My initial reason for enrolling in the Discipleship Group was for additional understanding of the Bible and how to implement it into my daily life. I feel fulfillment in that respect but, being a “people person,” I find myself looking forward to each class in order to meet, greet and interact with new and old friends each week. Most of us have needs, concerns and issues. This is a caring, understanding group and a kind, non-judgmental Pastor to guide us. (“Go – Thursday Morning Group!!) Harriet Lewis
What a wonderful way to deepen and grow in my faith! Our group discussions were lively and insightful in a warm and caring setting. I've learned so much through our sharing. Barbara Cruse
Thank you Pastor Choi for making the Disciple groups available to NUMC congregation. Since I sing in the choir, I see many familiar faces each week but I haven’t had the opportunity to really get to know anyone. I greet them during the “greet each other” portion of the service but that is all too brief. Through the 3 groups of classes led by Pastor Choi, I have found common grounds, friendship and understandings of many viewpoints through the readings and sharing with classmates.
In Disciple group I have not only gotten better acquainted with folks, but I am learning more than I ever have before about John Wesley and Methodism and I have been a Methodist for 64 years. I find Wesley’s approach in a constant search for truths and growth with our God on this journey through life to be very positive and hopeful. I encourage everyone to partake of this valuable spiritual awakening. Barbara Nathanson

ADVENT BEGINS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 27, 2016
ADVENT derives from the Latin adventus, which means “coming.”
It is a season of four weeks including Sundays before Christmas
that calls us to prepare for the coming of Christ, for the birth of
Jesus. There are many different ways to prepare during Advent.
This year let me suggest two simple ideas for families.
1) Create an Advent Wreath by making or purchasing any wreath of greens (real or paper etc.), 3 purple candles and 1 pink candle to place in/on the wreath - Use your Advent wreath as a centerpiece. Every night at dinner or before bed (or once a week on Sundays) instead of saying your usual dinner or bedtime prayer, light the candle (or tape on the paper flame) and say an Advent prayer-any prayer focused on Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.
2) Join us on the Second Sunday of Advent for an Advent Party! Sunday, December 4 at 3:00pm Holiday Cookie Decorating in the Fellowship Hall.
$7 gets your family 1 dozen cookies to decorate & a box to put them in. We’ll provide the
cookies, frosting, decorations & cookie box. Take them home or give them as a gift!
Purchase tickets in advance in the church office.
After you’ve decorated cookies join us at 4:00pm in the Sanctuary for the NUMC Solid Rock
Band’s Christmas Concert. Hear your favorite Christmas Tunes (Swing, Jazz, & Rock) complete
with some sing-a-longs. Playlist includes: Jingle Bell Rock, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the
Year, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Let it Snow, Silver Bells, Frosty/Rudolph/Santa Medley,
Silent Night and much more!

Next Primetimers Trip – November 12
Walking Tour of Union Station and lunch at Clifton's Cafeteria
The Primetimers will visit Union Station for a guided walking tour from 10:15 - 11:45 AM. The tour
will last 1.5 hours. This Spanish Colonial Revival and Art Deco style building was built in 1939 and
is now home to the Los Angeles City Metro Lines. Following the tour we will meet the bus to go to
the famous Clifton's Cafeteria for lunch and should return about 2:00 PM. Meet the bus near the
YAC at 9:00 AM. Cost for the bus and tour is $30.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Senior Ministries Advisory Team met with its new Chair Peggy Walters to review all of the
services and activities offered to seniors. Two new members, Heather Slutsky and Barbara Stiles,
were added to the group. In the following months each of the services and activities will be
reviewed so that everyone is made aware of them and be given an opportunity to participate in
those that interest them. Many volunteers are needed to make these programs a success, so
please reflect on volunteering for upcoming to-be-announced events.

Church & Society Movie
Have you ever wondered how other societies view issues differently from the U.S.? Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Michael Moore takes a look at several countries, mostly European, to see how they address some of the problems we are faced with here. The topics focused on include education, drug abuse, labor rights, women's rights and the prison system. This is a chance to see alternative solutions and whether they might be able to work here. The screening will be presented by Church and Society on Monday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Kendall Building.
Taizé/Prayer and Devotion Service
After several years serving as leader of the monthly Taizé/Prayer and Devotion Service, Jacquie O’Connor wishes to express thanks to Pastors Ferguson and Petty who supported the service and to Vivienne Weber, Gene Schmidt, Bruce and Diane Gelvin, and Amybeth Lake for their dedicated assistance, to Don Brown for his emailing assistance, to Ric Wilson for his technical advice, to Joan Coston for making the announcement flyers, to Delia Curiel, Melissa Graham, the late Catherine Phillips, Paula Plummer, Barbara Nathanson, Dan Ryan, Phyllis Schneider, Linda Stelling-Mayhall, Peggy Walters, and others for contributing their time and talent, and to all the attendants who made the service special with their faithful presence. As Jacquie continues to pursue graduate studies, it is time now to pass on this leadership position as it was passed to her from Amy Goss who in turn received it form Rev. Mark Ulrickson. If you are interested in carrying on this lovely service of prayer in song, word, and silence, please contact Pastor Choi of the church office by the end of November. Jacquie is happy to provide the details and materials needed to create and conduct a spiritually meaningful and successful service. Jacquie O'Connor

"Reflecting the love of Christ, thank you to Esther Beckman’s Church family for your support and care; Sally Taylor and her team and all who helped make Mother’s memorial service so special as we sought to honor Mom’s life." The Beckman & Stone Families
Hello Church,
We are Rebecca and Zac Atkinson, and for the last couple of months we have been attending NUMC. It's been a wonderful experience for many reasons. The people of NUMC are always warm, happy and kind. We've felt welcomed from our very first visit and members have been nice enough to take notice of us. On a Sunday when Rebecca was unable to attend service because she was under the weather, Zac was asked if she was okay. This simple neighborly gesture is just a small example of the amazing heart we have seen from members of NUMC.
Additionally, the sermons have been relatable, heartfelt, and educational. Reverend Choi's worship leadership has helped us grow in our understanding of the Lord and how we can relate that to our everyday lives. The lay leaders have also shown great passion, and we see many ways in which NUMC can help us to grow our faith and learn to be better disciples of Jesus Christ.
As we've learned more about NUMC's music, vacation bible school, and other programs, we see that NUMC is a vibrant church that is very active with its membership and the community at large. Northridge United Methodist Church has made us feel at home so we have decided to become members of the church. We're excited to officially join NUMC and look forward to meeting and worshipping with all of you.
Thank you for having us! Rebecca and Zac Atkinson
On Sunday, October 2 three people joined our church family. (R to L): Mary Ellen Brandt, Zac Atkinson, and Rebecca Atkinson who was also baptized on this special day.
