LexArts is a nonprofit community organization that works for the development of a strong and vibrant arts community as a means of enhancing the quality of life in central Kentucky. Through its annual Fund for the Arts, LexArts raises millions of dollars in support of local arts.

In turn, LexArts underwrites the operating expenses for a variety of Partner Organizations, awards grants through its Community Arts Development, Creative Venture Fund and Professional Development programs, and offers affordable exhibition and performance space for arts organizations.

LexArts programs and services are supported in part by the Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Commerce Cabinet, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Major support is provided by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.

The Living Arts & Science Center (LASC) is located in one of Lexington’s lowest income neighborhoods and provides free programs to many of Lexington’s most challenged schools. To make creative and unique opportunities in the arts and sciences available to all, the LASC also provides scholarships to low-income children and adults. In 2012, the LASC provided 313 scholarships to students who participated in over 3,300 hours of creative and participatory educational programs at the LASC.

Thousands have been intrigued by the 41 amazing barrels dotting downtown Lexington’s cityscape over the past two months. The history of bourbon and the history of Town Branch have been celebrated and our city is all the richer for these artist’s inspiring visions of Lexington’s past and future. As Lexington’s newest public art project draws to a close, it’s time to set our sights on where these barrels will ultimately age. At The Closing Celebration and Barrel Auction, 33 barrels will be on the auction block looking for a new home!

Of these 33 barrels, three were very proudly decorated by the people of Lexington. These three barrels, along with seven others, will have a lasting impact on and a special meaning to other Lexington arts organizations. Eight very lucky groups have been chosen to directly benefit from the auction of these terrific barrels. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the following barrels will be used to benefit youth arts initiatives of these programs.

The Lexington Philharmonic’s new Music Builds program connects music to a variety of academic subjects such as math, science and reading. Music Builds features interactive, multimedia programs based on the recent STEAM movement. STEAM emphasizes the importance of integrating the Arts into Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education. Studies show that arts integration improves math and reading test scores, increases student engagement and helps students develop long-term critical and creative thinking skills.

Lexington Children’s Theatre, celebrating its 75th year, will use funding from the Bourbon Barrel Project auction to fund scholarships to our theatre school programming.  Dedicated to Arts Education for Kentucky’s youth, LCT’s Education Department offers year round classes, summer camps, and residencies in our facility, as well as in schools, libraries and community centers throughout Kentucky.  Scholarship funding allows underserved Kentucky youth to receive all the benefits of arts education regardless of ability to pay.

The Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra’s North Limestone MusicWorks is a daily orchestral music program fostering positive development of Lexington’s youth by providing equitable access to high-quality music education. The program offers intensive daily study on string instruments and musicianship training for up to 30 second and third graders from Arlington Elementary School and operates at no cost to participants. MusicWorks is inspired by the musical and social philosophy of El Sistema, Venezuela’s national system of youth orchestras and choirs. El Sistema’s success in helping children build better futures has led to the creation of similar programs in the United States and around the world.

Lexington Art League’s Education and Community Outreach programming generates free educational and engagement experiences that are informed by our exhibitions and community partnerships. Our mission is to challenge, educate, enhance and engage our community through visual art. Through partnerships with local neighborhood programs Common Good, Castlewood Community Center and MusicWorks, LAL provides hands-on art experiences to children ages PK-12th grades. LAL’s Teen Classes and Internship program provides in-depth arts experiences for teens and college students, including mentorships with local and regional artists. Resources for families and teachers are available to connect the content of LAL’s art exhibitions to interactive art-making experiences including Family Tours, Downloadable Teacher Resource Packets and Classroom Visits.

The Virtual Quilt is a free digital platform that allows anyone to upload original artwork that will become a “patch” in our Virtual Quilt.
