SEASON’S GREETINGS FROM THE PASTOR...

Dear Members and Friends, December 1, 2016

“The people were waiting expectantly and

were all wondering in their hearts if John might

possibly be the Messiah” Luke 3:15

John sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the

one who is to come, or should we expect someone

else?” Matt. 11:3

So you also must be ready, because the Son of

Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Matt. 24:44

We are in the season of ‘Advent’ which means “waiting”. I like to think of it

as “Waiting” but also excitement and therefore Adventure.

Advent is the 4 weeks and Sundays before Christmas. These weeks of

waiting are exciting, just ask any kid.

When I was little I can remember how excited I would get just waiting for

Christmas. There was expectation, the element of surprise, the thrill of decorating,

making cookies (my sisters did that, I was the official taster), and wrapping gifts

(mom would take us individually and help us wrap ‘our’ gifts for the rest of the

family). I’m really happy about gift bags these days. Never liked wrapping. Yes,

there are still things about Christmas that are just exciting to do and others that just

have to be done.

On Christmas eve, my parents would take us to Grandma Hixon’s for the

night. Now, I realize just how brilliant my parents were on this move and how

patient Grandma, who was already in her late 70’s, really was.

Christmas was “tomorrow”! It was hard to control the excitement. It was

difficult falling asleep. The joy had set in. Preparations were finished (mom and dad

probably stayed up all night to finish). Now it was about gifts, food, and

celebration. “Happy Birthday, Jesus” (continued →)

Then it arrived, Christmas morning. Grandma and Uncle Wade would take

us home to where mom and dad would greet us and we would all go into the living

room together. There was always one gift for each of us that was not wrapped and

therefore quite visible there under or near the tree

Surprise, Celebrate, Give Thanks,

Play and Pray – It’s Christmas.

This is how I remember many of my childhood Christmases. And then I think

about the Christ child born in a stable and compare that to Christ being ‘born’ in our

hearts. We all are sinners and unclean, so he enters the ‘stable’ of our lives and not

into a pristine temple.

Knowing Jesus, there is expectation, the element of surprise and the thrill of

having a relationship with Him. As your relationship grows, you realize there are

many gifts that He has given you. Some are ‘wrapped’ or hidden and you have to

work to discover what they are. Yet, there are others that are right there in the open

view for you and everyone to see.

In this Advent or Adventure with Christ, one continues with great

expectations of how He is going to bring about one’s salvation or use the tragedies

and heartaches in your life for His glory and His Kingdom. As you mature in the

faith and your relationship deepens, you realize there are some adventures on the

journey that are beyond human description; the peace, the love, the forgiveness,

the security, the filling of one’s soul.

Now I am Gram, but the excitement, joy, peace, hope and love of Advent

‘waiting’ still warms my soul. Christmas is just around the corner for our earthly

celebration but may we never forget that each day is Christmas when a person

invites Jesus into their ‘stable’ and He makes them the temple of the Holy Spirit.

One day, Christ will take me ‘home’ and I will once again be greeted by

Jesus himself, mom, dad, grandma and the cloud of witness that have gone before

me and we will CELEBRATE our Lord.

Try to take a few moments and enjoy the thrill of the lights on the tree, the

bows on the gifts and thank God for the ultimate Christmas gift, Jesus Christ and

the excitement, love and surprise He brings. Merry Christmas!!!

Pastor Reppa

CHRISTMAS CAROLING to

Very SPECIAL people (who live close)

For the last 24 years when weather permitted it, we have sent a

group (sometimes 6-7 other times 20-21) out to share the joy of

music and the love of Christ to many of the people who

throughout the years have done the same for us.

We will meet at the church Sunday December 18th

at 4:00 PM. We will then

carpool from one visit to another making about 10 stops. At each place we sing,

share a warm greeting and leave after wishing them a Merry Christmas and

Happy New Year. Come join the fun. Visit with us and raise your voice in joyful

praise or even a joyful noise. Dress for the weather, we sing outdoors at most

places. We try to finish by 6pm and have hot cocoa at the church.

Mission Focus

The Giving Tree for the South Providence Neighborhood Matters was almost empty of tags the first week that they were on the tree. Thank you very much for your enthusiastic giving. Thank you also for the donated coats for the RI coat drive. The Giving Tree now has tags for gifts and clothing for our local children, listing their Christmas wishes.

December is the time to remember and provide financial assistance to the denomination's elderly ministers, missionaries, and their widowed spouses. The Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering (RMMO) will be taken on Sunday December 4. You may remember, with gratitude, those in your life that were committed servants of Jesus who told you about God and His love for you. Tom, Deana and Ethan are headed to Honduras in February. They will be taking with them a big suitcase with things that will greatly bless the children and families that they will be sharing their love with. Let’s help fill the suitcases up to the 50 lb limit with things like flip-flops, coloring books and crayons, crafts. Check out the Mission Bulletin Board for copies of the full list of items.

