I’ve been a die-hard consignment shoppersince way before it was cool, chic, fun or justplain sensible. Then I had the opportunity

to work at my favorite ladies clothing resale foralmost nine years before launching my own.I’m in my fifth year at the same location andwhat a joy ride it’s been!! One of the best thingsa shop owner can hear is, “You would neverknow these are second hand clothes, they lookbrand new, and I see some that still have theretail store tags on them!” This is the kind ofshop every owner wants to have and I havebeen truly fortunate to have ‘cream of the crop’consignors. While I do not consider myboutique to be high end, (meaning veryexpensive brands), I do carry labels that anywoman would be happy to have in their closet.

I consider clothes shopping to be awonderful relaxation technique. I would haveto equate this to hunting or fishing for ourmale counterparts. I go when I have thewhole day to spend mapping out the shopsthat I want to explore and having lunch at aneat out of the way place that I ordinarilywould not be in the neighborhood to go to.After all, that housework and laundry will bethere again tomorrow, so why not enjoy yourtoday if this is your Zen?!

So, let the treasure hunt begin…with noexpectations about what you will find. Upand out by 9:30 to get to the first destinationon your list since most resale shops open at10am. The key is to look at everything on theracks from 2 sizes smaller to 2 sizes larger. Inresale, pieces may have been altered and thesize tag is no longer correct. And remember, small, medium and large sizes are not thesame small, medium and large sizes that theywere 5 years ago. Are you ready to try a newcolor, but unsure if you look like a dead fish init? Ask a fellow shoppers advice, 99% of

women WILL tell you if it is sooo your newbest color or, if you know and trust the shopowner, ASK!! It has always been my policy totell you the truth about color AND fit, whether you really want to hear it or not. It isa reflection of the way I do business if you arewearing something from my shop you shouldhave left on the hanger for the next person.

Try things for every occasion if it speaksto you, from jeans to that strappy formal. Youwill always have a need for the perfect littleblack dress or that classic dark suit. If it wasnot in your budget for that day, ask aboutlayaway, because when you find a fabulousformal or those $248 retail pair of jeans for$60, why not choose layaway in order to ownsomething you would not pay the retail pricefor in this lifetime or the next!!! A great deal isa great deal.

What satisfaction I get when I pull on that‘perfect fit’ pair of jeans, knowing they are: A)already broken in. B) already shrunk. C)already the perfect length. That not onlyapplies to jeans but hopefully every piece I findon this trip. And the best part, that I’m savinghalf or more of retail price. What womandoesn’t love to go home and say, “Honey, justlook at how much I saved on all this!!”

Clothes shopping can be hard or it can bean adventure. Finding a totally chic item thatyou saw in a catalog for an over the top pricetag can make it all worthwhile. So, go with anopen mind…it takes time and patience andwork. Shopping at a resale with a welcomingatmosphere and a genuine interest in howyou look and feel about your purchase is animportant part of customer service. Resalecan and should be a rewarding clothesshopping experience.

Most of us, at one time or anotherhave donated to a charitableorganization those items we no

longer need or use. While the idea behindthe donation is charitable, many of us missthe opportunity to save a little on our taxesat the same time. Properly documenting thedonation can result in additional write-offscome tax time. Non-Cash Charitabledonations, along with Cash donations, property taxes, mortgage interest, andmedical expenses above the IRS limitationthreshold, make up most of the itemizeddeductions many of us deduct on ourFederal and State Income Tax Returns.

When making donations, a few simplesteps can make the donation much easier torecord and support come tax time. Use yourdigital camera to take pictures of the itemsbeing donated. Special emphasis should beplaced on photographing new or unuseditems to show that they were still in originalwrapping. This type of documentation notonly provides you with proof of what wasdonated, it lends additional proof as toquantity and quality of the items donated(were the items new, like new, slightly used,or well worn). Since most digital camera’salso date stamp the images, you will alsohave a dated receipt that shouldapproximate the date shown on the receiptfrom the charitable organization.

When valuing clothing, personal items, and furniture, keep in mind that the FairMarket Value of the item is the amount thatyou are allowed to deduct. Used clothing isworth far less than what you actually paidfor it. Also, keep in mind that only clothing

in good or better condition can be deducted.A good judge of values would be the thrift

store prices that you find similar items for. While no list can provide you with what youshould deduct, valuation approximations onSalvation Army or Goodwill websites mayassist you in arising at the value of yourdonation.

A very important part of the process isto make sure you keep theacknowledgement receipt the charitableorganization gives you. Even though mostof them are very vague, they should becompleted in their entirety and signed bythe recipient, thus establishing the date ofthe donation.

I would also suggest reading IRSPublication 561 – Determining the Value ofDonated Property – to help you betterunderstand what you can deduct.Remember, there is nothing wrong withletting Uncle Sam subsidize your charitablecontributions. If you feel guilty, just donatethe tax savings to a local charity, and theyreceive the benefit of your efforts.

In the early 1980’s, with the assistance ofmany volunteers, the ChristianCommunity Service Center made the

decision to open a resale shop. The effortwould act as a place to receive the manydonations that were being collected fromthe community and channel them into anongoing fundraising effort for theorganization. The Sunshine Resale Shoporiginally opened in a small space on thecampus of St. Luke’s United MethodistChurch. In 1988, the shop moved to its’current location on Bellaire Boulevard. With25 years of persistent growth, CCSC’sSunshine Resale Shop is continuing its’legacy of offering quality goods at reasonableprices to the Houston community.

Through the efforts of the shopmanagers and over 90 weekly volunteers, the Sunshine Resale Shop has thrived. Storeproceeds benefit the programs of CCSC.Last year the shop’s income made up 25%of CCSC’s total gross revenue budget. Salesare directly related to the quality andquantity of goods donated to CCSC.Donations are needed in order to continueto help fund CCSC ‘s programs and furtherour mission of serving the poor, hungry, disabled and otherwise needy whilerespecting an individuals religious, ethnicand cultural differences. All goods receivedare sorted, tested and inspected by ourwonderful staff of volunteers. Many ofthese volunteers work multiple daysduring the week to ensure that a steadyflow of funding is available. Volunteers arethe lifeblood of our organization.

The shop managers and volunteerswelcome you to shop from our wide varietyof merchandise. It is not uncommon to findbarely worn designer shoes for $15, abeautiful set of Spode china at an incrediblylow price or a wonderful Duncan Phyfestyle sofa. With recycling being the 21stcentury buzz word, vintage jewelry andpurses are in style. Two of the shops lovelyvolunteers clean and refurbish most pursesand jewelry donated to the shop. Their careto detail is greatly appreciated by ourcustomers. Decorators frequent the store

looking for desirable collectibles and theyrarely leave the store empty handed. TheSunshine Resale Shop boasts to have itsown “art guru” who graciously peruses artdonations and prices the pieces accordingly.Recently, an original George Ahgupuk wasdonated. It currently is for sale for thecollector of native Eskimo Art.

I have listed many reasons you wouldenjoy visiting the Sunshine Resale Shop, but other incentives include: *PersonalizedService - our volunteer staff is vested inCCSC’s mission, *Resale - is less expensivethan items found in an “antique” or “retail”store, *You are investing in the Houstoncommunity. The Sunshine Resale Shop islocated at 5407 Bellaire Blvd., in the BellaireTriangle. Come by and take a look at whatwe have to offer and help those in needwhen you shop.
