12x5m indoor playroom will be
from there with the playroom running parallel with our existing front kangaroo paddock fence.
Parents and carers will be able to relax with a coffee or meal and enjoy the views directly into the kangaroo paddock, whilst their children
enjoy the equipment in the playroom beside them. Over $40,000 is being spent on large play
equipment similar to what you see at other restaurant playrooms as shown in the sample picture
and over $140,000 on the project in total. The entire room will be Dinosaur themed and provide
information and displays about our local ’Dinosaur Dreaming’ fossil dig site at Inverloch and
along the Bunerong coast. Maru will work with local palaeontologists to ensure accurate
information about the local fossils and dinosaurs is portrayed. Construction is expected to start by
October and the playroom available for use by the Christmas school holidays, with the final
displays and information completed by March 2014 when an official opening will be held.

CORINELLA MEN’S SHED “MAJOR PROGRESS” The long running saga of getting the Corinella and District Men’s Shed (CDMS), to occupancy has taken a major step forward, with the receipt of a $15,000.00 grant from The Bendigo’s Bank’s Community Trust. The cheque was presented to Corinella Men’s Shed member Kevin Chambers, at the San Remo Community Bank’s tenth birthday celebration. Kevin is pictured here with Trudy Jamieson, Manager of the Bendigo Bank’s Grantville branch. Speaking after the presentation to CDMS President, Steve Hickey, he expressed the group’s gratitude for “this most generous grant which will be used to finalise the installation of sewerage to the Shed”. Parallel plans are to install a generator to power the Shed’s lighting and equipment. “Unfortunately, electricity supply limitations to the adjoining Bass Valley Primary School have necessitated this move”, said Mr Hickey. The hardy CDMS souls now await approval from the Bass Valley Primary School to go ahead with the above projects. When this is given the Shed should finally be able to move towards formal occupancy. Whilst the Corinella Men’s Shed shell was constructed via a State Government grant, Mr Hickey also expressed the group’s sincere gratitude to Bass Coast Shire Council and the Bass Coast Community Foundation, for their internal fit out and equipment grants over the past year. “When the Bendigo Bank funding is added to the above, “local money” grants now exceed $35,000” he said. “Significant additional amounts of local input have also come via the donation of materials and labour e.g. internal plaster, electrical fittings and free installation of the latter”. CDMS looks forward to rewarding the Bass Coast community’s financial faith in the rapidly growing Men’s Shed movement in Gippsland and as always, welcomes new members to the Shed on Corinella Road, Corinella. By Trish Hart, The Gurdies I live at The Gurdies (...the what? and where?…..Yes, I get that all
the time). Well, why would anyone want to live anywhere else? But don’t tell anyone how lovely it is here,
or they’ll all want to come! I sit in my studio gathering my thoughts, looking out towards French Island and
the sparkling sea. Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Rainbow Lorikeets, Rosellas, Kookaburras and King
Parrots are placed on my balcony. From a wildlife artist’s point of view, this is heaven. Of all the places I
have visited, The Gurdies is the one I choose to call home. As part of my work I have enjoyed many years
of travel to far-flung parts of the world. For two months I was “artist in residence” with the Australian
Antarctic Division, voyaging on the M.V Nella Dan to Macquarie Island, Heard Island and the most
southerly Australian Antarctic station, Davis. Surrounded by a fantastic, glittering world, I created
illustrations of the unique Antarctic wildlife for calendars, children’s books and a set of stamps for Australia
Post. Sadly, the Nella Dan sank on her next voyage before reaching the ice again. Afterwards, swept up by the challenge of sea-faring, I
became a crew member aboard two of the largest tall ships in the world, the Russian Kruzenshtern and Sedov. We sailed from the Canary
Islands across the Atlantic to New York via Puerto Rico and Bermuda, and from Fremantle to Cape Town, while I tried to learn the ropes,
climb the masts and weather storms. After falling for a Russian sailor, I was invited to live in Russia, lured by his over optimistic conviction
that I could make a difference, teaching English and Art, in a remote village with no running water (but SO much vodka!). Adventures on the
high seas, exotic locations, stale bread with caviar….been there, done that. Now I watch the sun sink over French Island. In my hand is a
glass of wonderful locally grown grape juice, perfectly blended. I think of my neighbors up and down the street, who are also my friends – a
bunch of lovely “Gurdians” (locals who definitely appreciate the local wines too). I feel settled at The Gurdies and would not want to live
anywhere else. As the glory of the sunset fades I continue my work of photo retouching. It gives me great pleasure, this job - healing old
damaged photos, or removing ex-husbands from family photo’s… It’s a tough life, but someone has to live it. www.trishhart.com

