President’s Podium
The tagline for this year’s World Workplace in San Antonio was “Smart Facility
Management Drives Smart Business”. There has never been a time during FM’s
history when this statement rang truer. The role of a Facility Manager today
encompasses so much more than simply maintaining the building operations. The
top professionals in our industry are highly educated innovators that reduce costs,
improve efficiencies and contribute to the long term success of their employers by
being proactive, not reactive to their facilities.
At the conference, which ran from October 29th –
November 2nd in San Antonio, there were a total of
102 educational sessions. A review of some of the
session titles gives a flavor for strategic, proactive
facility management. “Emerging Technology, FM
Implications”, “Linking FM to Organizational
Strategy: How to Develop a Strategic Facility Plan in
the New Normal”, “The Ultimate Savings: Life Cycle
BIM for Facility Management”, “Lighting Retrofits: A
Smarter Facility Management Option Now Than Ever
Before”, and “The 17 Mistakes made in Emergency
Plans and How to Avoid
& Correct Them” are a few examples. The challenge to
stay “ahead of the curve” has always been what KC
IFMA is about. We will continue to provide our
membership with relevant, valuable information to
assist in the ever changing landscape of Facility
Management.
The opening keynote speaker at World Workplace was Guy Kawasaki. Guy is the former “Chief Evangelist” of Apple and Co-Founder of Alltop.com. In his keynote address, Guy outlined steps necessary to create new products and services.
Two that rang true to me were “do something meaningful” and “bump/advance the curve”. At KC IFMA, we will continue to do something meaningful by attracting and equipping the Facility Manager of today and tomorrow. We will also continu-ally bump and advance the curve of knowledge to insure there is smart facility management driving smart business.
Included are a few photos of the conference. You might recognize KCIFMA mem-
bers Teena Shouse, moderating an educational session and Douglas Bills at the en-
trance to the Welcome Reception.
These are exciting times for our Chapter. As an Executive Board, we promise to continue to listen to needs, creatively consider ways to provide value for your in-vestment and set the bar high for what we plan to accomplish. There is always a need for talented, passionate volunteers. Don’t hesitate to contact me directly if you would like to get “plugged in” to KC IFMA. I’m certain we can find the perfect spot for you.
Respectfully, Russ Cooper, Kansas City Chapter of IFMA President [email protected]

Monthly Program Meeting
Tuesday, November 13, 2012 • 4:30 - 6:00 pm
Tour of Burns and McDonnell
Burns & McDonnell
9400 Ward Parkway
Kansas City, MO
The recently completed headquarters renovation for Burns & McDonnell is the focus of this month's IFMA tour. The entire 475,000 sq. ft. facility was recently renovated to meet LEED Silver requirements. Located where Marion
Kauffman once had their headquarters off Holmes and Ward Parkway in Kansas City, the complex has been home to Burns & McDonnell since 1996. With JP Morgan moving to the Sprint Campus, Burns & McDonnell took advantage of the opportunity to expand its headquarters facility to occupy the entire three building campus and consolidate many of its operations.
The move necessitated a need for a large meeting space to accommodate its employee-owners, and a new auditorium was added to the complex. The social and networking time will be hosted in the lobby of the new auditorium, with a brief presentation on the entire renovation to follow, and a tour of the auditorium, café space, fitness center and a typical office floor.
The presentation will focus on the complexity of designing a 450 person auditorium over an existing parking garage, how the new space is designed to accommodate an integrated architecture, engineering, design/build practice, and what sustainable initiatives Burns & McDonnell incorporated into the facility.
