Artwalk has been such a wonder-ful and longstanding event here in the Kamloops community. The event which started downtown and eventu-ally found its way to the North Shore as well matches local artists with local businesses and provides us – the citi-zens of Kamloops a reason to go for a stroll and check out what is going on in our neighbourhood.

“Artwalk is a really neat opportunity to get artists and businesses talking,” explains Kamloops Arts Council gen-eral manager Kathy Sinclair who is embarking on coordinating her first North Shore Artwalk since joining the arts council. “You often find some really unconventional matchups that really work well together.”

Such a matchup happened down-town just this spring. An artist dis-played her hand painted stepping-stones at a shoe store. She had to replenish them three or four times because they kept selling out. When the Downtown Artwalk ended, this business partnership continued.

“Those kind of partnerships don’t always happen, but they are really exciting when they do,” adds Kathy.

Get on the ice this summerCool off this summer! The City of Kamloops has

announced extra ice time made available for Teen Drop-in Hockey in August. With the success of the popular pilot program this past spring the City has opened extra ice time at Brock Arena. Full gear is required for all Drop-in Hockey programs, and Goalies play for free.

With fall right around the corner the City is offering a Special Pre-Season Practice Session for Adult Drop-in Hockey on Tuesday, August 7 from 1:15 to 3:15 pm at Brock Arena.

The next free Tim Hortons family skate is: Saturday, August 18 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Brock Arena.Skating has great aerobic and cardiovascular ben-

efits but does not have the joint impact that other activities such as running or jogging have. Skating also tones muscles, promotes weight loss, increases mental control such as alertness and is terrific for building self-esteem and confidence. Know before you skate. To view the current 2012

summer schedule visit www.kamloops.ca/arenas.

In 1812, fur trader and explorer David Stuart built a trading post on the shore of the Thompson River. 2012 commemorates Kamloops’ 200th year of shared living with the Tk’emlúps, and 200 years of community achievement and growth.

The City of Kamloops, the Kamloops Museum and Archives and the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc are excited to start counting down to the 2012 Bicentennial event taking place on August 25 at Riverside Park.

The day’s festivities will start at 9:00am at Riverside Park with a pancake breakfast provided by the Paddlewheelers Lions Club. Following the breakfast, festivities and activ-ities will commence at 10:00am and continue throughout the day until 4:00pm. Attractions include local artisan displays, multicultural and educational booths, performers, face painting and more! Re-enactors will have a traditional encampment set up as part of the tribute to our shared 200 years of his-tory. There will be multiple food booths and refreshments available.

At approximately 1:00pm, Mayor Peter Milobar will arrive by canoe on the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc lands for a ceremonial meet-ing with Chief Shane Gottfriedson, which will be broadcast at Riverside Park as part of a program produced by CFJC TV. The Mayor and Chief will then travel together in a voyageur canoe, accompanied by members of both councils, down the South Thompson River to Riverside Park. once arriving at the park at approximately 2:00 pm, there will

be another ceremony, complete with drum-mers, dancers, a ceremonial tree planting and unveiling of the 2012 Commemorative Plaque.

This family-friendly event promises to be the highlight of the summer, so be sure to bring out the whole family to take in the multitude of activities.

The Kamloops Museum and Archives is compiling artwork and essays by Kamloops youth to be published in a new book titled “A Children’s History of Kamloops” in commemoration of Kamloops’ Bicentennial.

The Museum is currently look-ing for youth under 18 to apply their chosen topic to be included in this publication. Local history topics include, but not limited to: the establishment of the fur

trade in Kamloops; or the lives and importance of John Fremont-Smith or Chief Nicola; or a story about your very own family’s link to Kamloops his-tory. Submissions can be of any size, using paint, wax crayon or felt mark-ers, with a 100 to 500 word written description and/or

essay accompanying the artwork on their chosen, approved topic.

