1.- Minnesota operator uses Tellabs GPON solutions for an aggressive upgrade.

Preparing for the Future, Woodstock began to look for a future-ready access platform that could support services such as IPTV and video on demand. Knuth also wanted a proven vendor with the staying power to continue evolving that platform.The problem within the access-equipment market, Knuth said, is that “Company A comes out with a good product but, a year later, Company B leapfrogs them. Company A is not big enough and well-enough established to do the research or spend the research dollars to keep up with Company B or to leapfrog them.”Knuth chose the Tellabs® 1150 Multiservice Access Platform (MSAP) with integrated SIP interface and GPON line modules for a FTTH solution. The choice was based partly on Knuth’s decades of experience with Tellabs equipment and his expectations of the vendor’s staying power.The Tellabs 1150 MSAP’s non-blocking architecture was another key factor. With its 720-Gbps backplane, 44 Gbps to every multiservice card slot and 10-Gigabit Ethernet uplink capabilities, the Tellabs 1150 MSAP has the scalability to help Woodstock stay ahead of customers’ bandwidth requirements. Knuth expects that in a few years, many customers will want to boost their access speeds to 40 Mbps or 50 Mbps.Woodstock has deployed 3 Tellabs 1150 MSAPs in a ring and plans to add a fourth. Eventually it will install a fifth Tellabs 1150 MSAP in a point-to-point connection off the ring. Although the ring now supports GigE transport, Knuth said Woodstock likely will ramp that up to 10 Gbps to handle all the IP traffic among the 5 exchanges.Desktop Fiber Eventually, Knuth also likes the Tellabs 1150 MSAP’s GPON line module because “that’s the latest technology, and that’s what we use.”Woodstock has no immediate plans to take fiber all the way to the desktop, but Knuth said he may consider that application within the next several years. “That would bean advantage because you could put a splitter in a business system, put in indoor ONTs and run fiber right to the desktop.”http://www.tellabs.com/news/reprints/insight_3q10_woodstock.pdf

3.- Nuevo Gerente de Tecnología en Infocorp

6.- VDI backup: Desktop virtualization's impact on data protection procedures

DATA BACKUP AND DATA PROTECTION, One of the most frequently overlooked side effects of implementing virtual desktop software is the burden that it will place on the data protection process. For the storage reseller, this brings an opportunity to help a customer create a virtual desktop infrastructure, or VDI, backup plan that will address user needs and maintain IT sanity. The good news is that the virtual part of VDI makes data protection procedures manageable. In a non-VDI world, the most common strategy for protecting endpoint devices is to tell users to "copy the important stuff to the file server," an instruction that is frequently ignored. With VDI, all this user data becomes the responsibility of corporate IT. It's within reach of the standard data protection procedures, but VDI backup could cause a capacity spike on the SAN, depending on what gets virtualized.There are typically two groups of workers whose desktops are virtualized: the shift worker and the knowledge worker. In the shift worker use case, several workers will use the exact same desktop hardware at different points during the day, but each can have their own "customized" desktop. The hardware they access the desktop through acts like a terminal into the VDI host. In the increasingly popular knowledge worker scenario, on the other hand, all laptops and desktops are encapsulated by

creating a local virtual machine on the user's computer to be the "corporate authorized" instance. This instance is then synchronized with an image of itself on the corporate VDI. In both cases, especially the knowledge worker scenario, VDI backup can have a dramatic impact on capacity and as a result have a big impact on data protection procedures.

