i think i hear the school bell ringing and with that all too familiar sound comes lunch making, extra curricular activities, home-work and the hardest job a parent has to do, which is encouraging and guiding their child through another school year.

Like everyone else, children are all indi-viduals; there are kids like my daughter who love school with a capital L, there are kids like my son who are extremely brilliant but just the thought of going to school makes them weep inside. how oh how do you con-vince your children that working hard now and taking an active part in what could be viewed as the most important period in life is something that is worth it for them to do?

child’s life. no one child is perfect, they all have their ups and downs but through creative thinking, love and guidance we can help shape them for a bright and wonderful future. Find your child’s “earring”, it could make a big difference on the path they choose to go down.

as the school bells start ring-ing this week, take a little extra time out of your already loaded schedule and make sure you are playing an active part in your child’s education. if they don’t already thank you now, watching them ten or 0 years down the road may be all the thanks you will ever need. oh yeah, their teachers will also thank you!

McLeod opposes costly motioncathy McLeod, Member of parliament

for Kamloops Thompson cariboo says that she will not be supporting private Member’s Motion M -141 recently intro-duced by ndp deputy Leader Libby davies. M-141 calls on the govern-ment to eliminate the 10-year residency requirement, based on an applicant’s country of origin, for canadian citizens

to qualify for old age security benefits. “This same type of private Member’s bill was introduced in the last parliament by Liberal Mp ruby dhalla. i received thousands of letters, emails and calls of protest against that bill and want to reas-sure my constituents that i am certainly opposed to this proposed legislation,” said McLeod.

when it comes to quilting and everything that is involved with the process there is one store here on the north shore that has everything you need and much, much more. That store, which is aptly named heather’s Fabric shelf, is the Mec-ca of all things quilt related. inside the doors you will find happy, smil-ing friendly people who are al-ways laughing, telling jokes and of course quilting. heather Fager-vik originally opened the shelf as a way to share her love of quilting and since that time it has evolved into a busy, social haven for quil-ters of all kinds. There is always something happening; new sam-ples, new fabrics, plenty of classes, chitchat, and quilting camaraderie.

“we have lots of new things hap-pening in the shop this fall,” tells heather. “My husband bill is now working from the shop fixing sew-ing machines and we have many new classes starting soon. we also have a sampler quilt project that is starting september 10.”

The sampler quilt project is very cool. For a mere $15 heather will give you the first two blocks of the quilt. as long as you show up back at the store within two weeks with the blocks completed she will give you two more. Keep going and stay on track and you will get all 1 complete blocks for the original price.“Bill can fix any type of sew-ing machine,” she continues. “his motto for cleaning and fixing is if you are going to do it, do it right! he washes all moving parts so that

all of the old oil is removed, be-cause really, who wants old oil on their treadle! all of our classes are also filling up fast. We have some new and exciting ones with new teachers as well as all your old fa-vourites. we will be doing every-thing from table runners and full size quilts to wall hangings for be-ginners and intermediates. stop by the store to find out more.”

heather’s Fabric shelf is con-veniently located at #4-685 Tran-quille road in Library square. They even have their own reserved parking for easy access to all those fat quarters and notions. check out their new Facebook page and look for them online soon at www.fab-ricshelf.ca. you can reach them at the store at 50-376-7630.

Kiwi singer hits townnew Zealand based singer

songwriter Fleur Jack is touring north america this september and october and will touch down on september 9 in Kamloops to play pogue Mahones at 843 desmond street.

Fleur has previously played music in canada, hong Kong, australia and all over new Zealand, but this is the first trip to introduce canadian and american audiences to songs from her debut album “ghosts of cimarron.”

Much of the music on Fleur’s debut album was inspired by a trip last year to visit fam-ily in a small colorado town Trinidad which borders new Mexico. Fleur will be playing music in the towns that inspired the album including the famous-ly haunted st. James hotel in cimarron new Mexico.

Fleur’s song ‘not My Fault’ has recently been featured on a compilation called ‘we will rise again’ alongside Lionel ritchie.

