as a Community in bloom award winner, Kamloops works hard to maintain its nationally recognized status as a beauti-ful community, and the City of Kamloops wants the public to know that graffiti vandalism is a serious offence.” Vandalism of any kind is unacceptable. our message is that tagging property will not go unnoticed. by-law enforcement of these acts will be undertaken, charges will be

laid,” states Len hrycan, com-munity and corporate affairs director. “The City of Kamloops is a beautiful community receiv-ing numerous awards. it is unac-ceptable that the work of a few taggers could negatively impact our image.”

recently, the City of Kamloops Community safety and enforcement staff, Community safety volunteers and graffiti Task Force members completed

a six-hour graffiti removal blitz across the city resulting in the removal of over 175 tags. The

City announces that increased efforts around graffiti enforce-ment and removal will continue.

United Way backs housing initiatives for local groupsThe united way board of

directors has granted an extra $100,000 this year to support two local organizations working to help move people “from poverty to possibility”. These funds come at a time when year Two of the homelessness action plan is plan-ning for new shelter/housing facil-ities to meet the needs of people in Kamloops. The City of Kamloops

is providing four sites for social housing and other partners and organizations are working to pull projects together, all part of the homelessness action plan.

Canadian Mental health association is the managing part-ner for the new emerald Centre shelter on west Victoria street and united way is able to pro-vide $50,000 for the sophisticated

security system they require. The new shelter will support men and women, as well as children if necessary.

The elizabeth Fry society plans

to build supportive housing for women and children, and united way has granted them $50,000 in capacity funding to develop their business plan.

Moats enters municipal electionafter leading a successful hsT

campaign in Kamloops, Chad Moats wants to make tracks for City hall. in the wake of the suc-cessful hsT initiative and the out-pouring of support for the Lorne street parkade counter-petition, Chad has decided to “throw his hat

in the ring” for this november’s municipal election. Chad believes Kamloops needs representatives at City hall who stand up for the regular citizens’ views and opinions, not just special interests. Chad believes, “ you shouldn’t have to fight City hall.”

FIREFIGHTER RUNS FOR COUNCILAndrew Philpot, assistant chief (retired) Kamloops Fire Rescue is running as a council candidate for the November municipal election. In January 1981 he started his career as a firefighter with the Kamloops Fire Department. By July 2008 he had become one of the department’s two Operations Chiefs. In January 2011 after 30 years of service Chief Philpot retired from Kamloops Fire Rescue. Andy has been awarded the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal, the Province of BC Long Service Medal, The Service Medal of the Order of St John, and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. In 2010 he was presented with the City of Kamloops Senior Managers Award of Excellence for Outstanding Community service. During his career, Andy Philpot was actively involved with the many charity events hosted by the Kamloops firefighters, including Operation Africa and Operation Nicaragua, the missions to fill a shipping container with donated items for a remote village in each of those countries.

New date for parks meeting

The City of Kamloops parks, recreation, and Cultural services department invites residents to attend a public meeting to ini-tiate the process of establish-ing a Kamloops natural areas advisory Committee. The com-mittee will contribute to the direc-tion of future management of the City’s natural parks, including areas such as petersen Creek park and Kenna Cartwright park, and will advise on the updating of nature park management plans. This meeting, which was original-ly scheduled for october 19, has been rescheduled and will take place on november 30 at 7:00 pm at the parkside Lounge at interior savings Centre. For more infor-mation please contact the City of Kamloops at 250-828-3551.

Web cam for driver safetya new web camera in

Kamloops is now live on the province’s drivebC website, providing real-time coverage of highway conditions in the area and helping motorists plan a safe journey. The web camera is located at hwy 1 at peterson Creek bridge in Kamloops, looking west: http://images.drivebc.ca/bchighwaycam/pub/html/www/239.html.

priority for new drivebC web cameras is given to routes prone

to extreme weather or traffic congestion, and for sites where there is not already a nearby webcam. rapidly changing weather conditions make this a prime location for a web-cam. Commuters and tourists will now have access to current road condition updates, travel advisories, road closure infor-mation for provincial highways, and weather information with a click of a button to the travelling public.