In fairness, this is not the capacity equivalent of moving the data from hundreds of corporate desktops to the SAN overnight. Storage and virtualization capabilities, such as writable snapshots, compression and deduplication, will all help reduce capacity requirements. There will, however, be a net increase in storage needed to support the environment because users will install their own applications, keep a copy of their own email PST files and, of course, have unique files within their home directories. While individually none of these has a big impact, when combined and multiplied across hundreds or thousands of laptops and desktops, the effect can be staggering. Garantiza el derecho de cualquier usuario de Internet para utilizar, enviar, recibir u ofrecer cualquier contenido, aplicación o servicio legal a través de Internet, sin bloqueos arbitrarios o discriminación."Es un paso concreto para tener mayor transparencia en el mercado de banda ancha, estimulando la competencia por calidad de servicio", afirmó el Ministro de Transportes y Telecomunicaciones, Felipe Morandé.A contar de hoy, Chile se convierte oficialmente en el primer país del mundo en garantizar el principio de neutralidad de red, fijando un marco de transparencia y derechos para los usuarios de Internet.La nueva Ley garantiza el derecho de cualquier usuario de Internet para utilizar, enviar, recibir u ofrecer cualquier contenido, aplicación o servicio legal a través de Internet, sin bloqueos arbitrarios o discriminación.Por su parte, el Subsecretario de Telecomunicaciones, Jorge Atton, destacó que el Gobierno sigue avanzando en su agenda de telecomunicaciones, cumpliendo con sus compromisos en materia de competencia.A partir de esta fecha, la Subsecretaría de Telecomunicaciones (SUBTEL), tiene 90 días para dictar el reglamento de la Ley.

8.- Telcordia presentó su apuesta para la portabilidad numérica en Chile

En Chile, Telcordia se asoció con ADEXUS y juntos han seguido muy de cerca el caso de México, que incorporó portabilidad numérica en el tiempo récord de 6 meses durante 2008 de la mano de Telcordia. Las soluciones de portabilidad numérica están funcionando en el mundo hace 15 años. En EEUU partieron en 1994 y ADEXUS en Chile como integrador de sistemas, está trabajando con Telcordia para poder implementar este tipo de soluciones en los operadores del país.En el evento de presentación ante la prensa, Tom Kershaw, Vicepresidente Senior y Gerente General de Soluciones de Interconexión de Telcordia, destacó que la Portabilidad Numérica es una tendencia en pleno avance en el mundo entero, donde los precios perderán importancia frente a los nuevos servicios que los operadores ofrecerán a sus actuales y potenciales clientes.Además, el experto adelantó que el Estado jugará un rol clave durante los próximos meses, especialmente respecto de las normativas que regularán este nuevo escenario, que a fin de cuentas, se convertirá en una norma mundial.De Mundo en Línea 25 Ago.

9.- Chile ratifica su liderazgo regional en Tecnología

Pese al terremoto que afectó a Chile el pasado 27 de febrero, el país ratifica su liderazgo regional en el terreno de las nuevas tecnologías. De acuerdo a los resultados del Indicador de la Sociedad de la Información (ISI) elaborado por la consultora de negocios everis y el Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos de la Universidad de Navarra, el ISI chileno se situó en el segundo semestre de 2010 en 5,77 puntos, registrando un incremento interanual del 3,4%.Dentro de la buena marcha del indicador en Chile, destacaron los Servicios TIC y, en particular, las ventas minoristas online. Con US$130 anuales por persona (crecimiento interanual de 69,2%) Chile triplica la media latinoamericana en este tipo de comercializaciones.

10.- Demand for IPTV Video Content Changes the Broadcast Business

Who would have thought two years ago that cable companies in the United States would start losing subscribers to the Internet? Fast forward to Summer 2010 and you'll find yourself in a weak U.S. economy where household budgets have gotten so tight that six of the eight largest U.S. cable operators reported record video subscriber losses.While cable companies lost 711,000 subscribers in the second quarter of this year, IPTV companies gained more than 400,000 subscribers, as more and more people turn to the Internet for entertainment. The "digital natives," as the industry likes to call them, have quickly created a culture dominated by Netflix, Hulu and free Web video-on-demand. Unfortunately for the cable companies, younger audiences have become skilled in their ability to find free content. If the jobs market remains bleak, they may find that paying for video content will become as obsolete as the dial-up modem.Fortunately for satellite and the IP industry, this discussion has taken place for some time and instead of marching forward with the same content delivery strategies, the focus has been placed on technology, quality of service and security. Dish Network recently launched its own version of Hulu, which will enable both subscribers and non-subscribers to access their content database on a pay-to-play pricing structure.
