Aim: ‘A Love of Learning for a Lifetime of Opportunities’

We welcome everyone to our village school where all faiths, cultures and abilities

are received with love, care and respect.

We ended the last academic year on a high having been through an OUTSTANDING

church inspection and then a GOOD Ofsted inspection in which the parents and

children of this school really did highlight all the fantastic work and experiences

given to the children by our teachers and teaching assistants. However, with

everything we always get priorities to help us move forward further and these are

outlined, with the actions we will take to complete these, in our school development

plan. We are looking forward to developing the school not only using these targets

but also suggestions from you and the children.

Points on our development plan this year include:

Leaders and those responsible for governance should ensure that teaching

consistently extends pupils’ writing skills so that they achieve the highest possible

standards

Leaders and those responsible for governance should ensure that pupils continue to

develop their mathematical reasoning skills to enable them to solve more complex

problems across all aspects of mathematics

To enhance teaching and learning between Foundation 1 and 2

Health and Safety targets after our fire safety assessment in September 2017

Develop the use of reflective spaces within classrooms so they are used more

meaningfully for spiritual reflection across the whole curriculum

Involve children in regular evaluation of the impact of collective worship so that

they develop a greater understanding of the purpose of worship

Extend the opportunities for pupils to write their own prayers and ensure these are

used more regularly in school

All the relevant documents and evaluations can be accessed on our website. We

hope that you will join with us, not only to celebrate things we already do in our

school, but to support us in further development throughout the school.

Broad Hinton Bee Hive – Preschool News

Last term, before we sadly said goodbye to our ‘Rising 5’s’, we had so much fun

learning about farms, animals and keeping safe (including road safety and stranger

danger). We could be found, maybe you heard us, outside learning in the garden for

most of the time. We were also so proud of the children’s display in the church

flower festival and hope you enjoyed them too. We have already seen our children

happily settled into school and are now busy helping next year’s children prepare for

their transition to school.

What a lovely start to the new school year we are having! Alongside our topic

‘Autumn’ and ‘Where We Live’ we are once again taking the children on weekly walks

around the village. We will be looking for signs of autumn, learning about the

weather, numbers and letters (on doors and signs) – please give us a wave if you see

us!

The preschool is open 9am – 3pm and takes children aged 2 years and upwards. We

are able to accept Childcare Vouchers, 15 Hour NEG, 30 Hour Extended Entitlement

and Two Year Old Funding. Many parents often use the Busy Breakfasters (run by

the school), Preschool and then After School Club for full day care provision from

8am through to 5.45pm.

Social Media and Broad Hinton Primary School

Dear Parents and Carers

This note is sent to you as a direct response to some questions being raised and due

to recent messages on social media which we have been made aware of.

The Broad Hinton Facebook page, kindly updated by Mrs Whittle, has been in

existence for several years and is a vehicle for marketing the school and putting our

name on the map. The page is primarily for advertising events and giving people in

the school and wider community a feel of what we are about as a school and what we

can offer for families and children. Many schools use this way to market but please

be reminded that this is not another communication avenue. Newsletters and texts

are your first sources of information as well as the letters put in book bags for you

to see each night. Thank you again Mrs Whittle, you are doing a fab job!

However, Mrs Floyd and I are aware of several WhatsApp groups within school and

we would like to remind you of the dangers that can be with these to vent

frustrations and mention staff and pupils. I urge you to respect the professionalism

of our Headteacher and her staff, who consistently seek the best outcome of each

pupil, always considering safety and the wellbeing of the individual.

So please, come and talk to us, to contribute to the happy, healthy environment that

we have been blessed with.

Yours faithfully

Mrs Rod Palfrey Chair of Governors

Adapting your clothing, not your style

Dressability is a local charity based in West Swindon which provides a clothing alteration and adaptation service for people with physical and learning disabilities and the over 65’s.

Getting dressed is something that most of us do automatically. We probably spend more time deciding what to wear than putting on the clothes. It’s something we never think about because most of us don’t have to. However, for someone with a disability it can be a different story. When there is limited mobility, getting dressed and undressed can be a very painful and distressing experience as well as taking time out of the day. Dressability offers home visiting service together with free collection/delivery in Swindon and within a 25mile radius.

Whatever physical challenges you face Dressability can help tailor your clothing so that getting dressed/undressed becomes an everyday routine rather than a daily problem!

Please call us to make an appointment to discuss your requirements call 01793 512878 or email at [email protected] – www.dressability.org.uk

White Horse Cricket Club: Another Fine Summer

As we write this, the final touches of putting the ground to bed for the winter have just been completed. It was another successful season for Broad Hinton’s cricket club – White Horse CC.

