COLD WEATHER TIPS Ensure there are no gaps in insulation or crawl spaces that ex-pose pipes to cold air, which could put the pipes at risk of freez-ing and bursting. Have your heating system checked by a licensed technician be-fore cold weather requires daily use. Block drafts around doors, windows and baseboards with weather stripping, window film and caulk to control heat loss. Install storm doors and windows to improve energy-efficiency. Have chimneys cleaned by an experienced chimney sweep to prevent the risk of a fire from buildup or blockages. Spray door locks with powdered-graphite lubricant to prevent freezing and sticking. Set ceiling fans to rotate clockwise to force rising warm air back towards the floor. CHANGE IS IN THE AIR! Meetings drop to 6 in 2017

Submitted by Sharon Quincy

Testing the waters, your North Riverside Neighborhood Association Board has decided to drop the number of regular association meetings from 11 annually to 6. Here’s the background…… Since meeting attendance has de-clined and projects and obligations have increased, it was decided that reserving creative time and energy for the other on-going endeavors and administrative work of North Riverside was a priority. The June 2017 Tri-Neighborhood Picnic will continue! 2017 Meeting Schedule: January 16 March 20 May 15 (June—picnic) July 17 September 18 November 13

ZOO for You! Every Wednesday, November 2016 through February 2017: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Grab your coats, throw on your mittens and head over to the Sedgwick County Zoo for Winter Wednes-days! Spend the day in the refreshing outdoors for $3.00 per person.

The North Riverside News is an advertiser-supported publication by the NRNA. It is published bi-monthly and is distributed free to homes and apartment buildings in our area. The News is delivered by neighborhood volunteers.

New Online Garage Sale

Permits and Advertising Just visit www.wichita.gov, look for the garage sale sign icon in the middle of the page, and click. Set up an account by en-tering an email address and create a private password. Apply for a permit or search the City's garage sale permit "ads" and locations. More than 5,000 garage sale permits are issued each year. The new system will allow users to add information about each sale, including what merchandise is offered at the sale (e.g. tools, books, clothing, furniture, etc.). Users can cre-ate a "classified" ad about their sale to be carried on the City's website. The information will be available for free to anyone with Internet access. A Google map will pinpoint the location of each garage sale and a report can be printed listing each sale. The information for a sale may even include up to five photograph images that can be uploaded with the ad.

There is no additional cost to advertise on the website. The $2.50-a-day cost of the permit includes the inclusion of each garage sale's advertisement on the website. Users searching for garage sales pay nothing.

Dillon's grocery stores discontinued selling garage sale permits from customer service counters on Jan.1. Since then, residents have had to go to the 1st floor of City Hall or purchase a permit at The Wichita Eagle. The new system is timely and more con-venient.

MARSHALL LEADERSHIP CADETS MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Tony Emond MSgt, USAF (Ret), Leadership Instructor – Marshall A core mission of the Wichita Leadership Program is to help develop in our students a sense and appreciation for community service and volunteerism. Our Marshall students have been doing some good things: On October 10th, twelve Marshall Leadership Cadets volunteered to help Woodland Methodist Church prepare for their big fall festival and lasagna dinner, as well as their “ Spooktacular” Hal-loween event. They helped set up tables and chairs and get the gym prepared for these important and popular events! On October 17th, eight Cadets volunteered to support Ms. Liebst and her “Girls on the Run” 5k color run. These students were stationed at various checkpoints throughout the running course and provided the “COLOR” for the participants! On October 31st, three Marshall Leadership Cadets delivered over 20 Halloween candy bags to young patients in the Via Christi Pediatric Ward who were unable to go “Trick-or—Treating!” The smiles of joy on the patients faces, as well as the smiles of satisfaction on my cadet’s faces was priceless and can’t be put into words! On November 5th, nine Cadets sacrificed time on their Saturday morning to march in the annual Veterans day parade in downtown Wichita. Our Marshall Cadets joined with Cadets from other schools to represent the Wichita Leadership Corps with dignity and enthusiasm! After the parade two of our Cadets then went to the local VFW to volunteer more of their

Saturday to support a flag retirement ceremony in which 800+ American flags were retired with pride and dignity! There are other volunteer opportunities that our Leadership Cadets will be supporting as the holiday season fast approaches!

DID YOU KNOW? PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LOWERS CANCER RISK

When asked about how our lifestyles affect our risk of cancer, most are aware that smoking can cause lung cancer, and that sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. However, physical activity is known to lower the risk of some cancers, specifically breast cancer and colon cancer. A new study published in 2016 also saw an association of physical activity with lower risks of 13 other varieties of cancer. This is an interesting finding which further suggests that being active is good for your health in all kinds of ways! Choose your favorite activity, and try to spend at least 30 minutes, five days/week, doing it. Remember that walking at a moderate pace counts! Wichita has many parks, biking and walking paths. Take ad-vantage of them! Submitted by Barbara Coats, MD

CITY CODE for HOUSE ADDRESS NUMBERS After review, city council voted in October to revise the code requirements for house number as follows: Section 10.04.190 “Duty of owner or occupant to place and size of house numbers.” The owner or occupant of every one or two family dwelling in the City is required to conspicuously place on the residence house numbers of at least three (3) inches in height. Painting house numbers on the Curb alone shall not be sufficient to comply with this Section. Such numbers shall be of a contrast with their background such that police officers and firefighters can read the numbers from the abutting street. Any property owner failing to comply with this Section shall be punished by a fine of twenty five (25) dollars. Each day house numbers are not properly placed on the residence is a separate and distinct offense. Additionally, council reviewed the operational guidelines that document that property owners are to be given the opportuni-ty to bring their house numbers into compliance before tickets were written. Commercial properties are required to have address numbers of at least four (4) inches in height.

11th Hour Project Submitted by Beck Farris During a time when budgets for school music programs have been cut and private lessons are unaffordable for many families, there is now a low cost music education opportunity right here in the North Riverside neighbor-hood. Pastor Michelle Reed came up with the idea for a youth guitar program at Woodland UMC and was able to secure funding for start-up costs through a grant from the United Methodist Church by the fall of 2015. She enlisted volunteer Becky Farris as music instructor and director of the program.

The 11th Hour Project is a 10-week guitar and songwriting class for grades 6-12 that uses musical expression to promote peace Each week, the students enjoy an after school snack as they first get a lesson based on the Golden Rule. The music lessons that follow promote student confidence and generate inner peace so that they can confront the struggles of adolescence with thoughtfulness and compassion. Each session, the students learn the chords to a popular song and then write their own lyrics about issues they face. The session culminates with a recording of the song and a performance for friends and family. Recordings from the first two sessions can be heard on SoundCloud.com and the lyrics are posted on the 11th Hour Project’s Facebook page.

The upcoming session of 11thHP will start Jan. 11, 2017. The cost of the class is $25 and this includes the use of a student guitar and starter accessories. Students have the option of purchasing the guitar, gig bag, and tuner for an additional $35.

For more information or to find out how you can help, please call Becky Farris @ 316-259-2973.