Interested participants

need to contact the Museum educator at 250-828-3493 prior to choosing a topic to avoid duplica-tion or redundancy. Possible sub-mission topics need to be in by August 8. Approved topics will be due by August 17. only pre-approved topics will be included in the book. Selected entries will be published in a Bicentennial children’s book coming out this fall. Visit www.kamloops.ca/museum for more details.

on Thursday, August 16, Gardengate will celebrate 13 years of “Growing Food, Growing Futures” during its Ninth Annual Summer Salsa Challenge! Past and present partici-pants, volunteers and staff will be joined by local community service pro-viders and Kamloops resi-dents to celebrate over a decade of hard work and friendship.

From 12:30 to 3:00pm, Gardengate welcomes everyone to drop-in and sample salsas from over 12 community teams and cast their vote for the People’s Choice and Team Spirit awards. There will be plenty more fun to be had including yoga ses-sions, garden tours, live entertainment and plenty of opportunities to catch up with old and new friends.

Gardengate was formed in 1999 to address two issues: food security and opportunities for persons with mental health issues. It is managed by open Door Group in co-oper-ation with the Kamloops Food Policy Council. With support from local businesses, volunteers, and the Interior Health Authority, the Gardengate

site was established in Brocklehurst, and pro-gramming began in 2001. Its mission is “growing food and futures through diverse and supportive programs for persons with disabilities while contrib-uting to the health and wellness of our commu-nity.” In order to fulfill its mission of contributing to the health of the com-munity, Gardengate has donated over 180,000lbs

of organic produce to local charities in the past 13 years.

Gardengate is located at 915 Southill, beside overlander extended Care Hospital.

For more information on the Summer Salsa Challenge please contact Matthew Klassen, event Coordinator, at 250-554-9453 or email [email protected].

Tourism Kamloops is reporting a four percent increase in 2012 accommoda-tion tax revenues for the months of January through April over 2011 num-bers for the same period.

“These numbers are in line with fore-casts set for 2012.” says Lee Morris,

Ceo. “With robust targeted family leisure marketing campaigns into the BC market and the continuation of diverse sporting events being hosted in Kamloops, there is considerable opti-mism that the forecast revenues for 2012 will be achieved.”`

eight students were chosen to receive 2012 scholarship awards from the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (KYSA). The winners and the scholarship sponsors are:

errol Wild Memorial Scholarship – Danielle Devente (Westsyde Secondary).

McDonald’s Scholarship – Daniel Chadwick (Kamloops Christian School).

Rona Scholarship – erin Marchio (North Kamloops Secondary).

Wendy’s Scholarship – Daylin epp (Sa-Hali Secondary).

Hansport (Male) – Scott Bjorkland (Valleyview Secondary).

Hansport (Female) – Maggie McLeod (Valleyview Secondary).

KYSA (Male) – erik olson (Valleyview Secondary).

KYSA (Female) – Kierstin Landrie (South Kamloops Secondary).

each one-time award is in the

amount of $500. This is the most awards the KYSA and its sponsors have offered in a single year.

“once again the association received more applications than we had awards and some tough deci-sions had to be made. The quality of the candidates just gets better and better year after year,” says KYSA President and Scholarship Selection Committee chair, Graham Cope.

“We feel we have acknowledged some pretty outstanding student soc-cer players once again this year,” adds Cope. “The majority of our award recipients are heading to Thompson-Rivers University, which

bodes well for their soccer program. But there are also a number of other post-secondary institutes at which our 2012 award winners will be studying. They’ll be the benefactors of some great student athletes, too!”

Award recipients are selected using a number of criteria, which extends beyond their playing ability. Such bench marks include an applicant’s scholastic achievements, involve-ment in community activities, vol-unteer work, assisting with school projects and their contributions back to the game as coaches, game offi-cials or helping run KYSA events and programs.

Lately, the bulk of his work are creatures that come to fruition through the assemblage of hacked up toys being arranged, and rearranged, to form new species. these creatures evolve to be either realistic, absurd, or a bit of both.

linda MCrae (6)Linda's photography is on display at the office of Terry Lake (MLA), 618B Tranquille Rd.

While working behind the lens, Linda can become so absorbed in the process that she loses all awareness of time, her environment, and the people around her. When she captures an image that really works, she feels a kind of "click" deep inside her core. She describes it as "...click goes the shutter, click goes my soul."

