Th at is how many post Bar/Bat Mitzvah students I have the honor of teaching in Teen Academy/Machon each class. With the energies of the Sisterhood, Brotherhood and Family Aff air that have taken upon themselves the task of feeding these young adults, each class is fi lled with learning that they simply will not get in any other venue. Th e issues we learn about and the Jewish responses to them are pertinent
to teenagers and meet them where they are. Th ey are issues of sex, drugs, dating, humility, social justice and the like. Each student is respected and each has learned to respect the views and sensitivities of others. And the class is not without a lot of humor - aft er all, it’s not everyday that the rabbi’s daughter is in a class with her rabbi dad who is leading a discussion about things that fathers and daughters don’t usually talk about!
I am beyond delighted that these students have participated in temple life with such enthusiasm. Th ese are the leaders of the temple in the coming years. Can you imagine if all 50 of these young adults came back to Beth Miriam as adults and took roles in the life of the temple? Of course it can’t happen but the truth is that because of the support of their parents, the love of the temple and the safety and security they fi nd here, Beth Miriam is not just a distant memory of a bar or bat mitzvah that remains the last Jewish connection they ever had.
Our Reform Movement has been struggling with this issue for some time and has created the Campaign for Youth Engagement. It is worth reading about at the www.urj.org website because it speaks to an issue that educators struggle with all the time. How do we keep our youth involved and how do we continue (or begin) to make Judaism meaningful?

Th e CYE - as it is becoming known by - is a praiseworthy eff ort. All aspects of youth engagement will be looked at from making religious school more meaningful to making the b’nai mitzvah ceremony more than a party to making the college experience something fi lled with Jewish life. Th e underlying idea, though, comes from the description of the program itself, “It focuses on Jewish experiences, not just Jewish education.” Jewish experiences are the key. And if those experiences are positive, they will have a profound infl uence on the life of the child.
I am excited about the direction our movement is facing as it has the potential to substantially change the paradigm of congregational life, involvement, and personal attachment. At Beth Miriam, I am happy to say, we have made great strides and great progress in this arena and it will be exciting to see what other programs and ideas our URJ comes up with so that we can, in the near future, have 100% post b’nai mitzvah participation instead of our present 80%!
Let Us GiveThanks!
Happy Thanksgiving!

On October 28th, we celebrated Mitzvah Day by going out to the Atria and performing for the residents. It was a great event. The music was wonderful and the audience sang along. Sammy Babitsky’s jokes were quite a hit. Jared Babitsky did a great job on the saxophone. Elliot Topper played several hits on the guitar, and even had a duet with his brother Michael. Michael Topper played the violin, and had some wonderful duets with his teacher, Tanya Pe-terson, who so graciously came and played. Steven Topper played the keyboard, and Robert Topper played the guitar and sang.

