MFL Subject Leaders’ Conference

Friday 9 December 20119.30am - 4.00pm

Venue: TBC£140

Course leader: Gill Ramage

As linguists, we know how much we value the opportunity to get together with other specialist subject leaders to share ideas, find out about good practice and investigate innovative approaches. This conference is designed to reinvigorate all those responsible for leading languages in middle, high and upper schools.

The focus will be on raising attainment and driving improvement, with vital updates on the national picture for MFL. This will include a session on effective lesson observation to improve learning. In the afternoon, there will be a choice of workshops to meet your needs.

As MFL takes its rightful place at the heart of the curriculum, effective leadership of the MFL team becomes increasingly crucial. We look forward to seeing you at the conference.

CoursesBuilding on prior attainment -

what and how to teach the ‘new’ Year 7

Wednesday 28 September 20112.00pm - 5.30pm

Venue: Northgate High School£70

Course leader: Gill Ramage

“Secondary schools should consider, as a matter of urgency, the implications of recent developments in primary languages for their curriculum in Year 7 and how they build on students’ prior attainment”.(OFSTED MFL Report, 2011)

Many secondary schools with pupils joining in Year 7 are grappling with how to build effectively on what the pupils have already learned in their Primary Languages lessons. The challenge increases with the number of primaries involved, the variety of languages learned and the variability of emphasis in past teaching.

We will be looking at what pupils learn in primary languages and how to work with your feeder primary schools. We will tackle how to work in the year 7 classroom so that all pupils are included, make good progress and attain their full potential.

‘Bacc’ to the future - Improving MFL uptake at

Key Stage 4Wednesday 2 November 2011

2.00pm - 5.30pmVenue: Northgate High School

£70Course leader: Gill Ramage

With the potentially increased status of MFL thanks to the proposed English Baccalaureate, MFL teams are once again focussing not just on increasing the number of pupils doing MFL in KS4, but also on ensuring that these pupils achieve an A*-C pass.

This afternoon course will look at two aspects: • Year 9 curriculum design focussed on success;• practical steps schools have taken to improve take up and outcomes in KS4.

Your school will be looking to you for leadership on MFL in the English Baccalaureate: this course will help you advocate some positive ways forward.

Competence, Confidence and Ambition - Improving

speaking outcomes in MFLFriday 27 January 2012

2.00pm - 5.30pmVenue: Northgate High School

£70Course leader: Gill Ramage

“Secondary schools should put much greater emphasis on regular use of the target language in all lessons...and broaden approaches to teaching and learning to enthuse students and increase their confidence, competence and ambition in modern languages.” (OFSTED MFL Report, 2011)

This afternoon, the focus will be on teaching speaking. How can we improve our pupils’ ability to speak spontaneously and to have meaningful exchanges? How can we get away from the pointless task of pupils learning screeds of notes for regurgitation in a controlled speaking assessment? We will investigate systems and techniques to build pupils’ confidence, competence and ambition in speaking through key stage 3 and beyond.

Keeping It Real: promoting engagement, motivation and intercultural understanding through authentic materials

Wednesday 21 March 20122.00pm - 5.30pm

Venue: Northgate High School£70

Course leader: Gill Ramage

“Secondary schools should make more use of authentic materials to help develop students’ language skills and their intercultural understanding.” (OFSTED MFL Report, 2011)

This afternoon does exactly what it says on the can. We will look at a range of authentic materials and work together on how these can be exploited to improve pupils’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as their intercultural understanding. The authentic materials will include texts, films and web-based materials.

Having built on a successful partnership with the local authority in developing a programme of professional development, Northgate continues to work towards sharing excellent practice in the teaching of modern languages.
