Psalm: Biblical Quotations:

"Love is Patient"

Love is patient, love is kind.

It does not envy, it does not boast,

it is not proud.

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,

it is not easily angered,

it keeps no record of wrongs.

Management

There have been some recent changes to our Management Team following the resignation of

Mr. Rob Shearman who was our Director of Nursing for the past two years. We wish Rob and

his family all the best for the future.

Mr. Terry Atfeild, Facility Manager at Mountain View Lodge has assumed the role of Acting

Director of Nursing. Terry has relocated to Abernethy Nursing Home and will be working from

the Director of Nursing’s office. Terry can be contacted on (02) 4993 3103 or 0449 988 633.

Mr Graeme Andrews, Quality Coordinator has assumed the role of Acting Facility Manager at

Mountain View Lodge and has relocated to Mountain View Lodge and can be contacted on (02)

4993 3003.

Quality improvement matters can still be directed to the Quality Department by speaking with

Mr Alan Baird or Wanda Oake, (02) 4993 3129.

The Main Kitchen at Abernethy Home is nearing completion with an anticipated opening date

of July 2017. We thank you for your patience during this refurbishment.

The Australian Aged Care Quality Agency provided two education sessions for our staff last

month to help facilitate the journey of reaccreditation. The Quality Agency also advised that

during the next round of Reaccreditation which will occur in 2018, Consumer Experience

Reports will be attended to complement the existing audit structure. The Consumer Experience

Report covers aspects of the quality of care and services that are important to consumers and

aligned with the expected outcomes of the Residential Aged Care Accreditation Standards.

The RedsiDENTAL dentists and oral hygienists will be onsite the 1st June to perform oral health

assessments and treatment at our Homes for those care recipients that have completed the

appropriate paper work. If you would like to see the dentist please speak with a member of staff

or your Home Manager who will be able to arrange a consent and an appointment on

ResiDENTAL’s next visit.

International Volunteer’s Day was celebrated at Cessnock Ex-service Club

with a lovely all you can eat meal to thank all our wonderful volunteers

who give their time freely. The lunch was enjoyed by all who attended.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to NCCCA.

A big thank you to staff, family and friends who supported our Entertainment Book Fund

raiser this year at NCCCA very much appreciated. Proceeds will help toward resident

activities.

Abernethy News for the Month

Terrarium Building and Gardening

Staff from Bunnings, Cessnock, came to visit and provided the residents with a potting

display and the residents made their very own plant terrariums. The residents let their

green thumbs and creativity shine whilst choosing what plant, coloured rocks and sand

they wanted in their terrarium. The best part was residents got to keep terrarium as gifts

from Bunnings.

Bunnings will be back again this month on the 19th of June with an exciting new project.

Some keen care recipients are enjoying their gardening immensely and John especially has

his own sanctuary which is admired by everyone. John enjoys picking his flourishing

flowers and placing them around the dining area for all to admire. We all thank you John

as you bring so much pleasure into our home which reminds us to appreciate the little

things.

Volunteers are helping taking residents outside to Aldi for their shopping and it’s good to

see some males coming to our Pamper Mornings.

Magnolia residents are enjoying their project on making sun catchers for the glass

windows and their new garden which they admire and water each day.

LAUGHTER

Laughter is an intrinsic part of life. It happens spontaneously and unconsciously. Whether

you’re howling with laughter or giggling quietly, laughter does you good.

Laughter is known to be a powerful antidote to stress. However the benefits of laughter

extend far beyond making you feel happier in the moment.

Sometimes Laughter is the Best Medicine

Laughing doesn't just lighten your load mentally, it actually induces physical changes in your

body. Laughter has been clinically proven to strengthen your immune system, activate and

relieve your stress response and stimulate many organs.

A good sense of humor cannot cure all ailments, but there is mounting data about all the

positive things laughter can do. It's also contagious and free!

A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

10

June in Australia

June in Australia is the first month of the Australian winter. But except at high altitudes

where you can expect snow, the temperature is not as harsh as you might imagine winter

would be.

And if you're thinking of far north Australia, the temperature in the northern cities of

Darwin in the Northern Territory, ranging from the 20°C (68°F) to the low 30°C (86°F),

and Cairns in Queensland, about 17°C (63°F) to the mid-20°C (mid-68°F) would remain

fairly tropical.

In Alice Springs in Australia's Red Centre, it will be warm in the daytime, just below 20°C

(68°F) on average, and cold at night, an average of around 5°C (41°F).

Expect an average range of 8°C (46°F) to 16°C (61°F) in Sydney and a few degrees cooler

in Melbourne

.

Start of the ski season

The Queen's Birthday holiday weekend is generally taken as the

official start of the ski season.

The major ski resorts are in the Snowy Mountains in New South

Wales and in the high country of Victoria, but don't

discount Tasmania; you can ski there, too.

Blue Mountains festival

For those who miss having Christmas in the northern winter — Australia's Christmas is in

the southern summer — there's Yulefest in the Blue Mountains when they transpose the

trappings of a cold December Christmas into the months of June, July and August.

There'll be roaring log fires, wreaths of holly, carols, Santa Claus, hot roast dinners and

who knows but that there might even be snow.

Snow on Mount Sugarloaf

Snow comes to Mount Sugarloaf

The weather forecast for Sunday, July 18, 1965, did not mention the possibility of snow

falling a few kilometres from Newcastle Post Office.

Snowfalls in the Hunter region are usually confined to Barrington Tops and parts of the

Upper Hunter.

On that Sunday morning snow not only fell on

Mount Sugarloaf but also in some Newcastle and

Lake Macquarie suburbs. By sunrise the slopes of

Sugarloaf were covered with about 10cm of snow

and more than 16cm lay on the hills around

Maitland, Cessnock, Singleton, Muswellbrook,

Denman, Scone, Aberdeen and Barrington Tops.

Near Cessnock the snow also fell at Mount View,

Millfield and Quorrobolong. Snow was also

reported at New Lambton, Waratah and Windale.

As can be seen, on Mount Sugarloaf children built

snowmen and had snow fights. As the news of the

snowfall spread hundreds of sightseers made their

way up the mountain. By mid-morning the police

had to close the road to the summit because of the

traffic.

With the snowfalls came strong wind and rain

which was welcomed by the Hunter's farmers and

graziers, who hoped it would herald the end of a

drought that had lasted for 16 months.

Snow again fell on Mount Sugarloaf on Thursday,

June 12, 1975.