I hope you and your families are enjoying this beautiful fall season! I have loved my time with our wonderful Youth Groups! This fall has been full of fun activities and we have many more opportunities for our Temple youth to get involved in our vibrant Jewish community.
This October, fourteen of the SALTY members and I participated in New Member Kallah at Camp Harlam in Kunkletown, Pennsylvania. While this event was geared towards welcoming the freshman class into NFTY (North American
Federation of Temple Youth), our entire Youth Group had an amazing time bonding with other Youth Groups in the region and connecting with their Jewish identities. The weekend’s theme, “Everyday Heroes”, created wonderful discussions about bullying, leadership and ways that youth group members could be heroes in their everyday lives. I loved my fi rst NFTY retreat and I am looking forward to Winter Kallah at the end of December. SALTY has also been gearing up for the National NFTY Convention, which will take place in February 2012 in Los Angeles, California. We have been focusing on fundraising initiatives to raise money for our Youth Group participants who want to experience this life changing event. I will be sure to keep everyone posted on ways to support our Youth Group through our fundraising efforts.
This October fi fteen SALTY members and I spent a spooky afternoon at Six Flags’ Fright Fest. We were joined by Monmouth Reform Temple’s Youth Group (MRTSY) and had a wonderful time screaming on roller coaster rides and running from zombies! The SALTeen members and I had a festive night in the Sukkah during the harvest festival of Sukkot. The SALTeen members did an excellent job of decorating our beautiful sukkah with harvest décor. We even had time for a talent show after decorating our sukkah, and I was amazed by the musical and artistic talent of the SALTeens!
This fall we will continue with more great events for all of our Temple Youth Groups! The SALTeens and I will head to Git’ Fired up, a pottery playhouse, in Ocean Grove on Sunday, November 18th. The SALTY members and I will once again be joined by MRTSY as we venture to New York City on Saturday, November 17th to see Peter and the Starcatcher. We will also enjoy dinner at South Sea Port and hold a Havdallah service on the water. SALTY will also be collecting donations as we prepare for the Midnight Run in December. For this event the SALTY members will bring clothing and various hygienic products to displaced individuals living on the streets of New York City and surrounding areas.
I am also excited that Sasha Goldfarb Rivera will be joining our Youth Group family as the Tam Tam Advisor starting in January. Sasha will be temporarily taking over for Lauren Woehr while she is studying abroad for the spring semester. While Lauren will be greatly missed as she ventures abroad, I know Sasha will do an excellent job leading the Tam Tams. Thank you all again for your continued support and kindness. I am proud to be the Youth Advisor of such a wonderful Youth Group and I look forward to many more fun events. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Suggested Guidelines for Sponsored Shabbat Onegs The Sponsors of the Friday night Oneg are responsible for the entire Oneg, including all set-up, food and clean up. You should plan for a minimum of 60 congregants in addition to your personal guests. Please remember to remit $50.00 to TBM for required extra wait staff and kitchen help.
To help you in planning the Oneg, we suggest that you provide the following: • 2 (two) Challah breads. • Beverages such as tea and decaffeinated tea, coffee, as well as coffee and tea “condiments” such as sugar, sweeteners, half-and-half, milk, lemon, etc., and water and juice• At least 2 (two) platters of cake, cookies or pastries. Please feel free to provide additional assorted hot and cold food items, such as seasonal fruit platter, platters of sweets, small platters of vegetables, dip and chips, hot and cold hors d’oeuvres.
• Plates, cups (for hot and cold beverages), napkins, and utensils (spoons and forks).• Tablecloths.• Please note that all food should be plattered and ready to serve.• Please feel free to provide any decorations.
TBM’s kitchen is well equipped for your use. A suggested typical set-up for a Friday Night Shabbat Oneg would include the following, all of which is available at TBM:Four (4) 72” round tables and chairs; Two (2) 8x3-foot rectangular tables for food; and One (1) 8x3-foot rectangular table for beverages. One (1) coffee urn; andOne (1) hot water urn.Pitchers for water and juice.Serving platter for Challah breads.
Assorted kitchen equipment, glassware, platters, creamers and sugar bowls, serving utensils and ris-ers are available for your use. Please note that additional tables, chairs and coffee urns are also available.
How do I reserve a Sponsored Oneg? Please contact the TBM Offi ce at (732) 222-3754 to reserve your sponsored Oneg and to coordinate dropping off the food, set up and clean up. Please remember to remit $50.00 (Fifty Dollars) to TBM for required extra wait staff and kitchen help.
When should I drop off the food? Please coordinate with the Temple administration regarding when the kitchen will be available. Generally, the Temple is open until noon on Fridays and then approxi-mately an hour before services begin in the evening.
Are there any restrictions on the food I can bring? Please do not bring any pork or shellfi sh items. What if there is more than one event being honored on the Shabbat Oneg? Although some events are scheduled far in advance, such as a bar or bat mitzvah or wedding, others are not scheduled, such as a baby naming or engagement. Therefore, it is possible that there could be more than one sponsored event, with different Sponsors, taking place on any Friday night Shabbat. Please contact the TBM Offi ce to receive contact information for any other Sponsors, so that you can coordinate the Oneg with them directly.
Who can I contact if I have any questions about the Oneg? If you have any questions, please contact Meryl Ledwitz at [email protected].