South Providence Neighborhood Matters

Volunteers are needed… Sunday, 12/18, Gift Gathering & sorting for Santa's Workshop, Noon to 3 p.m. 12/19-12/21, Santa's Workshop for neighbors. Mon. 5:30 pm - 7:45 pm Tues. 9:30 am - 11 am Wed. 9 am - 1 pm Our new COMMUNITY CLOSET (rotating sale) is VERY popular with neighbors but we need VOLUNTEERS to keep it open in December. SPECIAL VOLUNTEERS will regularly be needed for our after school homework and mentoring group beginning in January. Please encourage your friends and relatives to come in weekly, daily or occasionally 2:30 - 5:30 pm. We'll need to check them on BCIs and CANTS records for safety of children. Contact Yvette Kenner at SPNM 461-7509 for more information.

THE ADVENT SEASON & THE CHRISMON TREE

The Evergreen Tree symbolizes eternal life which our Savior Jesus Christ offers us.

The Chrismons (Christ’s Monogram) are made in white and gold. The white represents our Lord’s purity and perfection; the gold His majesty and glory. A touch of red is to remind us of the blood of Christ by which we were saved. They proclaim the Name, the Life, and saving Acts of Jesus Christ. The pearl is symbolic of the Word of God. The circle is God’s eternal love, eternal life.

#1. Epiphany Star - The Bethlehem Star which led the Wise Men to the Christ Child.

#2. Fish – This symbol is the Greek word for fish. It is an acrostic of the first letters of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior. It was a secret sign used by Christians to identify themselves to each other during days of persecution.

#3. Crooks and Lambs – The good shepherd.

#4 – Butterfly – The resurrection of our Lord.

#5 – Dove – The Holy Spirit.

#6 – Cross – Always a reminder of our Lord’s saving work of redemption.

#7 – Cross and Crown – Kingship of our Lord; His victory over sin and death, His place of hon-or at the right hand of God.

#8 – Rose – The nativity of our Lord.

#9 – Alpha & Omega. First and last letters in the Greek Alphabet. “I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” Rev.22:13

#10 – Orb – The earth. The pearl in the center represents His kingdom which is like one pearl of great price.

#11 – Holy Trinity – Any design of three equal parts may symbolize the Holy Trinity – One God in three persons (Father, Son, Holy Spirit)

#12 – Bookmark – represents the word, the Bible.

#13 – Light – Jesus is the Light of the World.

#14 – Anchor Cross – Represents the coming of Christ which brings Hope. The shells symbolize baptism.

#15 – Palm – represents Jesus’ triumphant entry to Jerusalem

OUR BROTHER IN THE PEW

Ralph Churchill was born January 31, 1929 to Helen and Otto Churchill.

He was the Churchill’s oldest child. Ralph has a sister Dorothy Allen and a

younger brother Sam. Ralph lived in Connecticut until he was about 15 years

old and then his family moved to North Scituate, RI when his father became the

pastor of this church, NSBC.

The Churchill family moved into the church parsonage that was on

Danielson Pike. The house still exists, it now houses Pollard Law Inc, #118.

As a young man of 15 years, Ralph was a part of the young men’s

Sunday School class that was taught by Emily Barrett’s father, Alston Spencer.

The young men took over the job of being the ushers each week in the worship

services. They would usher people in to help them find a seat in a full church.

The young men also had the responsibility of ringing the bell and taking the

collection each week. Ralph remembers doing that for many years.

The year after coming to the village of North Scituate, Ralph joined the

Volunteer Fire Company as a junior firefighter. When he turned eighteen he

already knew how to handle himself in a fire and he was part of that fire

department for over 58 years.

He went to high school in Providence of course, because there was no

high school in Scituate at the time. Upon high school graduation, he went to

college in North Carolina at Mars Hill College. It was a Baptist College and the

president of the college and Dr. Churchill were classmates and friends when

they were at Yale. It was a good school to go to because there were discounts

for Baptists and because it made it possible for Ralph to get away from the

small town of North Scituate.

When Ralph graduated from college he came home and found a job in the Sargent Lace Mill, which was located right behind the parsonage. He did regular maintenance there and because of his chemistry background, he soon got a job testing with Texas Instruments. During the conflict with Korea, he was drafted and once again because of his background in chemistry he was stationed in Japan. There he took care of making sure there was oil and fuel for the airplanes, tanks and equipment that were being used in Korea. (continued)

OUR BROTHER IN THE PEW

When he came home from the service, he settled once again in North

Scituate. Ralph remained in this small town until just about a year-and-a-half

ago when he moved to Brookdale in Smithfield.

In his younger years, Ralph loved to hike and play tennis. Now when he

has difficulty getting around or doing anything, he sometimes questions what his

purpose is. Ralph dearly loves to have visitors, has difficulty reading his mail but

loves to have telephone calls.

