President’s Letter “Talent” I guess I just can’t get enough rejection! Now I’m thinking I want to write and illustrate children’s books. So, I’ve just read a “how to” book on the subject. I noted and underlined this: “The word yearn is the essence of talent…talent is composed of large quantities of yearning, hard work, a strong desire to express yourself, and a willingness to devote yourself to the task.” Now I’m sure you’ve all heard from your friends and acquaintances, “Oh, how I wish I had your talent!” Or also, “It must be wonderful to have such talent!” And, if you’re like me, you may answer, “Oh, it’s more hard work than talent!” It always amazes me that people think that doing something well just comes easily and naturally to “talented” people. I know for a fact that nothing I have accomplished, or am able to do relatively well, results from talent but rather an abundance of very hard work and much yearning. In the fourth grade, my classmate, Carole Barnes, was a cartooning pro. She got to paint Christmas scenes on the art room windows and the posters for all elementary school events. I had no clue how or why she had this “talent” while I did not. I was jealous, to say the least. I lost track of her in junior high school. I took every art class I could and majored in art eventually. I never saw her in one of my art classes. Years later, at a high school class reunion, I asked her why she had turned her back on her majestic gift. She told me, “Oh, it never seemed so special; I didn’t have to work at it at all!” She majored in math. continued on page 3 Next Meeting: November 14, 2012 Cottonwood Center for the Arts, 427 E. “Talent”

I guess I just can’t get enough rejection!

Karen Standridge, President, called the meeting to order at 6:15 PM.

Guests: Ashley Brown was introduced and welcomed.

Hosts and Chefs: Thanks to Chefs, Donna McFarland and Kathleen Murray, for a wonderful variety of chili and pumpkin pie. Thanks to Carole Sebben and Jean Sebben-Esch for hosting.

Minutes: Minutes of the September meeting were approved as printed.

Treasurer's Report: Kathy Murray gave the financial report as of the end of the month, September 30, 2012. There was a beginning balance of $3,125.64 in Checking and an ending balance of $3,716.48. Monthly expenses for September were $324.30, $140.00 of which was spent on the rent for Cottonwood. Collected members dues totaled $910.00.

The Money Market balance is $15,209.88, with total funds on hand of $18,926.36.

Committee Reports:

Marketing: Larry Haught reported that the International Watermedia Show will be advertised in the January/February and March issues of Artist Magazine, as well as the January edition of Watercolor Artist.

It was noted that the Colorado Watercolor Society Show (March 2 to March 24, 2013) requires all paintings to be under Plexiglas. City Glass does Plexiglas and will give PPWS members a discount.

Hosts and Chefs: Susan Truax needs one more host for November and two hosts for December. The December meeting will be a Potluck.

Membership: No report since Mary Gorman was not present.

Programs: Today’s program is the Auction of donated art supplies. The program for our November meeting will be a demonstration of “watercolor batik” by Carol Naylor.

Signature Members' Show: Dennis Palsgrove was not present. Members were reminded artwork is to be delivered to Cottonwood on Thursday, November 29, 2012, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.(See Page 6 for details.)

International Watermedia: Carol Naylor is still looking for volunteers. Sponsors and Patrons are being sought. The Patron/Purchase donors will be allowed to choose a painting from the exhibit for their donated amount.

Eight spaces are still available for the Linda Baker three-day workshops (June 5, 6, and 7 and June 10, 11, and 12, 2013). A $100 deposit will be needed by January 1, 2013, and workshop cost for PPWS members is $300.

Commercially prepared food will be required for the reception at the Pioneers Museum.

Library: Myra Patin announced any magazine with orange on the cover was the bargain of the evening. She also stated that many new books would be added to the library from those received and not sold at the Auction.

Old Business: Thanks again to Kris Storey for the new name tags and to Margaret Pasolli for assembling the board for the tags. Reminder: Donated art for“Art for a New Start” at the Business of Art Center is dueNovember 10.

New Business: Jon Khoury, Cottonwood Director, announced that Cottonwood will be sponsoring six thematic shows in the upcoming year, and the PPWS Signature Members'Show was one show retained on the schedule. Their upcoming “Dias de la Muertos Show” will be featured November 2 and 9, 2012, on television, Channel 6, at 2:30 PM.

PPWS members were asked to take the brief survey at www.gazette.com/survey to let the The Gazette newspaper know in which areas you would like to see them grow. The need for more visual art coverage was discussed.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:15 PM.

Program/Auction: Myra Patin, Donna McFarland, Becky Plack, Kathy Murray, Reveille Kennedy, and Margaret Pasolli, decked out in orange for “fall, fire, and pumpkins,” generated a lively auction. Vanna would be proud of them!

There were many generous donations, and PPWS members, who were victims of the WaldoCanyon fire, were allowed to choose items pre-auction. They expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to replenish their art supplies.

There were many interesting donations, but Susan Truax's vintage brass bed, from theMyron Stratton Home, was an exceptional item. The Auction crew estimated the Auction proceeds would be a little over $300.

President’s Lettercontinued from page 1

Do we have to suffer for our art, yearn for its success, and nurture it with our labors? Is that a “talent?” I believe it is. “Discipline is the refining fire by which talent becomes ability.” (Roy L. Smith)

In Diane Keaton’s new autobiography, Then Again, she writes that to do at least one scary thing every day is her new goal to stay flexible and strong. We watercolor artists don’t have to go too far to find that challenge! Go to your studio or dining table or closet or sketchbook or wherever you paint, tape down the shining white paper, wet your paints, get out your brushes, and SCARE YOURSELF! And, don’t forget about the yearning.