There were loud cheers and many congratulations, when the CWA State Creative Arts Chairman Pat Mawson announced the Bass Group the winner of the Home Industries Group entry at the annual CWA State Creative Arts Exhibition held in Bendigo recently. The entry required five home industries articles to be displayed to the theme of “The Vegie Patch.” Members produced an uncluttered fresh display on yellow gingham consisting of:- Grandchildren’s Beetroot cut in a variety of shapes to encourage children to eat beetroot; Pumpkin Cake; Italian Vegetable Pickle; Sweet Chilli and Ginger Sauce; and Tomato Relish, all in matching clean, clearly labeled containers.
Winning the Home Industries Group entry was not our only success, stated CWA Bass Group President, Carol Young. Grantville member, Lyn Stebbing won the Larking Cup for the finest piece of work in the Exhibition by a member of a Branch with membership of less than 60, with a finely quilted trapunto quilt. The quilt also scored a Green Star award for an item of exceptional workmanship. Jayne Mitchell from Cowes Branch won the Troutbeck award for the best piece of china painting. First prizes were also won by Faye Tuchtan from Coronet Bay Branch for an adult knitted jumper; Hilary Hutchings from Nyora Night Branch for machine made fur fabric bears, Abbi Cininas from Woodleigh Vale Branch for a tiny crochet dog and crochet flowers, Gwenda Swan from Grantville Branch for a pave arrangement and Belinda Smart from Nyora Night Branch for a handwoven scarf.
Bass Group members celebrated their success at the monthly craft class at Grantville last month. Congratulations and well done ladies.

Debra TranterDebra TranterDebra TranterDebra Tranter 2013 Pride of Australia “Environment” Award Nominee, Debra Tranter, is this month’s Personality of the Month. Debra’s nomination for the Award comes as a result of a 20 year commitment to saving man’s best friend from the perils of puppy farming after she discovered the practice was widespread across Australia. She has campaigned solidly ever since to have the practice outlawed and in 2010 founded the people power lobby group Oscar’s Law. Debra has been living at an undisclosed location in the Bass Coast Shire for two years after having moved from the Dandenong Ranges. So great is her commitment to her cause she sold her house and gave up her six figure salary job as a nurse to concentrate on her crusade. She has since however, had to return to work with a nursing agency to assist in paying the bills. She describes herself as divorced and single with two adult daughters, one of whom is going to make her a grandmother next month. Debra lives with her four canine children, Oscar, pictured here with her, along with William, Daisy and 14 year old Lutana.
Debra says, “I started trying to oppose puppy factories in 1993 when I first found out there was an industry behind the pet shop window that was hidden from the public. Not many people realize that we are factory farming our companion animals to supply pet shops in this country. Puppy farmers also sell via internet trading sites. The conditions inside puppy factories are harrowing, 100’s of dogs kept confined for their entire lives and treated as breeding machines simply to supply the pet industry with cute puppies. They are deprived of their basic needs such as companionship, socialization and environmental enrichment, this sort of deprivation inflicts terrible psychological trauma on these dogs. Veterinary issues are common such as ear lice infestations, mammary cancer, prolapsed uterus’ from continually giving birth every 6-8 months, fleas and skin conditions, the list is endless. I recently negotiated the surrender of a number of small dogs from a rural puppy factory, our vet bill so far is just over $13,000. We can fix the veterinary issues but sometimes we cannot fix the psychological damage these dogs have suffered. These dogs never leave their cage and when they are rescued everything is new and frightening such as just being inside a house and all the household noises. It is heartbreaking to witness these dogs so shut down and damaged. Oscar’s Law aims to raise awareness and educate and empower the consumer to make better choices to take the market from these puppy factories. Never buy a puppy from a pet shop or online, choose to adopt and save a life, there are so many great rescue groups and animal shelters full of beautiful animals waiting for a home. If you do want a particular breed of puppy go to a registered ethical breeder who doesn't breed for a commercial market, make sure you meet the parents of the puppy and ask questions. The power to shut down this brutal industry is in the hands of the consumer. Dogs are our best friends and puppy factories are the ultimate betrayal”.

