The North ShoreChamber will work to ensure thatthe Sixth Essex District remainsintact. In Massachusetts, the legis-lature has jurisdiction over allredistricting. The district is hometo several defense manufacturersdependent on federal budgetexpenditures including GeneralElectric, Raytheon, and TextronDefense along with numerous sub-contractors and Hanscom AFB.

Economic Development &Regionalization - To help ensurethe fiscal health of our cities andtowns, the Chamber supports andencourages cost savings throughregional solutions, pension reform,health insurance plan design(GIC). Declining state aid willrequire cities and towns to relymore heavily on property taxes tomeet expenses. Wilson also has valuable expertise in servic-ing school, public and corporate libraries,which will reinforce the services EBSCOalready provides to those and a variety ofother kinds of libraries.

The purchase of H.W. Wilson, a company thatwas founded in 1898 and still publishes someprint content, marks another stage of steadygrowth for EBSCO, which is one of thelargest employers on the North Shore,McEvoy said, and has 40 high-tech positionsthat are currently unfilled prior to the merger.

"We grow organically and through acquisi-tion," McEvoy said. "A year ago, we boughtan e-book aggregator, NetLibrary, for search-ing e-book collections. It's all about how wecan better serve the library.

EBSCO Publishing, a company that com-piles databases in a variety of academic,business and other subjects for use inlibraries, announced yesterday that it hasmerged with The H.W. Wilson Co. in a movethat will add dozens of employees and create30 new jobs in downtown Ipswich.

H.W. Wilson is a smaller database aggrega-tor in the Bronx, N.Y., that is best known forpublishing the Reader's Guide to PeriodicalLiterature. A yet-to-be determined numberof Wilson's 200 employees will eventuallyjoin the 800 workers at EBSCO. The 30 newjobs will be in editorial, sales and softwareengineering.

"All H.W. Wilson employees are nowEBSCO employees," said KathleenMcEvoy, public relations manager atEBSCO. "Ultimately, we'll migrate every-thing to Ipswich. This campus is designedfor growth."

EBSCO will absorb Wilson's 80 databasesinto the 300 databases it already produces ineverything from economics to applied sci-ences.

Wilson is "really big in areas such as art andbiographies," McEvoy said.

Databases consist largely of academicresearch published in journal articles andbooks, which are organized by subject areaand indexed. A wide range of libraries sub-