NORTH SHORE ARTWALK

Page 9: North Shore Echo, August 1, 2012

NoRTH SHoRe eCHo August 1, 2012 n 9 Business profile

More than one generation of budding hobbyists has gotten their start in an aisle at North Ka-mloops’ Interior Crafts store. The store, which has been in the cur-rent location for more than 20 years, was started 15 years prior to that by David and Carol Hicks.

They originally started by sell-ing ceramics and ceramics classes and throughout the years shifted their focus from ceramics to mod-el railway to RC cars. Now op-erated mostly by David and Car-ols two sons, Darren and Dean, fast forward to present day and you will find a store, which fills a number of niche markets.

“our cars and planes are ex-tremely popular,” explains Dean, of the big selection of RC vehicles Interior Crafts has in stock. “If it goes fast, its fun!”

Those vehicles include a variety of different types including heli-copters, cars, trucks, planes and more. They have T-MAXX, rep-lica Gravediggers, rock crawlers and more. They have everything to make little boys interested and young at heart boys drool.

Still faithful to their hobbyists, Interior Crafts also of course car-

ries all your railroading supplies, models, and related supplies. They also have an interesting col-lection of science kits, toys, wa-ter guns, Thomas the Train pieces and estes rockets.

“It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced hobbyist or some-one who is just getting started, we have all the supplies and kits you need or are looking for,” continues Dean. “We have the best selection of anywhere around. We are happy to answer all your questions and help find what you need.”

Situated at 333 Tranquille Road,

Interior Crafts is hard to miss. The white building that housed the popular craft store received one of the first North Shore Business Improvement Association make-overs and now is one of the most noticeable buildings on the strip. Bright blue with a giant train run-ning up the front, the paint job is fitting as Interior Crafts is defi-nitely the right stop for those who are looking for hobby supplies and projects. Check out Interior Crafts online at interiorcrafts.net or reach them by phone at 250-376-2052.

LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Try not to discuss important matters with col-leagues. Go with the flow and don’t be concerned about your own job. You can open up to your mate and let them know what you expect out of this relationship. Partners may try to argue with you; however, you must stand your ground.VIRGO (Aug 23-Sept 23) Too much too fast will be the attitude sur-rounding your home environment. There is not much you can do to allevi-ate the problem, but consider putting some extra work into your house. Make sure that you take time to remember those you love.LIBRA (Sept 24-oct 23) Abrupt changes in your home may send you for a loop. Mingle with those who can further your goals. Get involved in groups and organizations that are of a distinguished nature. Don’t be afraid to speak in defense of others.SCORPIO (oct 24-Nov 22) Resist any idle chatter. Try to include friends and relatives in your activities. Don’t try to deal with important issues or make changes that will upset the apple cart. Get involved in groups and organizations that are of a distinguished nature.SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Look into ways that you can make extra cash. Put your energy into learning new skills or picking up valuable information. Finish those changes you’ve been talking about making to your residence. Problems on the home front might be a little disconcerting.CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) You have the stamina and determination to succeed. Family outings that aren’t expensive will be enjoyable and help strengthen ties. You will be able to talk about emotional problems with your partner. old friends may not like your choices.AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Real estate should be lucrative for you. You may find that your quick wit and charm will help you in obtaining al-lies. Groups you belong to will not only enjoy your company, but they will also share your interests. Contracts will not be as lucrative as you think.PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Keep on your toes when dealing with others. Your emotional partner will push all the right buttons this week. Don’t play on your partner’s emotions. New emotional connections can be made through business contacts.ARIES (Mar 21-April 20) Use your intellectual approach to get the best results. Take a trip or just spend some quality time with your mate. Abrupt changes in your home may send you for a loop. It might be time to shake a leg and do a personal makeover.TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Don’t overspend on children or on large pur-chases. You can prosper if you in vest in property or mutual funds. You will have problems with coworkers if you are too extreme about doing things perfectly. Think about your priorities. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Plans to make physical improvements may lead to psychological changes, too. This is not the best day to visit rela-tives who get on your nerves. You should get out and meet new people this week.CANCER (June 22-July 22) Don’t trust others with private in formation that could be used against you. Your lover may be annoyed if you have been flirtatious or not attentive to their needs. Don’t exaggerate.
