Give people more opportunities to get involved and support our work. Be an inclusive, welcoming and sustainable organisation. Purpose of the Regional Advisory Board

Our Advisory Board is a group of up to ten volunteers who provide expert support and advice to our Regional Director and his team of staff working across the North. Board members bring their knowledge of the region, and experience of their own sector, to help us deliver our strategy, ‘For Everyone, For Ever’ (Annex A). Over the next five years we aim to:

• Look after the places in our care, giving them a sustainable future.• Improve the state of nature in the UK.• Make sure our places keep evolving, attracting people and inspiring them.• Address unequal access to nature, beauty and history, especially in our urban places.• Give people more opportunities to get involved and support our work.• Be an inclusive, welcoming and sustainable organisation.

Board members come together to help the Regional Director and his team develop their thinking on a strategic priority or theme. They bring insights and innovation from external organisations and other sectors to challenge us to think creatively and see the bigger picture. The North Regional Advisory Board is one of five regional and two country Boards across the National Trust in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the Chairs of these seven Boards meet twice a year.

We know that we can do much more to make our places more welcoming, relevant and accessible to more people. We are committed to developing our people, reviewing our programming and updating our internal policies and practices to help us achieve our ambition to be a more inclusive, and welcoming and sustainable organisation.

We are looking for people with a diversity of thought and experience who can support and challenge us to achieve these ambitions.

Appointments are made for three years and administration is kept light-touch, in keeping with the purely advisory role of the Board.

The Board meets about three times a year for visits and discussions with National Trust staff. Board members are invited to help facilitate these sessions, which could involve more time, or members are invited to attend other National Trust events. Members may also be invited to use their expertise to support projects and other challenges outside of Board meetings. The overall time commitment is an average of five days per year, with meetings held during the working week.

Board members are asked to be open about any relevant responsibilities and positions and declare any conflict of interest. The Regional Director and his team may share confidential or sensitive information with the Board, so members are also required to maintain confidentiality when requested.

These are voluntary roles, and this arrangement is not meant to be a legally binding one or an employment contract.

1Our National Trust Values

Our National TrustThe National Trust means all kinds of things to all kinds of people. So, inside the Trust, it’s important that we share a clear understanding of who we are and what we stand for.

Every organisation has to be clear about its purpose and communicate it as simply and effectively as possible to the world outside. The words in the pink box are designed to enable us all to do this.

The challenges and opportunities facing us are greater than ever. We have a renewed focus on the crisis facing nature. We have urgent work to do today and long-term plans for a better tomorrow. Together, talking in one clear voice and living our values, we can achieve a huge amount.

How we do itWe live by four key values:

We love people and places

People and places need each other to thrive. We care for nature, beauty and history for everyone, for ever.

We welcome everyone

We are for everyone. We play a positive role locally and nationally connecting and inspiring people.

We think now and for ever

Be part of creating a lasting legacy for the future by valuing what we have, embracing change and moving forward.

We make it happen

We move forward with purpose and focus, always aiming to simplify and improve.

What we doWe protect and care for places so people and nature can thrive. Many millions share the belief that nature, beauty and history are for everyone. So we look after the nation’s coastline, historic sites, countryside and green spaces, ensuring everyone benefits.

Why we do itNature and the historic environment are under threat. They’re essential to everyone, they enrich people’s lives and are part of the fabric of society and they urgently need more care.

Where we do itFrom wild and precious places to the world outside your window, the National Trust offers access, enjoyment and a chance for everyone to help out.

Who we areWith our staff, members, volunteers and supporters, we are the biggest conservation charity in Europe. Everyone can get involved, everyone can make a difference.

What we believe inNature, beauty, history. For everyone, for ever.