This is a story about - EVERYBODY, SOMEBODY, ANYBODY and NOBODY.
There was an important job to be done
and EVERYBODY was sure that SOMEBODY would do it.
ANYBODY could have done it-but
NOBODY did it.
SOMEBODY got angry about that because it was EVERYBODY’S job.
EVERYBODY thought that ANYBODY could do it, but NOBODY realised that
EVERYBODY wouldn’t do it.
It ended up that EVERYBODY blamed SOMEBODY when NOBODY did what
ANYBODY could have done.

A university student delivers a pizza to an old man’s house. “I suppose you want a tip?” says the old man. “That would be great,” says the student, “But the other guy who does deliveries told me not to expect too much - he said if I got 50c I'd be lucky.” The old man looks hurt. “Well, to prove him wrong, here’s $5. What are you studying? “Applied Psychology” replies the student.

Topaz By Judy Johns (Coronet Bay)
She’s a pharaoh hound And she came from the pound And she was a sight to behold With ears of mobility Just like nobility And eyes the colour of gold She’s a pyramid pup And her ears stick up And her coat is the colour of honey Her nose is rose She has very long toes And her disposition is sunny She came from the Nile And she made me smile With her antics and her game, Her eyes are tender Her legs are slender And Topaz is her name. From the land of the Sphinx She still has her links With that great and ancient story Extremely elegant Highly intelligent And her ears are her crowning glory. Egyptian mummies are simply dummies Compared to this fascinating hound Quite inconceivable! Quite unbelievable! And to think she came from the pound.

NEW LOCAL HISTORY BOOK ‘Glen Forbes A Brief History’NEW LOCAL HISTORY BOOK ‘Glen Forbes A Brief History’NEW LOCAL HISTORY BOOK ‘Glen Forbes A Brief History’NEW LOCAL HISTORY BOOK ‘Glen Forbes A Brief History’ Nestled in the rolling hills of South Gippsland and the Bass River Valley, Glen Forbes is a close knit, farming community where residents support each other with local community activities and by getting together. The History Board proudly displays their rich local history for all to see and to give our youngsters some understanding of the past. With generous funding from the Bass Coast Shire Council, Westernport Water, together with proceeds from sales of a local history book Sledge to Studebaker by Jan Harper, the community came together and made it happen. The new Glen Forbes ‘A Brief History’ Publication was compiled by Tony Hughes in April this year, and was officially launched at the recent Christmas in July event held at Roger Bailey’s Glen Forbes property. A Brief History is a great read and includes some outstanding photos including the cover photo of the Glen Forbes General Store, probably taken in the late 1910’s. Tony and the History Group have done a fantastic job with this book, which I could not put down and I encourage you to get hold of a copy as soon as possible. The cost is $20 per copy and they are available from the Bass Valley Historical Society, at the Corinella General Store, the Wonthaggi Historical Society T: 5672 1830, by contacting Tony Hughes on 5672 4515 or by emailing [email protected] - all proceeds from the book sales are going to support gathering, recording and displaying of our region’s history.