WARRIORS LIFT SPIRITS OF CANCER PATIENTS

The Spirit Warriors dragon boat team in Kamloops consists of breast cancer survivors who get together and support each other and at the same time enjoy paddling and even racing. Now in its fourth year, the team regularly participates in festivals and races. Earlier this year the team hosted a comedy show called the ‘Boob Tour,’ to raise money for upcoming festivals and to help with team expenses. Community support was such that in addition the team was able to donate $2,000 to the Royal Inland Hospital Auxiliary’s hat, scarf and wig loan program based in the Cancer clinic. Pictured here (L-R) are Kamloops Spirit Warriers Joan Eley and Lisa Somogyi, Afternoon Auxiliary President Trucy DeLuca, Spirit Warrier Midge King, RIH Cancer Clinic Coordinator Janice McDonald, and Spirit Warrier Alison Bepple.

FLIGHT ATTENdANTS vS. HOCkEy PLAyERS

TRU has 25 flight attendant students from J.F.Oberlin University in Japan studying English Language studies, tourism and cultural studies for a customized four-month program. As part of their cultural studies they recently were invited to the McArthur Park Sports Center to meet the Kamloops Storm and participate in a short game of road hockey. The girls got to watch a Storm practice and attend a regular season game.

Hunt for hidden treasure at McArthur IslandThe Mcarthur island Treasure hunt (MiTh) is a new

series of 15 geocaches located at Mcarthur island park that create a geocaching training playground for new geocachers.

The Mcarthur island Treasure hunt officially launch-es on october 29 at 10:00 am at norbrock stadium. residents are invited to come try geocaching at this family-friendly event. gps units will be supplied, and a volunteer will help you learn how to use them. access to gps units and registration begin at 9:00 am. bring your curiosity, bring your family, and bring your sense of adventure!

geocaching is a global game of hide and seek, where people hide ‘caches’ and post clues and gps coordinates at www.geocaching.com. The name of the game is hunt-ing for treasure, which may be a trinket or even just the pleasure of a beautiful view, a chance to learn some his-tory, or just explore! it’s a family-friendly activity that gets people outside and learning about the world around

them, and it can be as challenging or as easy as cachers want it to be. all that is needed to geocache is a handheld gps unit or smart phone with geocaching app, a small treasure to trade (optional), and a sense of adventure.

with the full support of the City of Kamloops, a group of local geocaching volunteers, the MiTh-cachers, have established Mcarthur island as a geocaching training ground. This is a place where new and experienced geocachers can find a large number of geocaches in a relatively small area. These caches will include a variety of cache types and difficulty levels. Caches in this series all are safe, family-friendly, and some are wheelchair accessible. all caches promote the highest standards of geocaching etiquette by encouraging cachers to practice low impact caching, respect other park users, and trade responsibly. For more information on geocaching, visit the main geocaching website at: www.geocaching.com or watch this pbs geocaching documentary at: vimeo.com/25656713.

Cavers explains Ajax Mine positionTo the Editor:i wish to reply to an october 19 Kamloops daily

news letter. it criticized my refusal to meet privately with Ceos of the proposed ajax mine.

For clarification, here is my personal opinion on the ajax mine:

i am in favour of a federal independent panel review (the highest level of environmental assessment avail-able in Canada in terms of public consultation and scientific scrutiny).

with regard to the writer’s accusation of my “meet-ing privately with ruth Madsen’s group.” is he refer-ring to the Kamloops area preservation association or Kapa? if so, Kapa has been hosting open, public

meetings at duffy’s pub every second wednesday. occasionally the occasional person incorrectly assumes that i am somehow entrenched with that association. i have actually only been able to attend one of the many public meetings Kapa has hosted over the past several months.

i am open to any public meeting with any person or group. i invite anyone to call me anytime at my phone number 250-852-2264

as a City Council candidate, i declined a “one-on-one” meeting with ajax. i offered instead to meet with the company at a public all candidates forum on the project – an offer the company Ceos rejected.

