North County Leader - 4th March 2013

Local Swords woman and Paralympic champion, Catherine Walsh, has decided to call it a day and retire from competitive Paralympic sports, after excelling in her field for almost two decades. She intends to retire in order to focus more on her family life, but she says she’ll be continuing her involvement with Paralympics Ireland in the future. This local sports heroine and multi Olympic medal winner, is one of the North County’s most successful athletics, having competed in six consec- utive Paralympic Games during her vast sporting career. Catherine, who is visually impaired, is a true veteran of the Paralympics, and has represented Ireland at the games since 1992. She has achieved so many outstanding accomplish- ments throughout her sporting career (though she remains hugely modest about her success), and her skill and dedication right from the very start meant that she was destined for great things. She first competed as a track and field athlete in four Paralympic Games between 1992 and 2004, then went on to win a bronze in the Pentathlon in Sydney 2000. It was in 2007 she transferred to tandem cycling and competed in the Beijing Paralympic Games. Following from this, in 2009 she returned to the podium winning silver at the 2009 UCI Track World Championships. Then, in 2011, with her new sighted pilot, Fran Meehan, they won a bronze medal at both UCI World Championships that year. They followed this up with gold in the Individual Pursuit at the UCI Track World Championships in 2012, in the lead up to the London Olympics. This Paralympic cyclist, who works as a physiother- apist at Lusk Community Centre, said that one of her many standout moments was her double win in the 2012 London Paralympic Games. Speaking exclu- sively to the County Leader she said “It was such a brilliant moment for us, to win the first ever Paralympic cycling medal for Ireland”. “We were very proud.” Indeed in 2012, she had much reason to be proud, as her fantastic success at the London Paralympic Games with her pilot Fran, overjoyed the North County, and ensured that we were right up there with the best in the world. The winning pair went for glory, and won two Paralympic medals, and made history by securing Ireland’s first ever Paralympic cycling medal. They won silver in the Individual Pursuit on the Track, and then won a bronze medal in the time trial. Catherine said that she was very happy with her decision to retire. “It came from a combination of factors, one being that for some health issues I felt that I wasn’t going to be able to achieve a Gold Medal in the 2016 Olympics, which was what I wanted to achieve. I soon realised that this wasn’t going to be achievable, and that combined with the fact that my kids are getting older, and I want to be around for them, made me come to my decision to retire from the competitive side of things. But, I’ve had a good run and I’m more than happy with every- thing that I have achieved.” She went on to say that she won’t be giving up cycling completely, as she intends to coach locally and wants to stay involved with the Irish Paralympics. “I hope to always be associated with Paralympics Ireland,” she continued. “People will still see me out on the bike, as I hope to do some local coaching to help the sportsmen and women, who are hoping to move up the ranks in the sport, and will be involved in the Hibernian Track Cycle with Fingallians in May.” To mark the occasion, Paralympics Ireland CEO, Liam Harbison (who was also Chef de Mission for the 2012 London Games), had some lovely words to say about Catherine. “Catherine has had a wonderful Paralympic career that many can only dream of, like competing at six consecutive Games is a massive achievement in itself,” he told the County Leader. “To then medal at two Games in different disciplines sets her apart, and is testament to her enormous talent and unrivalled work ethic. She is a tremendous role model for any aspiring athlete; driven, hardworking, committed, and one of the fiercest competitors around.” Many will agree that this Swords lady will be sorely missed in the field of Paralympic sports, but she can retire, full in the knowledge that she has been a truly outstanding athletic, and one that the North County has been privileged to call their own. Tom has selflesslydevoted his Monday nights, tofundraising for the St FrancisHospice, where he has been thequiz master in the Estuary Pub inSwords, every Monday night, withall proceeds going to the charity. The quiz has been going on everyMonday night for the past 14 yearsat the Estuary Pub in Swords, andfor two years previously in theHarp Bar. In all that time, a stag-gering €150,000 has been raisedfor the popular charity.Tom spoke to the County Leaderabout how the idea came to him.“My mother was in the care of theSt Francis Hospice, and I startedthe quiz in Harp Bar in Swordsaround 1998 and then came hereto the Estuary in 2000, when theHarp closed down. We have raisedover €150,000 in that time.Strangely enough, it was on theeight anniversary of my mother’sdeath at the hospice, that wereached the €100,000 mark.”“Many of the people who are heretonight, are people who havesupported the quiz, right from the