The team finished a commendable 4th in Wiltshire League Division 3. Having been promoted to the division last Autumn, we consolidated comfortably and were close to promotion until later in the Summer when player holidays and injuries took their toll.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

We supported the ECB Allstars programme to introduce cricket to 5-8 year olds. We signed up 27 children for the 8week course – one of the highest numbers in the County. Blessed with good weather most weeks, the children and the parents enjoyed running around on Friday afternoons, learning the basic skills of the game, and tucking into the BBQ and bar. Children mostly came from Broad Hinton C of E Primary School, but we also welcomed children from surrounding villages. We hope this will create the next generation of players to keep the club going.

Thanks must also go to our Social Members who continued to support us in great numbers this year. It was great to see so many of you supporting us up at the ground at Manor Farm.

AWARDS PRESENTATION EVENING – ALL WELCOME

For those of you who wish to sign off the season in style, the WHCC Awards Presentation Evening will take place at Broad Hinton Village Hall on Saturday 18th November. Catering is provided by Coleshill Catering, there’s a fully stocked bar and hopefully some amusing speeches. An advert detailing costs and the menu are in an advert in this copy of the Local News.

COMMUNITY DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING & GUARDIANSHIP

The training session provided by South Western Ambulance Service took place on

Wednesday 20th October 2017. The Parish Council are grateful to the Village Hall

Committee for use of the hall for the training evening and opening the Bar.

As Julia Doel, Assistant Community Responder Officer for South Western Ambulance

Service (SWAST) says, “Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are purposely easy to

use. Anyone can use them – the machines themselves talk you through what to do, and

that, alongside advice from our emergency call-handlers, means that anyone can help to

save a life.

Cardiac arrest does not discriminate against age, gender or fitness – it can happen to

anyone, anywhere and at any time. It can be caused by many things including heart

attacks, strokes and major trauma, and early defibrillation for patients in cardiac arrest

can make all the difference to the outcome. The first few minutes of a cardiac arrest are

absolutely crucial so having this life-saving equipment available, while the Ambulance is

en route, gives the patient the best possible chance of survival. The more communities

we can support in having their own defibrillator, the better.”

Guardianship: We are still looking for more residents to agree to be a Guardian to

support the current 8 volunteers. All that is required of a Guardian is to sign up to a rota

to cover regular daily checks of the unit. This means looking to see that the green light is

lit and the defibrillator is not beeping; indicating a possible fault and contacting the SWAS

team or the Parish Clerk if there is a problem.

Naturally, the more residents who agree to sign up will lessen the frequency that each

Guardian has to check and will also help us to provide holiday and illness cover.

If you are interested please contact Wendy Law, Parish Clerk on 739048 or by e-mail

[email protected].

View from the Rectory

I believe it is true to say that in every day of our lives there is a time for silence, and a

time for speaking, a time to remember and a time to let go. November, it seems, is a

month for both. On the night of All Souls at Avebury Church, on Remembrance Sunday,

and again at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, silence itself will appear to

speak - and is not just an absence for a while of the sound of the human voice. In

contrast the 5th November ‘gunpowder, treason and plot’ resounds with crashes and

clatter and whizzes and bangs more reminiscent of war than remembrance.

Being still or silent can hold us captive and stir the imagination. We are very far removed

from simply doing nothing. What, however, are we doing in those two minutes? When

adults stop and bow their heads, when children stand with itchy feet in the playgrounds

and halls across our country remembering the soldiers who died that we might have

freedom. What are we remembering? Wars past and present, haunting faces of the long

dead, our own parts in conflicts domestic or communal?

For those who grow up in a digital age where it is possible to resurrect or "re-spawn" their

heroes on computer games when they are killed, this can be an important realisation –

that real people met real deaths. Armed conflict creates ending for some, and initiates

jagged lives for others. The Invictus games reminded us that in conflict too there is room

for life and triumph - over pain and injury and wounds of mind body and soul. And peace

is possible with understanding and reconciliation.

Being in Belfast for a service on Remembrance Sunday as part of the Peace Train

movement has shaped my remembering during the two minutes' silence since then – a

survivor of the Burma death march sat next to me and afterwards I asked him what he

remembered – he said the young lads who never left the railway track and are buried

along its stretch. He is long gone but I remember them for him. It seems important to

carry on remembering for others but remembering with peace and love and gratitude, not

remembering in bitterness, anger or grief.

What is it you remember? Who is it you remember? Who is it you remember for and

what will our remembering do? Well, I will also be praying for, and recommitting myself,

to work for peace, History repeats itself. It has to. No one listens. Someone once said it

doesn’t. So I remember to remind myself that it does not have to be this way and that

each of us has a part to play to bring the remembrance in the silence to action in the

noise of our world.
