X. biguttata (R i s so , 1816) a n d X. macleayi B a r n a r d , 1947. T h e g e n u s is res t r ic ted

to the M e d i t e r r a n e a n , the eas te rn At l an t i c O c e a n and the coast of southern

Af r i c a . M o r p h o l o g i c a l l y , the closest re l a t ive is the g e n u s Porturnnus L e a c h , 1814

but the two g e n e r a can eas i l y be d i s t i ngu i shed by the shape of the front of the

c a r a p a c e . Xaiva species h a v e the f ronta l r eg ion of the c a r a p a c e p roduced wel l

in a d v a n c e of the first p a i r of an t e ro l a t e r a l teeth , w h e r e a s in Porturnnus it is on ly

s l ight ly p roduced . T h e g e n u s Xaiva w a s es tab l i shed by M a c L e a y in 1838, u s ing

as t ype-spec ies a new species (X. pulchella) c augh t in the in te r t ida l zone of the

South A f r i c a n coast .

B a r n a r d (1947 , 1950) s y n o n y m i z e d X. pulchella w i th Xaiva biguttata (R i s so ,

1816) , a c o m m o n spec ies f rom the coast of the M e d i t e r r a n e a n S e a and the

eas te rn A t l an t i c O c e a n f rom E n g l a n d to the C a p e V e r d e I s l ands .

In i t i a l l y , the spec ies we r e cons ide red to be d is t inct by severa l au thor s ( A .

M i l n e E d w a r d s , 1862; O r t m a n n , 1894; S t e b b i n g , 1910; Ba lss , 1921) , but the

s y n o n y m y es tab l i shed by B a r n a r d (1947 , 1950) w a s sub sequen t l y accepted

th roughout ( K e n s l e y , 1970; Penr i th & Kens l e y , 1970; Kens l ev & Penr i th , 1980;

Kens l e y , 1981; M a n n i n g & Hol thu i s , 1981) . H o w e v e r , M a n n i n g & Ho l thu i s

( 1981 ) ca l led the a t tent ion to the necess i ty of a c o m p a r a t i v e s tudy u s i n g ma te -

rial f rom both loca l i t i es ( sou the rn A f r i c a a n d M e d i t e r r a n e a n - N o r t h e a s t A t l an -

t ic) in order to c l a r i f y this p rob l em .

T h e ana l y s i s of the spec imens f rom both a r e a s showed these to be d i s t inct ,

severa l impor t an t a n d constant d i f f e rences h a v i n g been found . T h e r e f o r e , they

1. I'he c a r a p a c e contour is c l ea r l y d i f fe rent . In A. pulchella the pos te ro la te ra l

borde r s a re qu i t e s t ra ight ( f i g . l b ) , w h e r e a s in X. biguttata they a re concave

( f ig . l a ) .

2. T h e c a r a p a c e su r f ace is r o u g h e r in A. pulchella, and the crests a re pro-

duced . In A', biguttata the c a r a p a c e is smooth and the crests a re not p roduced .

3. T h e c a rd i a c r eg ion is more convex in A', pulchella than in X. biguttata.

4. T h e crest on the dorsa l su r f ace of the c a r p u s of the w a l k i n g legs is bet ter

deve loped in A', pulchella than in the nor the rn spec ies .