You can sing with the Phantom international musicals star peter

Karrie, bc’s very own welsh, ‘phantom of the opera’ returns from the uK to bc this september to perform four theatrical concerts in the okanagan Valley, with a Kamloops show at the sagebrush Theatre on september 13.

his performances as ‘The phantom’ have long been acclaimed the world over. when performing in Vancouver cbc radio said, “peter Karrie is fantas-tic! a truly thrilling performance.” The review in the Vancouver sun newspaper said, “Karrie’s incred-ible multi-layered portrayal is the lifeblood of this production... it is Karrie’s soul-wrenching take that gives the music its raison d’etre.”

in addition to phantom, Mr. Karrie’s voice has been featured in many of the major successes of contemporary musical theatre history such as “Les Miserables”, “Jesus christ superstar”, “chess” and “evita”.

This september Mr. Karrie will be performing a different type of role to that of ‘The phantom’ he will be performing the role of an ambassador for youth in theatre.

because it is a cause that he feels very passionate about, he is tour-ing and performing these local communities concert and inviting young local artiste to join with him on stage. he will be performing many of his most famous theatrical roles, whilst also featuring many local performers in such triumphs as ‘Lion King, ‘Les Miserables’ ‘Man of La Mancha‘, ‘Miss saigon‘, and of course a whole lot of music from his favourite musi-cal ‘phantom of the opera.’

Making dreams come true is part of what these concert tours is about. at the moment, Mr. Karrie is looking for a “christine” for the Kamloops concert. The opportunity is open to anyone who can sing within a soprano range. This can be an opportunity for someone’s voice to be heard who just never had the chance to display their talents onstage before. anyone wishing to have a chance in the role may contact cheryl at [email protected]. youth groups and adult choir members who would like some stage time with Mr. Karrie may also be accepted.

as a new school principal, Mr. Mitchell was checking over his school on the first day. passing the stockroom, he was startled to see the door wide open and teachers bustling in and out, car-rying off books and supplies in preparation for the arrival of stu-dents the next day.

The school where he had been a principal the previous year had

used a check out system only slightly less elaborate than that at Fort Knox. cautiously, he asked the school’s long time custodian, “do you think it’s wise to keep the stock room unlocked and to let the teachers take things with-out requisitions?”

The custodian looked at him gravely... “we trust them with the children, don’t we?”

when you next read an aca-demic paper, make sure you have this handy guide by your side.

1. “Three of the samples were chosen for detailed study”... The other results didn’t make any sense.

. “Typical results are shown”... This is the prettiest graph.

3. “These results will be in a subsequent report”... i might get around to this sometime, if pushed/funded.

4. “in my experience”... once. 5. “in case after case”... Twice. 6. “in a series of cases”...

Thrice. 7. “it is believed that”... i

think. 8. “it is generally believed

that”... a couple of others think so, too.

9. “correct within an order of magnitude”... wrong. wrong.

wrong. 10. “according to statistical

analysis”... rumour has it. 11. “a statistically-oriented

projection of the significance of these findings”... a really wild guess.

1. “a careful analysis of obtainable data”... Three pages of notes were obliterated when i knocked over a beer glass.

13. “it is clear that much addi-tional work will be required before a complete understanding of this phenomenon occurs”... i don’t understand it, and i never will.

14. “after additional study by my colleagues”... They don’t understand it either.

15. “a highly significant area for exploratory study”... a total-ly useless topic selected by my committee.

How logical is English?

Mr. cikoch was a biology instructor at a snobby suburban girl’s junior college. during class one day he asked his student, “Miss simison, would you please name the organ of the human body, which under the appropri-ate conditions, expands to six times its normal size, and define the conditions.”

Miss simison gasped, and then said, “Mr. cikoch, i don’t think that is a proper question to ask me. i assure you my parents will

hear of this.”with that she sat down red-

faced. Mr. cikoch then called on Miss hakar and asked the same question. Miss hakar, with com-posure, replied, “The pupil of the eye, in dim light.”

“correct,” said Mr. cikoch. “and now, Miss simison, i have three things to say to you. one, you have not studied your lesson. Two, you have a dirty mind. and three, you will some day be faced with a dreadful disappointment.”
