A Mission Statement is defined as a formal summary of the aims and values of an organization. You may have noticed on the Financial Statement included in the Sunday bulletin on December 11 that at the top of the Statement was the new Mission Statement for NUMC. It is also listed at the top of the front page of this December Methodist newsletter.

It has been a long time since a Mission Statement has been discussed or printed. The Church Council has been working on developing a statement that clearly reflects the basic purpose for the church and by which we want to live. Thanks to a sub-committee from the Council that included Steve Allen, Steven Klotz, Amybeth Lake, Charles Mortensen and Denise Woerner. Several different mission statements were presented to the Council at the October 11, 2016, meeting. This is the one selected by the Council:

To celebrate God's grace and love while inspiring disciples of Jesus Christ

for ministry in our community and the world.

This is to be our guiding theme, and it will be included on all of our documents so that we can be reminded of our mission and our purpose. In all that we do we need to be sensitive that we are living up to our Mission as we do God's work.

Children & Family

Happy New Year! We have celebrated the birth of Jesus and the power of the Christ child to

transform the world. (See pictures below) Now, let us use this New Year as a fresh resurgence in our

dedication to being a disciple of Christ and sharing the Good News of Great Joy! Let us be persons

who nurture the innate relationship God built right into our hearts and the hearts of our children

through prayer. Let us answer the call to weave prayer into the fabric of our family’s everyday life.

On Sunday January 22 the children will be participating in Prayer Rotation Stations in Sunday

School and they are inviting all the adults of the congregation to share in these special prayer

activities in the Fellowship Hall between services. Have breakfast & renew your prayer life!

Cost of the theater ($24) and bus ($20) a total of $44/person. Meet the bus near the YAC at 1:45 PM. Sign up in the office or Fellowship Hall. April 22 - Nixon Library Being considered. Movie Night On Monday, January 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kendall Building, Church and Society will screen "Serving Life," a 2011 documentary film which takes viewers inside Louisiana’s maximum-security prison at Angola, where the average sentence is more than 90 years. The prisoners within its walls are the worst of the worst – rapists, kidnappers and murderers. With prison sentences so long, 85 percent will never again live in the outside world. Instead, they will grow old and die in Angola. Serving Life documents an extraordinary hospice program where hardened criminals care for their dying fellow inmates. In doing so, they embark on a journey that may end in personal rehabilitation. “Serving Life” reveals the humanity that exists inside each and every one of us,” said Whitaker. “In the Angola prison’s hospice, we meet inmates who decide to take an opportunity for redemption, reminding us of the connection that exists between each and every human being.” The volunteers are trained, pushed and tested. Some fail, but some succeed and discover that the human touch can reach the soul. “I thought maybe if I helped somebody else,” one inmate says, “that would help relieve some of the guilt.” This film was narrated and executive produced by Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker, and directed by Lisa Cohen. The documentary is Not Rated and runs 1 hour and 25 minutes.

All Church Hike Enjoy stunning views of Topanga Canyon and the Pacific on this 3-mile hike. This trail is appropriate for all ages and abilities, and dogs on leash are welcome.
