The Friendship Note—A Newsletter of Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild, Sarasota, Florida
The Friendship Note Newsletter of the Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild, Inc. Sarasota, Florida
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I’m happy, happy, happy. It’s finally cooler. I
always bank on hot weather until Halloween. It’s
just a fact here in sunny South Florida. If it cools
down earlier, even better. It just makes you want
to get outside or turn off your A/C and open the
windows. It also signals the start of our
upcoming fall events and holidays. I love
working on Christmas projects and even belong
to a quilting group called Christmas Club.
Several years ago a few of my gal pals and I
decided it would be fun to meet once a month and
work on Christmas projects. We’d be sure to
have them done in time for Christmas that way.
That lasted for about six months until one
“renegade” decided she would bring something
non-Christmas to work on. It was all downhill
from there and as hard as I tried to herd the cats
back into the corral, I lost the battle. Now all of
us, including me, just work on whatever the heck
we want to. It doesn’t really matter what you
work on as long as you get to hang out with your
friends.
I know our member, Lynn Purple, is doing a
fantastic job getting our new members together to
meet and plan fun activities. From those
gatherings, new friends will be made and they
will form quilting groups just like ours. We, the
Guild leaders, really do try hard to make this
organization everything you want it to be. From
the teachers we bring in to teach and inspire you,
to the events we host throughout the year to make
it fun to be a member.
I hope you all partake in the Holiday Party
scheduled for Dec 9th. We have great food and
pies catered by Der Dutchman and a really fun
gift raffle with all the proceeds going to the Food
Bank. It’s a social event and one I look forward
to every year.
We also have the Winter Retreat coming up in
February. Check out the newsletter for all the
details. That’s a swell time, too.

So, in closing, I hope you try out some of our
social gatherings. You can make as much as you
want out of this organization. It’s up to you. And
if you like what we are giving you, maybe you
will want to give back by helping out when called
to do so.
Happy Apple Cider and S’Mores by the fire,
Cass

Quilts of Valor
Cass Bowen
I recently received this letter from Linda Fentriss. She is a member of the Peace River Quilters
Guild and the new Florida Coordinator for the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF).
“QOVF is a non-profit organization that makes and delivers quilts to veterans of the US Armed
Forces. You may have seen them in the news this past week or on TV. I will be presenting quilts to
some of the 300+ military personnel and veterans who requested quilts or who were nominated to re-
ceive quilts by friends and family after Brian Williams’ story about Quilts of Valor on the NBC Nightly
News. If you missed the broadcast you can use the link below to take you directly to the NBC website
and watch it there. You’ll be glad you did.
Quilts of Valor on NBC News
Because of this, we have been inundated with requests for quilts here in Florida. I was hoping the
Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild would like to donate some quilts to QOVF. We prefer red, white and
blue quilts. You can go to this link to see the requirement for these quilts and get patterns.
http://www.govf.org/content/basic-gov-requirements.html
If you cannot make a quilt, could you donate red, white or blue fabric to be used to make a quilt?
There is a group in Tampa that makes Quilts of Valor. They are not a guild; just a group of ladies who
get together once a month and make QOVs for our vets.
Please let me know if your Guild can help us out. If you can, let me know and I will make arrange-
ments to pick up the quilts and/or fabric.”
Sincerely,
Linda Fentriss
QOV Florida Coordinator

WORKSHOPS - 2014
Saturday, January 18, 2014, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Bonnie Hunter. Cathedral
Stars. Another great beginner’s class, and also fun for advanced quilters who want
instruction on using the EZ angle Ruler and the Tri Recs Rulers and a way to dig
into the scrap stash. Quilt is made from 2" and 3.5" strips, and is easier than it
looks!
Sunday, January 19, 2014, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Bonnie Hunter. Boxy Stars. Quick 8 pointed stars are made from 2.5" scrap strips with no set in seams! Blocks
finish at 12" for a quick lap quilt all from scraps. This class also works great with
Jelly Rolls.
Monday, January 20, 2014, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Bonnie Hunter. Virginia
Bound. Virginia Bound is the flagship quilt from her book "Scraps & Shirt-
tails". Based on the traditional Rocky Road to Kansas block, she revamped it for
foundation piecing! Even the setting diamonds are string pieced. A wonderful
border surrounds the quilt. Bonnie made this quilt using all the 'strings' and small
parts left from cutting up recycled shirts to use in quilt making.