beginning. Some of them trans-ferred to here, when the Harpclosed down. We’re here 50Mondays in the year for the past16 years.” “It’s all down to theloyal supporters of the quiz, whocome here in all weathers. All I dois just ask the questions,” saidTom in a self effacing way. “While Imight be the conduit throughwhich it comes about, if it wasn’tfor these people and theirgenerosity, we would never haveraised that amount of money”. Ethel McKenna, CEO of St FrancisHospice, had nothing but theheight of praise for the selflessactions of Tom and the people whosupport the charity. She told theCounty Leader, “We are so deeplygrateful to Tom for his hugely loyalcommitment and support of St.Francis Hospice over the years.Tom and his supporters havehelped to create funds, so thatpatients and families will experi-ence compassionate caring at adeep physical, spiritual andemotional level when they are inmost need of support in theirlives,” she said.

There aregroups of youth whoare coming down hereat night in cars, whopartake in a lot of anti-social behaviour, andare also dumpingmaterial in the area, from their cars. This, along with the noiselevels is, as you canimagine, causingimmense annoyanceand distress for resi-dents.”“Locals in the imme-diate area are drivingthis request to havevehicles banned fromthe area, but I believethere is widespreadsupport for this tohappen. The notice ofclosure has gone outon public display, anddepending on theresponse, we can acton it,” he concluded.

Local councillor, Gerry McGuire is pictured at the end ofBurrow Road in Portrane, which he feels needs to beclosed off to traffic.

Labour party candidate for theSwords electoral area, Duncan Smith, has just launched his e lect ioncampaign, and vows to inject new lifeinto the local political system. He spoke to the County Leader aboutchanges he feels need to beaddressed. “I bought my house in theCastleview area of Swords in 2008about two months before theeconomy went bust. The vulnerability I felt atthat time prompted me to join the Labour Party. Iwas always a strong Labour supporter and since

then, I’ve become more active in the Party. I’veseen up close how communities, and particularlythe newer ones with young families have to fightfor basic services, like playgrounds and commu-nity centres. Everything is a struggle and a fightand this should not be the case,” he said. Smithfirmly believes that there is a need for a strongleft of centre voice in the community. There’salready a strong left of centre vote in Swords andI feel we need new, strong candidates on the left, who are inspired by the current economic diffi-culties we have experienced, and I think we needthat voice to be heard at Council level,” he said.

He laid out his plans fo the community, ifhe gets the nod in May. “If I get elected, there will be no harder working councillorthan me. I have the necessary hardworking ethic and degree of integrity tobenefit the people of Swords. I would notbe found wanting.”Smith is passionate about communitymatters in the area, and he stressed thatthe community is where we put our kids to

school and raise our families. “I will be a strongvoice for these people in the Council chamber”he concluded.

Contact Virgoe McEnery LandscapingFairways, Balheary, Swords, Co. Dublin

Brendan Hyland lives in the lovely seaside town ofMornington, Co Meath on Golf Link Road, but badlyneeded his garden to be upgraded, and didn’t knowquite how to go about it.“We looked around in our own area to see if there wasany company that we liked, that could do the job for us,but there was nobody suitable. We decided to lookfurther afield and Virgoe McEnery was one of thecompanies that caught our attention. At first we thoughtthat they were too big to deal with our problem, because Virgoe McEnery deals with shopping centresand housing estates, and that a relatively small job, likeours, would be of no interest to them. However, nothingcould have been further from the truth,” said Brendan.“Michael McEnery came to meet us and confirmed that he was happy to take on the project. We went throughwhat we wanted and Michael came up with some other suggestions that we would never have thought of. Hesaid that there was no problem in carrying out our requirements. Our garden was very wet and they put in adrainage system that was tailored specifically to our garden, and that subsequently has proven very successfulafter a very wet winter.”Michael and his workers could not have been more helpful, and nothing was toomuch for them. We had a plain wall all around the back, and we had decided thatwe would get it plastered and painted at some time in the future. However,Michael said that they would do this themselves, and they did a fantastic job.”Brendan was full of praise for the professionalism of Michael and his workforce.“You couldn’t ask for better. They were lovely people and they made you feel atease immediately. They are the sort of people that you could fully trust around

your house, when you’re not there. The endresult is that we are delighted with the work thatVirgoe McEnery did for us. The real bonus for usis that if we have any issues, they are at the endof the phone, ready to help us. They just didn’t disappear when they were paid, they would drop out to see that everything was to our liking. Their after salesservice is excellent, and just demonstrates the professionalism, that is veryimportant to the company,” said Brendan.“They left the place in immaculate condition when they were finished, just asthey had promised on day one. I am extremely happy with the service theyprovided and I feel I got great value for money and have no hesitation in recom-mending Virgoe McEnery for any garden landscaping or maintenance work,”concluded Brendan.