Donovan Cavers, City Council candidate

DYC - 1.8 Biggest Sale Oct2011.i1 1 10/21/11 12:46:40 PM

The North Shore Business Im-provement Association has been working with their marketing committee along with many part-ners to bring you the Biggest Sale Kamloops Has Ever Seen!

On Saturday, October 29 from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm, over 50 participating merchants from Brocklehurst and North Kamloops will be hosting this event. All of the participating businesses are featur-ing sale items and all are contribut-ing something, a product, a service or a gift certificate into a large ‘gift basket’ with an accumulated value of over $1,500. Entry into the draw is by bal-lot at any of the participating stores. The gift basket is on display in Nor-thills Centre and the actual draw will take place on Mon-day, October 31 at the Centre.

In addition to the sale itself is a series of fam-ily fun activi-ties including a Strongman dem-onstration in the Fortune Shopping Centre parking lot and a free Kids Carnival at Fun Factor Gaming Centre. Don't miss the set of inflat-able toys such as a bouncy castle, an inflatable slide and a gladiator joust all set up on their lot at the corner of Tranquille Road and 9th Avenue.

Interior Crafts will be exercising their radio controlled (RC) scale trucks and rock crawlers at their demonstration track at the rear of their lot, while Big Don’s Pawn

Shop will be providing free hot dogs and drinks as well as offering a 10 per cent discount to anyone wearing a Halloween costume. They are also having a free raffle.

And, while you have your cos-tume on, head over to Penny Pinchers to compete in their four multi-age categories for a first, second or third prise. Everyone from tots to grandparents can im-press or scare the daylights out of their ghoulish recruiting team.

Several beauty salons are provid-ing savings, such as Enigma in the Fortune Centre. They are offering

a No HST Day. Headhunters in Northills Cen-tre is offering $10 off perms.

An activ-ity for the big kids is at Caffé Motivo where you can sit with some of the candidates in the upcoming city election to meet, greet and share your views on civic

affairs. It is an informal chance for both voters and candidates to learn something.

Both Paws and Tails along with Animal House are donating a portion of their proceeds on the Biggest Sale day to the Humane Society.

if you haven’t been to your friendly neighbourhood pub late-ly then you are in for a big sur-prise. i am talking about the mas-sive renovations that have taken place at the brock Centre pub which is located right here on the north shore in the brock shop-ping Centre.

“we have renovated to make more room for the growing liquor store,” explains Joan sivyer of the brock Centre pub. “we have more than doubled the size of our walk in beer cooler which has meant that we have been able to add more variety to our beer and cooler selection. we have quadru-pled the brands of coolers and ci-ders we carry and added more siz-es, flavours and microbreweries to our selection of beer. we have also brought in some great tasting non-alcoholic wine varieties.”

attached to the liquor store is the pub, which has been a staple here in brocklehurst for more than a decade. it has also gone through a series of renovations that saw the bar area itself move to the front of the house where you will get plenty of sunshine. it is the place where everyone knows your name. The pub is open daily and it is the place where you go when you want to kick back with good friends. The friendly staff are there to make sure you feel welcome.

“we are still your neighbour-hood watering hole,” says Joan. “at the brock Centre pub we aim to keep our prices low and create a friendly atmosphere. you can still enjoy the lowest draft prices in town, Free pizza Fridays, and Ka-raoke wednesdays and saturdays. we also have lots of free parking (overnight if necessary) and pull-up parking for our Liquor store.”

gary bigham and Joan along with their staff are so proud of the new changes that they want to invite everyone out from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on saturday, october 29 to attend their renovation grand opening, which will take place during the north shore’s biggest sale event.

“in conjunction with the big sale we will be throwing a party,” she continues. “we will have tast-ings, draws for different things and lots and lots of giveaways. you can also enter the draw to win the grand prize basket that will

be given away to a lucky north shore biggest sale customer.

Make sure you make a point of stopping at the brock Cen-tre pub and Liquor store dur-ing the north shore’s biggest sale. The brock Centre pub is located at 1-1800 Tranquille rd in the brock shopping Centre. The hours of operation are 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with extended hours to 11:00 p.m. on wednes-days, Fridays and saturdays. Li-quor store is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
