Transcript of NORTHMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH THE NORTHERN LIGHT · One way we will be feeding folks is by...
A Word from the Pastor . . . The session at Northminster is working harder than it has in a while to make sure that we’re a cohesive unit-a team that is working to promote the Kingdom of God and lift up the Gospel of Jesus Christ to Springfield, and beyond.
We spent time at a retreat recently and are continuing to follow up with the survey results that we gleaned over the past year and a half. I’ve spoken in the past two newsletter articles about some of our mission projects that are a result of the survey findings.
I want to point out that a theme we came up with through the survey was a desire for Northminster Presbyterian Church to feed people spiritually, emotionally, and physically. We believe people are whole when these three areas of need are addressed. While we know our church is not all things to all people, nor can it be, we believe that we have gifts to offer in service to the Kingdom of God that can help feed all of God’s children who are put in our path.
One way we will be feeding folks is by enlisting your help. Many people through the survey process indicated areas of interest where you felt you would like to serve. Session members, committee chairs and board chairs will now be calling people who listed their names in those particular areas of interest and asking you to serve. Please be watching for the call and know that your offer to serve will help to build up this part of the Body of Christ as well as the Body of Christ Universal. You are needed and wanted as a fellow servant in the Kingdom of God. Even if you did not answer a survey and indicate an area in which you would like to serve, there will be opportunities for you at Northminster. One easy way you can help right away is to invite someone to worship this Sunday, and every Sunday. Did you know the number one reason people attend worship for the first time, or for the first time in a long while is be-cause someone personally invite them to attend? You have that kind of influence with others. Did you know that? I invite YOU to invite someone to come to church with you on Sunday. I know you can do it. As a church we count on you to do it. God calls you and all Christians to do it. In fact inviting people to worship to hear about the Gospel is one of several re-sponsibilities we have as followers of Jesus Christ. So invite someone as a grateful response to the gift of salvation you’ve been given through Jesus Christ. You will be glad you did. I along with the session look forward to building up the church and making disciples in the name of Christ Jesus our Lord with your help.
In Christ, Dwight

THE NORTHERN LIGHT
The Mission and Outreach Committee will again be collect-ing gifts for those in need during the Advent Season. On Sunday, December 4th and Sunday, December 11th we are asking you to bring Gas Cards for Project Woman to help with transportation to job interviews, counseling, and other necessary trips, and Toilet Tissue for the Interfaith Hospitality Network. You may bring the items either Sunday. Mission will be delivering the items the week of December 18th.
________________________ On Saturday, November 12, we served breakfast to 100 peo-ple at the Clifton Ave. Church of God Food Pantry. Sixty (60) handmade hats were chosen by those attending. In De-cember we will offer hats again to those who come to the breakfast/food pantry. A big thank you to all the knitters and crocheters. Knitters Eileen Gorby and Sally Asper were inadvertently omitted from the last newsletter. Thanks to all! Please keep knitting and crocheting adult hats so we can par-ticipate in Operation Shoebox for our military next year. A shoebox filled with necessary items and goodies is sent to any deployed military each Christmastime. A few years ago we participated when 30,000 boxes were sent. As an ongoing project, we knit preemie caps which are used at the Springfield Regional Medical Center. If you have any questions, call Emily Spriggs at 399-1473.

A NOTE of THANKS from HABITAT for HUMANITY
Dear Carol and Friends: We want to thank you for coming to our work site on the East Rose Street on Saturday, October 8. We appreciated all the work that was accom-plished and your willingness to help. Carol, thanks so much for organizing the volunteers from Northminster for this event. Labor on the homes is provided by volunteers and partner families; this allows us to keep our costs down. Our partner families are served by the wonderful people of the community as this minis-try seeks to put God’s love into action. Time is a precious gift to give and we appreciate each of you sharing it with Habitat. All volunteers and donors are a blessing. In partnership, Matthew S. Wilson Executive Director

Christmas Pageant & Christmas Brunch
Come to hear the telling of the Christmas story, as the chil-dren and young people of our church sing and proclaim the good news of Christmas during worship on Sunday, December 18th when they present “Angels, Lambs, Ladybugs, and Fireflies.”
After the Christmas Pageant and worship, the Deacons will host a Christmas brunch.
A variety of good food is being planned and everything will be provided by the Deacons.
You’ll want to be sure to include this Sunday
in your Christmas plans this year!
Hanging of the Greens, Lunch, and Christmas Caroling Following worship on Sunday, December 4, don’t miss your opportunity to help decorate the church as we celebrate the Advent Season. The children will be rehearsing for the pageant while adults decorate the church. Those who participate are invited to a sloppy joe lunch provided by the Music and Worship Committee. After lunch those who wish can come along for caroling at Eaglewood and Villa Springfield.
Christmas Eve Worship 6PM
On Christmas Eve we will worship together at 6PM to celebrate the birth of our Savior with a Service of Lessons and Carols. Come to sing Christmas Carols and hear once more the story of Jesus’ birth. We hope the 6 o’clock hour allows time for folks to finish any last minute shopping or wrapping, attend wor-ship, and then still have time to gather with family and friends for dinner or other special plans after the service. We invite you to spend a portion of your Christmas Eve in worship with us.
Christmas Day Worship The last time Christmas fell on Sunday was in 2005. We realize many of you will be skipping worship on Christmas Day to spend time with your family, and that is fine! If you don’t have other plans, we hope you will wear your Christmas sweater and come to celebrate the birth of our Lord with us. We will be serving com-munion by intinction that day, and instead of our regular CAFÉ, we will have a light brunch following worship.

