c. Resolution to Approve a Partnership with the Hedgepeth Williams Family
Whereas, on January 31, 1944, the Supreme Court of New Jersey issued a ruling called Hedgepeth and
Williams v. Board of Education, Trenton, NJ that proved to be a precedent-setting game-changer across
the state and generated ripples of change felt across the nation; and
Whereas, on January 31, 1994, the Court rendered its Hedgepeth and Williams v. Board of Education,
Trenton, NJ decision in which the Court:
Ordered the TBoE to immediately enroll Janet Hedgepeth and Leon William in Jr. #2, and to
admit Black students to all Trenton public Schools by the end of the school year;
Prohibited every NJ board of education to refuse to enroll any student in any school on the basis
of race or skin color; and
Whereas, in 1991, the Trenton NJ Board of Education honored Mrs. Gladys Hedgepeth and Mrs. Berline
Williams by re-naming Junior High #2 as the Hedgepeth-Williams Middle School; and
Whereas, a committee has been formed to explore and plan for the recognition of the historic Supreme
Court decision of January 31, 1944 and what it means for the students of Trenton Public Schools; and
Whereas, the committee has decided to celebrate “Hedgepeth-Williams Day” on the last Friday in
January; now therefore
Be it resolved, that the Trenton Board of Education hereby declares January 31, 2014 “Hedgepeth-
Williams Day” throughout the school district.
