NOTES FROM FATHER TOM
MARCH 31, 2019 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT
"Pange Lingua Gloriosi" Those beautiful Latin words! Whenever I hear the beginning of St. Thomas Aquinas’ famous hymn I get chills. That’s because I am usually carrying the Eucharist in a procession, with incense, servers, deacons, and a crowd behind me. There is something solemn and sacred about the chant and it’s hard not to recognize that God is present right here! As a priest I feel incredi-bly privileged to have been able to lead these processions, carrying Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, accompanied by solemn chant. Pange Lingua is usually chanted at two processions: the Solemnity of Corpus Christi in June and on Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) of Holy Week. We will be chanting this hymn on Holy Thursday after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, when the Blessed Sacrament will be taken from the church to the altar of repose in the parish hall, and kept there for adoration till Mid-night. It will be the beginning of the Sacred Triduum, the tabernacle in the church will stand empty until the great Vigil on Holy Saturday. There is a beautiful tradition called the “Seven Churches Visitation” of visiting seven different altars of repose on Holy Thursday - remembering how Jesus asked his disciples to “stay and watch” with Him in the garden of Gethsemane. Pange Lingua Gloriosi Corporis Mysterium - “Sing, my tongue, the Saviour's glory, Of His Flesh, the mystery sing” roughly translated
into English… This Eucharstic hymn was written by St. Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century, but set to a much older melody of a hymn about the cross dating from the 5th century! Most Catholics are familiar with the last two stanzas of the hymn which begin with: “Tantum Ergo Sacramentum” or “Down in Adoration Falling” sung after Adoration at the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The an-cient rhythm of Pange Lingua is thought to have come down from a marching song of Caesar's Legions: “Ecce, Caesar nunc triumphat...” known in English as “Caesar's Triumph.”1 As we prepare for Holy Week, why not take a closer look at Pange Lingua. There is a website called traditionalcatholicliving.com which teaches families how to sing Catholic hymns and chants. I found on older video there that teaches Pange Lingua and have shared it on our parish’ Facebook page (If you don’t have Facebook you can still access the video by going to our parish website!) Let’s take a look at the English translation of St. Thomas’ great hymn:
Sing, my tongue, the Saviour's glory, Of His Flesh, the mystery sing; Of the Blood, all price exceeding, Shed by our Immortal King, Destined, for the world's redemption,
From a noble Womb to spring.
Of a pure and spotless Virgin Born for us on earth below, He, as Man, with man conversing, Stayed, the seeds of truth to sow; Then He closed in solemn order Wondrously His Life of woe.
On the night of that Last Supper, Seated with His chosen band, He, the Paschal Victim eating, First fulfils the Law's command; Then as Food to all his brethren Gives Himself with His own Hand.
Word-made-Flesh, the bread of nature By His Word to Flesh He turns; Wine into His Blood He changes: What though sense no change discerns. Only be the heart in earnest, Faith her lesson quickly learns.
Down in adoration falling, Lo, the sacred Host we hail, Lo, o'er ancient forms departing Newer rites of grace prevail: Faith for all defects supplying, When the feeble senses fail.
To the Everlasting Father And the Son who comes on high With the Holy Ghost proceeding Forth from each eternally, Be salvation, honor, blessing, Might and endless majesty. Amen. Alleluia. Blessed Laetare Sunday! ~Fr Tom