Note: Class Fees have been raised for 2014. The fees below are reflective of that change.
CLASS FEES: Full-day $40, half day $30 Members rate (Non-Members full day $50 and half day

Member of the Year 2013 Karla Lynch
Last year I was fortunate enough to be chosen
as our member of the year. It was a great honor
for me. Now it’s time to choose the member of
the year for 2013. Look around you. Who is
that member who always comes through for the
guild? Who makes the guild a fun organization
to be a part of? It could be that person who’s out
front leading the charge, organizing things. Or it
could be that person in the background, working
like an Energizer Bunny. We had our quilt show
this year; was there someone who always works
hard to make it a success?
Please email your nominee to me at
[email protected] and be sure to include
why you want to nominate that person. It’s
wonderful to be able to read to the winner in De-
cember why she was chosen for the honor. At
the November meeting I’ll have ballots for you
to fill in the name of the person you want to vote
for if you’d prefer. Your ballot will be kept
confidential. You have one vote each.
At the December Holiday Party we’ll an-
nounce the 2013 Member of the Year. The win-
ner will receive a free class and their member-
ship will be free for 2014.
The list below are previous choices and can-
not be chosen again.
Joy Abbott, Nancy Adams, Bette Behanna,
Martha Bost, Cass Bowen, Carol Brown, Jackie
Cory, Tena Davis, Mary Ann Fanning, Addy
Fink, Marion Hassett, Joan Hatt, Carroll Jenkins,
Karla Lynch, Linda Nichols, Susan Ott, Linda
Pearce, Betty Ann Seeman, Becky Sommers,
Cathy Washburn.

contest titled “My Favor-
ite Quilt Shop” for the

about “A Quilter’s Jour-
ney”. A quilt shop that is
owned by two of our guild members, Lynn Yates
and Lynne Cheal.

24th of the month and your ad will appear in the
next month’s newsletter.
2015 Quilt Show Donor Quilt
Rose Ryan
Please join me and some of your quilting buddies to begin the work
on the donor quilt. We will be working on the paper pieced stars. All
the fabric has been precut and bagged (thanks to my cottage group).
We need to make 16 star blocks for the quilt. I know the picture only
shows 9, but we will make the quilt one row wider and one row longer
to make it bed size. We should be able to get many of the stars com-
pleted that day.
Bring lunch or order from any of the nearby local places (pizza,
subs, Chinese or McDonald’s). There is a full kitchen. Coffee and tea
will be ready in the morning along with some breakfast snacks.
Hope to see you there!
Bring your machine, an extension cord, the usual sup-
plies and a neutral thread. A small cutting board to keep
next to your machine and small rotary cutter are helpful in
paper piecing.

Operation: Quiet Comfort
Cass Bowen
I received a request for assistance from a
group called Operation: Quiet Comfort. They
are looking for quilters to put together quilts that
they have already packaged. They are denim
squares with messages on them that are sewn
into quilts then sent to injured service members
who are being treated overseas. There wasn’t
enough space in this month’s newsletter to print
their entire letter, but here is a website to their
newsletter to check them out and decide if you
would like to help them. This is their newsletter
page and you can look at a number of issues:
http://operationquietcomfort.com/newsletters.html

Pines Charity Quilts Update Mary Nissen
We have delivered 36
quilts to The Pines. There
are 14 more completed
which brings our total to
50. Our original goal was
82 quilts. So let’s try to get
to 42 more by the end of
this year. We can do it!!
Brown Bag Challenge
Karla Lynch
I hope you’re working hard on your Brown
Bag Challenge. Someone asked me a good ques-
tion the other day that I thought I’d pass along.
If your project lends itself to it, please put a label
on it. It can say “2013 FKQG Brown Bag Chal-
lenge” and your name. That makes it memorable
for the recipient. November is the last month to
turn in your project. So get going and finish up.
The projects that have been turned
in so far are super. It is going to be
a great reveal at the Holiday Party.

Linda Pearce
The following kind, gracious, selfless, dedi-
cated and generous people have offered to serve
this coming year and are proposed as our official
slate:
President: Karen Clark
First VP/
Education Chair: Elva Farrell
Second VP/
Program Chair: Mary Nissen

Per our by-laws, nominations are also al-
lowed from the floor for each of these positions.

phrase Hillary Clinton’s book title, “It Takes a

unique talent in addition to your quilting, and we
need the help of each and every one of you to
keep The Friendship Knot Quilters Guild one of
the most vital and exciting guilds in the country.

Dayspring Episcopal Conference Center
Ellenton, Florida (941-776-1018)
Join us as we celebrate the Chinese New Year (2014 Year of the Sheep) QUILT
STYLE! We have scheduled four full days of retreat time. You’ll have from 9:00 a.m.
Thursday morning until 8:00 p.m. Sunday night to sew, eat, and quilt. You can finish
those “UFO’s”, start new projects, learn some new techniques from your fellow retreat-
ers or have fun watching everyone else be productive while you eat chocolate. What
could be better, you say? How about no husbands, no kids, no housework, no cook-
ing. It’s all about YOU!
Our venue for the retreat is Dayspring Episcopal Conference Center which is just
North of the Manatee River, www.dayspring.dioswfl.org. It’s a lush, wooded setting,
quiet and serene, with cabins and houses for overnight guests. But inside our work-
room and our cabins we don’t have to be quiet and serene. We can be lively and
fun, and we are. Get your girlfriends together for a great time. Wine is permitted in
your cabins. Dress is casual. All meals are provided. Ask anyone who has been
before - it’s the best time!
