RIVERSIDE CHILI SUPPER The RCA Chili Supper is a neighborhood tradition held each November for over 30 years. This is a fun event that brings Riversiders of all ages, as well as folks from the surrounding neighborhoods together for an even-ing of fun, food and fellowship. This is usually held on the second Tuesday evening of November but this year due to Election Day our Chili Supper will be No-vember 15th from 5:30-7:00. North Riversiders, please join us for good food, good company and a good time!

THE FRESH AIR BABY CAMP AKA GIRL SCOUT LITTLE HOUSE

With the help of Westar, the Park Department and our volunteer electrician, we have underground electric service and are close to having power in the building. Volunteers are working inside, repairing termite damage, cleaning and re-plastering interior walls. Framing for new partition walls is almost complete and we are finalizing choices for plumbing fixtures, lighting, kitchen items and finishes. If you can help with securing more funds, with in-kind donations of materials, or can swing a hammer or sweep a floor, give us a call. We also need volunteers to sheet-rock ceilings and a few walls, and we need trim carpenters. Contact Claire Willenberg at 990-4407.

WILDLIFE EXHIBIT (LITTLE ZOO) NEWS A brief review of work completed and work planned: In 2015—The upgrading of each enclosure to improve the quality of the residence was completed. A new security system was installed. In 2016 — Tweaking the alarm and upgrading the video feed of the security system to help insure a first class system was accomplished. Designed new and professional quality signs with decorative frames. This includes colorful depictions of the occupants with some brief educational information. A shout-out to Riversider Steve Perry for his work on the design. The new signage will be installed this fall as they are completed. Due to the many generous donations including R.C.A.’s $3,000 gift in January and a $500 grant from DeVaugn James in Sep-tember, we are only about $4,300 short of covering the total sign cost. Still to do: Refurbishing the permanent support structure and installation of new netting. More on this project later. The committee continues to work on raising funds to ensure the Exhibit remains in the park for years to come. We are in the process of applying for several grants. The brick-buying project continues and any and all donations are greatly appreciated. For more information on the Exhibit and/or how to make a do-nation can be found on the website: www.wichitaparksfoundation.org. Kathy Dittmer 262-6165

In the early 20th century labor-intensive, carved stone trim on public buildings and fancy masonry residences was

replaced by less expensive mold-ed concrete. In Wichita, one company went a step farther, creating a col-ored concrete product. At the October 17th-meeting of our neighborhood association,

Barbara Hammond will present a fascinating slide show about “Carthalite, Wichita’s Beautiful Concrete.” 7pm-be there!

Dr. Seuss Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.

City to Host 9th Annual Big Read Big Read Wichita returns for its ninth consecutive year. Big Read Wichita is a program providing residents opportunities to expe-rience quality literary and arts programming throughout the community that is focused around one book and its themes. This year's selection is Ray Bradbury's classic Fahrenheit 451. The book explores themes of censorship, message control, and the efforts some will go to preserve literature and the free-dom of public information. The Wichita Public Library joins with dozens of other local or-ganizations and community groups to provide the community with a variety of programs throughout Big Read Wichita, which runs October 1 through November 15, 2016. Firsts for Big Read Wichita include a special production by the Wichita Community Theatre and symphony performances by the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. Other featured events include a kick-off party on Saturday, October 1 at the Wichita Art Museum and a spe-cial presentation on November 5 by Ray Bradbury's official biog-rapher, Sam Weller. The community is encouraged to read the book, which is availa-ble for checkout in print, audio book, and as an e-book from the Wichita Public Library, as well as to attend any of the dozens of Big Read Wichita events happening throughout the community. Readers are invited to join the conversation at the Big Read's Facebook page or on Twitter using #BigReadICT. More information on the Big Read, a media kit, and the full list of events can be found at www.bigreadwichita.org.

Veterans' Memorial Park continues to be upgraded and make the news August 2016 Steve MacIntosh on 1330AM. Submitted by Francine Sharp The City will be installing more skateboard deterrents on some memorials, benches and walls. The river sidewalk is quite handy, smooth and long, so skaters (as well as bikers, walkers, rollerbladers) enjoy the scenery that extends east from the "Keeper of the Plains" bridges, on both sides of the Arkansas River through downtown Wichita. VMP offers a number of shady spots for relaxation or reading, and each memorial is special within its own form and infor-mation. Currently the WW II "Kilroy" memorial is in the final stages of erecting an alphabetical board so names can easily be found, hoping to be unveiled on Veteran's Day 2016. The second memorial currently in progress is the American Revo-lution Memorial, to the NE of WW II. The bas' relief has been placed on the surround wall, and tells of the varied people involved with help and support during that war. It is not only an history lesson for those who see but for those who are blind. Some donated tiles have already been placed on the wall, others are currently awaiting placement, and there are still some available. www.amrevwm.com A total donation of $100 is asked for each tile. Help is available for the selection of names, places or battles. The newest addition, the Reconciliation Memorial, sits to the NE of each of these memorials. It is the history of the Civil War, and was dedicated earlier this year. And in the works, an extension of the Viet Nam Memorial will be forthcom-ing. More information as soon as details are known. Veterans' Memorial Park, just west of 2nd Street and N. Wa-co, is Wichita's "Best Kept Secret" but more and more people from Wichita are finding this beautiful park. It seems like visi-tors from out of town find it more readily as they enjoy walk-ing from the local hotels to the river! Please help us promote this Park, located on Veterans Parkway!

Shocker Rowing Events Shocker Smash Regatta is October 15th.

The 25th Annual Frostbite Regatta is coming! Sunday, November 6th on the Little Arkansas River The race begins at the 11th street bridge and ends by the Tennis Center. The course is a 1.7 mile head race, which can be fol-lowed in its entirety along the sidewalk. Bike or walk and follow the course through Riverside Park. The official course record of 7:07, by the University of Colorado Men’s Eight was set in 2007.

Wichita Rowing Association has been active in Wichita for over 40 years. The club owns a number of sculling shells and offers sculling lessons throughout the spring, summer and fall, as well as high school rowing program and masters program. Nothing beats viewing Wichita from a rowing shell on the Little Arkansas!

MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Participate on a neighborhood project or serve as a NRNA officer. Like to dig in the dirt? We need help with the gardens. Enjoy meeting new people? Join a group to welcome new residents. Want exercise? Help deliver newspapers. Call an officer and Volunteer—its good for the soul!
