March 2008 Dear Members and Friends: Thanks to your support in 2007, the Land Trust had its most productive year ever. We were, frankly, a little surprised in September when we discovered that we had crossed the 1,000-acre mark. It somehow snuck up on us. By the end of December, we had conserved 1,100 acres since our founding in 1989. What a year! We were particularly pleased with the donation of a conservation easement by former board president Yvonne Kuperberg covering 29 acres of beautiful forest in the lower Shinglemill Ravine. Our other 2007 land highlights include: • Adding 25 acres to the Paradise Valley Preserve, for a total of 58, and raising $200,000 from dedicated islanders toward the $2,200,000 needed to fully protect these properties. (See insert.) • Purchasing a beautiful 45-acre parcel that contains the heart of Needle Creek, including its convergence with Shinglemill Creek. • Completing a major habitat restoration effort in Shinglemill Creek, placing 53 more logs in the creek – for a total of 111 over two years. • Receiving two anonymous donations of land, one five-acre parcel and one 25-acre conservation easement. • Teaming with King County and the Cascade Land Conservancy to create four new shoreline preserves around Quartermaster Harbor. The preserves are located below Inspiration Point, at Neil Point, at Manzanita, and at Raab’s Lagoon. All told, in 2007 the Land Trust was active in the conservation of 26 parcels comprising 296 acres on Vashon and Maury. These are substantial accomplishments, made possible through the efforts of our members, volunteers, board and staff.
