A Moment With The Queen. By Mike Matejcic

Kitty Wells (Ellen Muriel Deason), country singer, born 30 August 1919; died 16 July 2012; age 92.

There were many “Women of Country” before her, but the door was busted wide open in 1952, when the

queen led the way for countless other “Girl Singers” with just one song.

Fast-Forward, and it was 1984 and Kitty Wells had arrived in town. The winter snow was bountiful but that

wasn’t going to slow up the big Double Eagle that was home-on-the-road to the Queen. I remember admiring

it on my way to the old OSCVI. Hanging around backstage, a startlingly loud whoop and a holler bellowed

out from down a cavernous hallway. Kitty’s son was warming up his extraordinary high tenor voice prepping

for the show. He emerged from around the corner in a glitzy cowboy suit, size 11 boots and requisite big

brimmed hat. His image had stepped right out of the 50’s. Seeing I was a little startled, the tall fellow jutted

out a big paw for a shake and howdy. “Hi… you the MC?” I started to stutter something, when he inter-

jected… “Just say good evening to the folks and let them know they’re in for a wonderful show, and now

please make welcome … Bobbie Wright”. I’ll take it from there. Relief swept over me. This might turn

out to be a good night. Did you know Bobby played the part of Willy on the TV Series “McHales Navy”?

He also found time to record 21 singles on the country charts, as well as touring the continent with mom and

dad.

I was always a big Johnny and Jack fan. Their beautiful brother duets were the stuff of raw mountain music

that I still just can’t get enough of. Together with Kitty, they made quite an impression and secured a place in

the cast of the Louisiana Hayride after the war. Then, in 1952, after Johnnie & Jack's hit recording ‘Poison

Love’, they were asked to join the Grand Ole Opry too. The Johnny and Jack duo continued to enjoy success

until March 8, 1963 when Jack Anglin was killed in a single car accident en route to Patsy Cline’s funeral. He

was only 46, and was married to Johnny’s sister, Louise. He left four children. You may remember, Kitty’s

husband Johnny Wright passed away just last year in 2011 at age 97 after 75 years of marriage.

By the end of the 50s, Kitty had more than 30 “Top 10” records in the Billboard Country Charts. She was

elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1976 and, at the Grammy ceremony in 1991, received a lifetime

achievement award, the first woman in country music to be so honoured.

Back in Owen Sound, the second half of the show was kicked off but a stuttering MC welcoming back the

Queen to our stage. She turned around and said thank-you, for such a wonderful introduction. I melted in the

wings. Johnny did his thing, and Bobbie did his. But it was Kitty… with “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky

Tonk Angels” that brought down the house – twice! She was a far cry from the women depicted in her

songs. She was truly the Queen.

Kitty Wells was born and raised in Nashville. She married Johnny Wright

(1914–2011) in 1937. They had three children: two daughters, Ruby ((1939-

10-27)1939–2009, (2009-09-27)aged 69) and Carol Sue ((1941-06-12)1941)

and a son, Bobby (1942).

A photo of Kitty and Johnny much as they appeared during their last perform-

ance in Owen Sound.

Editor’s Note: Great story Mike! Thanks so much for sharing it with us!!!
