FRESHWATER MAKER SYSTEMSThe latest Reverse Osmosis Technology from Norwater AS
VISION
- To be a preferred supplier of quality RO Freshwater maker systems & services
The primary business and product group is the NorWater Freshwater Makers. By the use of the Reverse Osmosis technology, these systems convert seawater to potable water for use on ships, rigs or onshore. As of 2015, there are more than 200 NorWater systems in operation world wide, by major clients like Statoil, BP, Seadrill, Odfjell Tankers and many more. These are supported by an efficient and competent after sales team in Norwater, with an increasing number of partners in a global network..
Norwater AS (previously Eide Marine Tech AS), is located on the west coast of Norway, in Kvinnherad – between Bergen and Hauge-sund. The company is fully owned by local Norwegian owner Barge Invest AS. From years of experience in the maritime- and offshore industries, Norwater AS has evolved to become a niche supplier of vital products and services to an expanding customer base.
Norwater AS also has a range of own design NorBarrier HSE Equipment. Products include Belt Barriers and Self-Closing doors/gates – all specially designed to meet the most strin-gent set of requirements in the North Sea. As of 2015, more than 2,000 NorBarrier units are in operation, the majority in the North Sea. Customers include Statoil, BP, Seadrill, Stena Drilling, Odfjell Drilling to mention a few.

ABOUT US
VISION
- To be a preferred supplier of quality RO Freshwater maker systems & services
Reverse Osmosis is a well-known process which has been under continuous development since the first experimental systems were introduced back in the 1950s.
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification technology that uses a semipermeable membrane to remove larger particles from drinking water. In reverse osmosis, an applied pressure is used to overcome osmotic pressure.
Reverse osmosis can remove many types of molecules and ions from solutions, including bacteria, and is used in both industrial processes and the production of potable water. The result is that the solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side. To be “selective”, this membrane should not allow large molecules or ions through the pores (holes), but should allow smaller components of the solution (such as the solvent) to pass freely.

Applying an external pressure to reverse the natural flow of pure solvent, thus, is reverse osmosis.
The process is similar to other membrane technology applications. Moreover, reverse osmosis involves a diffusive mechanism, so that separation efficiency is dependent on solute concentration, pressure, and water flux rate.
Reverse osmosis is most commonly known for its use in drinking water purification from seawater, removing the salt and other effluent materials from the water molecules.
The Reverse Osmosis Technology
There are obviously pros & cons with various sources for freshwater supply for your vessel or rig. Norwater AS is product specialist for Reverse Osmosis only, but would still like to highlight some areas where a Reverse Osmosis system would imply added value versus alternatives:
• Easier installation (less piping)• Reduced operational cost (maintenance, fuel consumption)• “Slow Steaming” (fuel consumption)• Environmental legislations compliance• Added flexibility• Increased water quality control• Low energy consumption
WATER QUALITY GUARANTEEThe fresh water produced by NorWater Reverse Osmosis Systems is of high-quality potable water standard, exceeding requirements set by both the WHO (World Health Organization) and NIPH (Norwegian Institute for Public Health).
Reverse osmosis systems from Norwater produce high quality potable water from sea water. Our products are proudly manufactured in Norway.
Why Reverse Osmosis as your source for fresh water?
• Compact design • High grade materials • Easy maintenance access• High pressure pump spe-
cially designed for RO• System design reducing

NEW
TECHNICAL WATER
The NorWater range also includes the additional feature to produce «Technical» or «Utility» water.
This water is more pure than normal potable water (< 10ppm) with different areas of application, like cleaning of chemical tanks as one example. The production of technical water is solved by a 2nd stage of membranes and the use of outlet water from 1st stage as inlet water to 2nd stage of membrane filtration. Norwater clients have included this product as part of a cost reduction program.

WATER
From time to time there may be reasons why you would not retrofit a normal freshwater maker pack-age to your machinery room. You may need the fresh-water supply only for a limited time period, or there could be a case where there are practical limitations preventing such installation. In these cases, a con-tainerized system on deck may be the ideal solution.
In a containerized system all parts and equipment are installed and fixed inside the container, including pre-treatment, post-treatment and all piping and cabling.
Interface points will be:• sea water in• potable water out (to tank)• waste water out• freshwater supply for flushing• electric supply• air supply
Norwater containerized systems can be supplied DnV 2.7.1 approved for offshore lifting as well as thermal insulated with air conditioning for use in warm areas. We are flexible in capacity, feel free to present your need to us! We can offer solutions both for rental or purchase.

NORSOK / ATEX SYSTEMS
A Reverse Osmosis Freshwater maker system includes more than a filtration unit with membranes. To en-sure the highest quality of potable water and a long lifetime of your investment, a proper “Pre-treatment” and “Post-treatment” of the water is both recommended and required.
FRESH WATER SYSTEM SUPPLY
A typical Norwater scope would for the “pre-treatment” include a feed pump for seawater supply as well as pre-fil-tration elements such as sandfilter, carbonfilter or high flow filtration. Common objective being to eliminate particles too large for the membrane filtration of the RO-unit and removal of chlorine if present. Between the RO-unit and the fresh-water tank, we would recommend pH-filters and chemical dosing. This to increase the pH-level of the drinking water and to add taste before drinking.
Finally, after the freshwater tank we recommend a UV system as a final barrier for bacteria prevention to ensure healthy and good tasting water. The main advantage from a system purchase from Norwater is that the whole system is calculated based on client specification. This benefits the end-user in terms of system uptime and lifetime, as well as reduction in daily operational cost.
