Nose-to-tail connectivity

Adequately addressing the needs of the different ‘clients’ on the aircraft

What does it mean?

Flight crew

Cabin crew

Passengers

Nose-to-tail

Very differing requirements

Flight crew require very secure, reliable, robust connectivity for mission critical AOC and ATC communications

Cabin crew vary from CRM, to bonded stock information to critical telemedicine apps

Passenger applications generally more recreational; but, expectations of terrestrial services (and prices!)

The aircraft transmit ever more data to ensure optimal safety and efficiency

Business at the front, party in the back

Flight crew Optimising safety and efficiency

Seamless connectivity is vital for FANS operations – not just on Oceanic routes, but also over land masses where infrastructure is not available

Critical ATC and AOC data requires a network that consistently performs to adopted industry standards

Ability for ground ops to uplink flight plans to FMS to manipulate updated data enables significant cost savings potential

Cabin crew Combining passenger satisfaction and efficiency

Providing connectivity to cabin crew has multiple benefits

• Enhance passenger experience

• Mitigate medical diversions through telemedicine applications

Provision of a secure, ubiquitous network is fundamental to the successful implementation of cabin crew applications

Passenger connectivity Social media and beyond

Passenger connectivity is becoming an expectation

• Of passengers, especially on long-haul sectors

• Of aircraft operators on all new airframes

Going beyond legacy IFE

Social media is just the start – over the top messaging (BBM, WhatsApp, iChat) prevalent terrestrially

Adoption of 3G/4G/LTE apps is lightning

Operational data - trending

New aircraft types drive greater hunger for data

• New engines • New airframe structures/materials

Opportunity to drive airline operational savings

Increased tracking

IFE and other non-operational data

Network evolution

Technology moves at a significant pace

Step changes in bandwidth = greater accessibility to driving value applications

Lower cost per bit

• Correlative economies of scale

• Adopt more applications to achieve further operational and cost benefits

Evolving capability

Classic Aero <10.5Kbps

Swift 64 <64 Kbps

SwiftBroadband <432Kbps

GX <50Mbps

Solving the airline conundrum

While providing a nose-to-tail solution makes conceptual sense, the application is not always so easy…

Many differing stakeholders, all with unique requirements:

• Flight Ops – tracking, scheduling

• Engineering – engine data, ACMS, flight operations quality assurance

• IFE/Cabin – IFE updates, CRM (gate info etc), seat back apps, Wi-Fi, Cellular etc.

• Procurement - $$$$

Consolidation of requirements to implement the correct service solution is essential

Straddling the stakeholders