ADULT FORUM - Advent Study:
“Rejoice! Reflections on Four Seasonal Hymns” Beginning November 27, the first Sunday of Advent, Elder Sharon Stout will be leading an Advent study from The Thought-ful Christian on four favorite carols:
“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”
“Silent Night” “O Little Town of Bethlehem”
“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” We will be exploring the rich emotional and experiential content of the lyrics. Don’t worry—we won’t have to sing (unless we want to). So plan to take a 45 minute break from the seasonal madness to spend some time learning about and enjoying our cherished carols.

Session Highlights The session met in regular stated meeting October 25, 2011 in the Family Room. The Moderator, Rev. Dwight McCormick, opened the meeting with prayer at 7:00 PM, followed by a Scripture reading and a meditation.
The Pastor reported that the continuing education event that he attended in Austin, Texas October 17-21 was very helpful. It was an intense group experience process, spending about six hours daily in the group working on accountability, truth-telling, and handling conflict.
Treasurer Bill Harrison and Finance Committee member Elder Jim Cut-ler are looking at ways of increasing the earnings of the invested funds.
Report from Deacons: Current balance in the Deacon’s fund is $1,250.00. Visitations of shut-ins and delivery of home communion have begun. Delivered 75 bags of groceries (donated by the congrega-tion) to the Clifton Ave. Church of God food pantry, and also received a $400 check from the Springfield Club for the food pantry. They are co-ordinating the November 16th evening potluck dinner, and will be serv-ing a dinner for the congregation on December 18th.
On motions from the Mission and Outreach committee, session ap-proved giving Northminster’s portion of the Peacemaking Offering (received Oct. 2nd) to On the Rise (a Clark County organization working with at risk youth; and two special Advent collections to be received on Dec 4th and 11th: gas cards for Project Woman and toilet paper for the Interfaith Hospitality Network.
The session met in a special called meeting during the retreat/workshop at the Bergamo Center on November 19th, 2011. The Finance Committee report was given by Chair Kent Sherry, refer-ring to the printed financial report and balance sheet: Total income for January 1 through October was $147,282 and total expenses were $166,982, producing a deficit of $19,700. The chair noted that receipt of pledges has fallen behind schedule and that the deficit continues to grow.
Session unanimously approved the 2012 proposed budget (which will be presented to the congregation at the January 29, 2012 annual meeting) and the Pastor’s terms of call for 2012.
Session unanimously elected Bill Harrison to another one-year term as church treasurer and Gay Steiner to continue as church financial secre-tary.
Session approved the purchase of a new or used two drawer fire-proof filing cabinet for the church office to safely store irreplaceable church records and documents.
The annual meeting of the congregation was set for January 29, 2012. All committees, groups, and individuals should have their reports for 2011 turned in to the office by January 9, 2012.
The next stated meeting of Session is January 17, 2012 at 7:00 PM.
Please continue to pray for the Pastor and Session as we try to serve this congregation and our Lord Jesus Christ.

HEALTH NEWS from the Parish Nurse . . Nancy Jean Graves
December 2011 CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE HOME
LOW LEVEL EXPOSURE - Symptoms: headaches, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, fatigue or dizziness. As you can see, these symptoms could be mistaken for food poisoning, a stomach virus, or another health concern. You may become suspicious that these symptoms are related to carbon monoxide if you feel better when you leave your home and get some fresh air. Exposure to carbon monoxide can be fatal at higher levels. CHRONIC CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING - If a person is exposed to low levels of carbon monoxide over a long period of time, they may experience symp-toms for a long period of time, even after the exposure has ended. This exposure may result in the following areas:
Memory and Attention: They may have trouble recalling recent events, concentrating, or finding the right words to express themselves. Physical: Headaches, nausea, vomiting, chronic fatigue, and the individual may complain of muscle and joint pain, tingling and dizziness. Vision and Balance: Blurred vision, difficulty keeping one’s balance, and buzzing in the ears may also be caused by exposure to carbon monoxide. Personality Changes: When a person feels irritable or anxious, they may not necessarily connect it to carbon monoxide poisoning, these symptoms have been linked to long-term exposure to the gas. HOW TO PREVENT CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING • Have your furnace inspected once a year.
• Buy a carbon monoxide detector and install it in your home. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test the unit on a regular basis to make sure it is working. • If you have a chimney, make sure that it is cleaned and inspected yearly. Twigs and bird nests can block off the flue and cause carbon monoxide to build up in your home. Submitted by: Jane Wildman, RN Parish Nurse—Northridge United Methodist
