Thank You Tammy Hickman, Newsletter Editor Once again I want to say thank you for providing my family and me time for a Sabbatical. While Sarah the girls and I are away, the hope is that the Renewal/Sabbatical time will not be something only for “The McCormicks” but especially renewing for the entire congregation. Part of that renewal will be hearing fresh (already renewed) voices from the pulpit on Sunday mornings. Rev. Amy Duiker will be preaching several Sundays. Rev. David Fleming (who preached our stewardship sermon last November), Rev. Jackie Nowak (who is also a Certified Christian Educator), and Rev. Linda Niece will be preaching too. They all bring years of experience and creativity and The Holy Spirit in their worship leadership. You’re in for a treat. In addition to the renewing worship experiences, the Session will be going through a time of renewal and preparation for the work we have ahead as a leadership team in the fall. They will be studying a resource called Developing the 7 Marks of Congregational Vitality. This document comes from the Presbyterian Church USA Office of Theology Formation and Evangelism. The document and the best practices included in it are a prime example of the strength of being in a denomination. The good news is that you can also be a part of the work and visioning for what God is calling us to do and be. There will be weekly bulletin inserts on Sunday morning that you are invited to use prayerfully. (Continued on next page) Summer 2019

Tammy Hickman, Newsletter Editor

Once again I want to say thank you for providing my family and me time for a Sabbatical. While Sarah the girls and I are away, the hope is that the Renewal/Sabbatical time will not be something only for “The

McCormicks” but especially renewing for the entire congregation.

THE NORTHERN LIGHT

(continued from page 1)

Please take the insert home, pray for insight from the Holy Spirit and read the Scripture selection on the front. Please then reflect on the text using the questions on the front and the journaling space on the back of the insert. Then please read the additional Scripture references at the bottom of the insert on the second side. These texts coincide with the “7 Marks of Congregational Vitality”. So as you read them, pray for the Session and for me to be open to how God is leading us to live into the future of Northminster Presbyterian. Thank you for your help and for your faithful walk with Jesus Christ. We anticipate some surprises and challenges as we look to what is next for us. Regardless of the work ahead, God is with us and has called us to this beloved community to bear witness to the Risen Christ Jesus. Rejoice! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Hallelujah!

Session Highlights

The Session met in stated meeting May 16, 2019. Rev. Dwight McCormick opened the meeting with prayer. Ruling Elder Debbie Dodds shared a devotional reading.

The Rev. Melissa Tidwell, presbytery Committee on Ministry liaison for Northminster, was present to help facilitate a discussion of a PC(USA) resource: “Developing the 7 Marks of Congregational Vitality”. The Strategic Planning Committee was interested in using this resource to effect renewal for the congregation during Rev. McCormick’s absence. After discussion, session decided to spend time educating itself about the program and planning how to work with the congregation and the Pastor to implement it in the New Year.

Worship and Music Committee has obtained guest preachers for the ten Sundays of the Pastor’s sabbatical leave. Rev. David Fleming will preach on May 26 and June 16; Rev. Amy Duiker will preach on June 2, June 9, July 14, July 21, and July 28; Rev. Linda Niece will preach on June 23 and 30; and Rev. Jacki Nowak will preach on July 7. Communion will be celebrated on June 9 (Pentecost) and on July 7.

Finance Committee report: The financial report for April, 2019 showed an income of $12,312 and expenses of $15,885, giving a deficit of $3,573 for the month of April. Session approved purchasing a refurbished computer for the bookkeeping office, to upgrade the current computer that is quite out dated and very slow.

Session approved a motion from the Mission Committee that Northminster again participate in a shoe drive (on Aug 17 and 24) to support the Water Step program.

The next stated meeting of Session is June 18, 2019 at 7:00 PM with Rev. Melissa Tidwell moderating. Please continue to pray for the Pastor and Session as we serve this congregation and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Each week for the next 10 weeks there will be an insert in the bulletin that contains a Bible verse and 4 questions for your consideration. The back of the page will have additional lines for journaling during the week. On the bottom of the journaling page are additional Biblical references if you choose to do additional work. If you choose to follow this reading/study plan, please save your pages. At the end of the ten weeks we will provide a way to bind them.

Mission Committee News Summer 2019

Annual Shoe Drive on August 17 and 24 Here is a reminder of how the WaterStep program works: Access to clean water is one of the biggest problems that humanity faces. 1 in 10 people on the planet do not have access to safe water. To get an idea what that is like, try using only 1 1/2 gallons of water a day for all of your water needs. This includes water for drinking, bathing, brushing teeth, cooking etc. This is the amount of water some people use daily in countries where WaterStep works. WaterStep is a nonprofit that provides safe water to communities in developing countries. They train people on how to use safe water solutions like water purification, health education and well repair, empowering communities to take care of their own water needs for years. By donating your unwanted shoes to WaterStep you can help them bring safe drinking water to children and families all over the world. WaterStep sells the shoes to an exporter and the revenue generated supports their life saving water projects. Shoes of any type, size or condition will be accepted, from high heels to high tops, and especially athletic shoes, so clean out your closet. In addition to funding water projects, donated shoes keep hundreds of tons of waste out of our landfills. This year our church will be hosting the shoe drive on August 17 and 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the church parking lot. Come donate! Also be sure to give your friends and neighbors one of our brightly colored cards to remind them of the drive. If you would like to help, sign-up sheets will be available in the family room. Let’s outdo ourselves by donating more shoes than the previous 4 years! Pentecost Offering The Pentecost Offering will be collected on June 9th. Of this amount, 60% will go to Presbytery and 40% will be donated to Oesterlen Services for Youth located here in Springfield. Animal Welfare League Collection During June, a box for donations of old blankets, rugs, towels and wash clothes for the Animal Welfare League will be located in the Family Room. Other Collections… During the summer don’t forget to bring in those used pill bottles for the Matthew25:Ministries. Also, we are still collecting Box Tops for Education. They can be placed in the large envelope on the bulletin board in the hallway beside the restrooms.
