Page 3 MAY 2017

I often think back to when I was the Coordinator of the HUC-JIR SoupKitchen in lower Manhattan, a program that has provided food, clothing, and toiletries to those in need since the early 1980s. Our guestsfiled in every Monday evening. Some came in suits: they were nothomeless, just underemployed. Many carried all of their worldlypossessions, and everyone had a survival story. I remember when BigPete secured his first job after being released from prison. Dolly wasretired but worked full-time caring for her disabled husband. She reliedon the Soup Kitchen to help supplement her meager governmentbenefits. Stan slept alongside seven other men in the dingy PortAuthority Bus Terminal every night and was woken by Port Authority

police officers every morning, sent out to wander the streets of Manhattan untilpermitted back inside just after sunset.

My memories of Big Pete, Dolly, and Stan will remain with me forever. They accompanyme whenever I take action to combat hunger locally, like when I joined members of thiscommunity in April to deliver Passover food packages with Maot Chitim and when someof us served food at Fourth Presbyterian Church’s Sunday Night Supper program earlierthis year. I am both honored to have been witness to their stories and saddened to knowsuch struggling exists.

On June 12-15, North Shore Congregation Israel will host This Is Hunger, an interactiveexperience on wheels (literally, it’s a big rig!) brought to us by MAZON: A JewishResponse to Hunger.

When the 53-foot-long double expandable trailer is parked in our parking lot and openon both sides, it provides almost 1,000 square feet of interior space to take participants ona voyage of awareness and activism: to help them understand the stark reality of hungerin America and to spark their commitment to taking action that will help end hungeronce and for all.

Inside the truck, the experience is divided into two parts. First, participants are invited tosit at a communal table and virtually “meet” real people struggling with hunger.Portraits are projected at each end of the table, one by one, as individuals share theirstories in their own voices and in their own words. Part two invites participants areinvited to engage in activities that deepen their awareness about the complexities ofbeing hungry and join MAZON in advocating for change.

This Is Hunger is open to the community and will be at NSCI from Monday, June 12until Thursday, June 15. To reserve your FREE tickets, visit thisishunger.org and click onFind Tickets. For questions, please contact me, Rabbi Ryan Daniels:[email protected] or 847-835-0724. I look forward to seeing you in the truck!

Psalms in the Twenty-First Century with Roberta SchwartzMondays, May 22, June 5, 12, 19, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pmIs there something new under the sun, in the field of Psalms? Strangely there is. Because we nowhave decades of research based upon documents from the Dead Sea Scrolls and excavations atQumran. It is known that of all books of the Bible, in the early centuries, second and first, BCEand first century CE Psalms came in only second in popularity to Deuteronomy.

The longest book in the Bible and most complex can be studied based upon recent publications, which bring much to our understanding ofthat religious poetry. Many chords are struck therein, since Psalms was written over hundreds of years and some oral even earlier. We willconcentrate on individual psalms and conclude with a poem written by Primo Levi. He based that exposition upon Psalm 137 – a modernday connection of past and present.

This course is taught by Roberta H. Schwartz, a graduate of the University of Chicago, who holds an M.A. in Jewish Studies from Spertus.Roberta lectured and taught in that field for over 30 years and is a beloved teacher of adults here at NSCI. To sign-up, email Lisa Goosmannat [email protected].
