AP SCHOLARS Three students at Stacey High School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program

(AP) provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced

placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18% of the more than 1.8 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high

level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. Two of our 2010 graduates, Ashlee Kelps and Quanesha Carman, were named as AP

Scholar winners. The AP Scholar award is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. Ashlee and Quanesha, who are attending St. Mary’s

University, received enough AP credit to be considered sophomores for the 2nd semester of their first year in college.

Quanesha Carman Ashlee Kelps Jace Courville

Jace Courville qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these

exams. Jace has been attending the Falcon Foundation where he is working on being accepted into the Air Force Academy.

Stacey High School offers eleven AP classes: English 4 Literature and Composition, English 3 Language and Composition, Calculus AB, Computer Science, European History, United States History, Psychology, Spanish Language and Composition, German Language and Composition, Chemistry, and Biology. We have offered AP Government in the past but

have not had enough students picking this course in the last few years. Stacey offers pre-advanced placement courses in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-calculus, and English. Students wishing to take these classes need a very strong work ethic and desire for working above their grade level. Students taking advanced classes receive one extra point on their

grade point average for a pre-AP class and two extra points for an AP course.

On Tuesday evening Lackland Elementary school hosted 2nd – 6th

grade family science night. A large number of families showed up to get a hands on feel for many experiments in which they

worked on together. Teachers were there to distribute materials, but it was the parents who facilitated the

lessons! It was a great evening!

HELPING THOSE IN NEED The Family and Community Services class is planning to help a family in need. The

family has recently lost everything, and the students has made it their mission to make sure they have an amazing Christmas. We're asking you, if you have Christmas tree that you don’t need anymore, to please donate it to us. Please deliver it to Mrs. Duron’s room

if you have one. Don't worry about decorations--we're making stockings, ornaments, and even donating gifts. Let's make it a Christmas this family will remember!

Lackland ES Clover students traveled to the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) on Thursday, November 18th to visit the Applied Engineering Technology Department. Upon arriving, they first visited a laboratory where engineering students design, create, program, and test various robots used in specific research projects. They were able to view a recreation of the planet Mars landscape and discuss why certain robot designs would work on Mars and others would not. They also learned how models of objects are created using computer programs, powder, and glue to form a 3-dimensional object. They then had a lesson on the history of bridge building, how engineers have learned which

geometric shapes are stronger, and how to apply these practices into building their own bridges. Students worked in teams to see if they could apply engineering practices and

teamwork into building their own student designed bridge. After many attempts at building, tearing apart, and rebuilding, students learned that the best designs required lots

of planning and testing before actual construction.

Mrs. Torre’s SFA Class

Reading and comprehension strategies continue to evolve and improve in Mrs. Torre’s SFA class.

Students work with “strategy cards” as they team up to answer guided questions about the story selections. The depth and complexity of this strategy is evident in the meaningful

exchange of ideas and thoughts.

Third Graders and Technology

Armed with brand-new Asus Laptop computers and headphones, all third-grade students continue to advance their technology proficiency in the

classroom. What are we doing to change the world?

We are learning how to become agents of change through technology understanding and application!! Thank you, Lackland ISD Family, for this

gift of learning!!!!

When I do get free time I love to cook and do crafting activities like crocheting, sewing, and making jewelry with my daughter. 6. What would you do if you won the lottery? Happy Thanksgiving from students in Mrs. Allen’s 1st grade classroom. Here the students enjoy showing off their turkey crafts.

Not Just for Kids: the Message Behind Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax

Written by Estela Salinas and Ariann Turpeau (6th grade)

Many things in the story The Lorax reminded me of reality.  Many people cause problems because they don’t realize that for every action, there is a consequence.  In The Lorax, the Once‐ler cuts down trees in order to make “thneeds”, which then caused the animals that relied on the trees to move away and find another home.  The Once‐ler continues to want more money and therefore continues to increase his business.  When he builds his larger factory, the birds have to move away because the smoke was intoxicating their lungs so they could no longer sing.  The fish began to build gunk in their gills because the Once‐ler was releasing extra chemicals into their ponds and were later forced to leave in search of clean water.  All of these events happen in the real world.  We often cut down too many trees and leave animals without shelter and food, forcing them to look for new environments or die.  Our factories and cars create and spread pollution by burning fossil fuels.  We pollute our air and water which again affects the animals that live there.  It seems that we don’t realize that what we do to the earth, we do to ourselves.  The ironic thing is that the Once‐ler causes all of this damage in order to make thneeds.  The people buy the thneeds from the Once‐ler because he tells them that they can be used for so many things, but in reality they don’t really need them.  We too buy things that we don’t really need.

At the end of the story, the Lorax, a character that tries to get the Once‐ler to realize the harm he is doing, finally gives up and leaves the Once‐ler with one word written in rocks, “UNLESS”.  The Lorax was trying to say that unless you do something about the problem, no one will and it will never get any better.  The message of the story is to take care of the environment, watch our actions, and to care about others.  Many people take the earth for granted and do not think about their actions and the consequences that may occur because of them.  Maybe we can start with something small, like using less fossil fuel, planting more trees, or choosing to buy only the things we actually need and are eco‐friendly.  Maybe then we will start making things better again.

Environmental Tip Of The Week

Leaky faucets can waste thousands of gallons of water each year, like money down the drain. Repair or replace old or damaged fixtures.

These sixth grade students achieved A/B Honor Roll, had perfect attendance, and had no conduct citations for the first quarter. This is quite an

accomplishment and required great dedication and perseverance. Keep up the great work!

On Wednesday morning parents visited the children during SFA for “Raising Readers”. Hosted by teachers Ms. Cassie Boatwright and Mr. David Garcia, parents learned about Listening

Comprehension, Think and Connect, and Write On. These are just a few of the components that help make our students shine when it comes to comprehension and fluency in reading!