Ralph is one of those members who are so faithful until their bodies no

longer can make the journey to the church building. Today he remains

connected to this Body of Christ and is spiritually strong.

Ralph used to sit with his father in the 4th pew back, center section

closest to the driveway. When his father died, Ralph stayed in that location and

Norma Heath often joined him to keep him company. It was not long after

Norma’s death that the pew in the center section of the church was empty. But

when I, Pastor Reppa, look at that pew I know it is the ‘Churchill pew’ and each

time the curtain in the front of the church is opened I know that Ralph would be

happy to see it. He loved being able to see the painted mural on the wall.

Thank you Ralph for sharing your story, such a big part of our church

history.

CAN YOU HELP!!!!

The church has been given curtains for Jordan Hall.

They can be used on the stage and also on the windows. They pass the fire

code and are in great condition. BUT we need someone who can hem them.

Do you sew? Do you have a sewing machine?

Do you know someone that you would recommend? The price to buy

these drapes would be beyond our budget. But unless we have them hemmed

they are no use. Please contact the church office if you can help.

CELEBRATING 50 YEAR MEMBERS

On Sunday November 27, 2016 we recognized those members who have been members of

North Scituate Baptist Church for 50 or more years. A certificate was presented to Priscilla

Martin, celebrating her 50 year anniversary. She accepted the Right Hand of Fellowship on

April 7, 1966. Congratulations to Priscilla. Thank you to all the members of NSBC for your

dedication and commitment to our Savior Jesus Christ and His church.

Dear Members & Friends,

We are excited about creating a NEW PICTORIAL DIRECTORY for our

church family. The directory will help us to connect names with faces. It is also

an ideal way to capture the history of our church congregation. But this will not

work without YOU.

Please participate!

We ask that you have your picture taken by the professional

photographer at the church. To make an appointment please call the church

office (401) 647-3238 during office hours Monday through Friday from 9 – 1.

You can also make appointments before and after services and meetings at the

church. Please sign up as soon as possible to get the best appointment to fit

your schedule.

Every participating family/household that selects a pose for the directory

will receive a free directory and a complimentary 8x10 portrait. You will have

the opportunity to order additional portraits during your scheduled appointment

time.

You need only make one trip to the church, since the photography and

portrait viewing will be completed in one visit. This program is available at no

cost to the church.

Whether you decide to dress formal or casual, you will want to make the

most of this opportunity.

The scheduled dates for photography and portrait viewing are:

Friday December 9th

and Saturday December 10th

And again Friday January 6th

and Saturday January 7th

If you have questions, please contact; Pastor Reppa 401-529-6607,

THINKING ABOUT BAPTISM

And / Or

Becoming a Member of NSBC

Has the Holy Spirit touched your soul and called your name? Have you been

pondering the idea of baptism and making a commitment to Christ and His

church?

Or perhaps you have previously joined the church but have not experienced

‘believer’s baptism’ or you have been pondering making your membership

official. Is the time here to step up and declare your commitment?

There will be a baptism service on Palm Sunday April 9, 2017. If you would

like to be a part of that class and preparation, please contact Dr. Reppa. If you

have been baptized but have not become a member here, speak to Dr. Reppa

and get your interview scheduled and the process started to join the living Body

of Christ known as North Scituate Baptist Church. Classes, meetings and

interviews will be starting in January and they will be scheduled at a time that is

most feasible for all involved. So bring your suggestions on meeting times.

If you’ve driven by the church, then you have seen the

caution tape, construction equipment and men

working. Work has officially begun on the church’s

new roof. The Board of Trustees decided to go with

Josh’s Construction to complete the job. After the roof

is complete, they will shift their work to the siding on

certain sides of the church. Stay tuned for the finished product and let’s

“Raise the Roof!”

**REMINDER**

All boards should have submitted their 2017 budget to the finance board.

If you haven’t, please do so. Thanks!

BLOOD DRIVE ON MARCH 27, 2016

In Loving Memory Of

Beth Broadfield & Barbara Neri

A blood drive will be held at the North Scituate Baptist

Church in Jordan Hall. on March 27 from 3 PM – 8 PM

Plan to give the gift of life in memory of Beth and Barbara as a way to glorify

our Savior who gave His life for us.

There is No such thing as artificial blood. The only way it is available when

others need it is if YOU and I give while we can.

Come and give whether it is you 100th time, your 1

st or if it has been years

since you gave. If you are not sure whether you can give or not – come and find

out for sure.

If you are unable to give for any reason, you can still help out that day.

Think about. Pray about it. Plan to DO SOMETHING about it. You will be

hearing more about this opportunity to reach out to the community with the gift

of life, the gospel of Christ and the gift of life – blood. Dr. Reppa plans to be

here through the day and will even provide rides for those who need

transportation.

So plan on being a part of celebrating Bethany and Barbara’s beautiful lives

that glowed with the grace of Jesus Christ – come give the gift of life to another.