Michael Russell, Swords“Yes. Very much so because of all the skulduggery going on now.”

In light of the ongoing Garda whistle blower controversy, we asked people, “Is a Commission ofInquiry needed at this point, to get to the truth?”Q:

Diane Simms, Donabate“Well what kind of inquiry, because I’m not into tribunals, they cost a

massive amount of money. I think absolutely it should be investigatedwhat happened, because that Garda was hung out to dry.”

James McMahon, Monaghan “I absolutely think an inquiry is needed. There’s too much trans-parency, there’s too much off loading, there’s too much kicking thecan down the road. They need to address the issue full on and have alocal and transparent inquiry, so that we can see what the issues are.”

Jane Fitzcurtis, Swords“It definitely would have been needed if there was going to be an

inquiry. They need to out whoever was doing wrong.”

Eddie Bank, Swords“I don’t think so at this point, because it is costing us a shed load ofmoney, and what will we get out of it?”

Pauline O’Rourke, Swords“Yes. It’s all to do with the lies that were told, the cover ups. The peopleneed an inquiry.”

Richard Parish, Swords“Yes, I definitely think so.”

John Cumiskey, Swords“At this point probably not, because there’s not enough to be known.

Whether I think they need to down the line, yes probably”

Edwin Sweeney, Swords“Definitely needed. I think the government are hiding a lot of stuff.Alan Shatter, Enda Kenny, there’s a lot of corruption.”

Derek Bourne, Swords“Yes, definitely yes. Because they’re just being ignored. I think there’s

more to it than just penalty points and it needs to come out. Thereseems to be a massive cover up at the moment.”

Margaret Casey, Swords“I couldn’t really tell you, There’s too many problems going on.”

Mick Coffey, Rush“Yes. There’s too much behind closed door stuff going on at the

moment, it’s as simple as that.”

Proposed MalahideDevelopment StillCausing ConcernA proposed development of new housesacross from Malahide Community School, isstill causing concern for a school and localcouncillor. In the latest news of theproject, it seems the County Councilare unlikely to provide a new foot-path opposite this development ofnew houses across from MalahideCommunity School, despite a BordPleanála inspector pointing to safetyissues for pedestrians in the area ifthe development went ahead. AnBord Pleanála granted planning permissionfor a development on Seamount Road oppo-site the school, but it’s own inspector hadsome safety concerns about how pedes-trians would navigate the area, according tolocal Counci l lor Judy Dunne (Lab) at arecent area meeting. Dunne quoted the

inspector, who recommended refusal of theplanning permission, saying: “The proposalwould generate appreciable addit ionalnumbers of northbound pedestrians, whichwould lead to conflict and the inherentlyhazardous overspill of pedestrians on to theadjoining carriageway.”“Public safety would thereby be endan-gered and the promotion of walking, as a

preferred mode of transport, which isin accordance with the objectives ofthe Council development Plan 2011-2017 and the advice of the DesignManual for Urban Roads and Streets, would be thwarted,” she continued. But a new footpath along the easternside of the R124, requested by theschool and backed by Dunne, was

effectively dismissed by the Council. Theyresponded by saying: “The provision of thisfootpath would require a significant amountof works to be carried out, including landacquisition, and he costs are likely to bequite considerable. It should be noted thata source of funding is not currently avail-able for this project. she concluded”

Cllr. Judy Dunne.

Local man, Adrian Henchy launched his 2014 LocalElection campaign, as a Fianna Fail candidate in theSwords Ward last week. At a well-attendedcampaign launch in Keelings in Donabate, Henchyoutlined his priorities for the communities ofDonabate, Portrane and Swords, Seatown and Lissenhall whichincluded, investing in and supporting local business and investing insports and recreational facilities for young people, among other issues. Born and raised in Portrane, schooled in Swords and living in Donabate,Henchy has deep roots in the area with a long, active involvement in thecommunity. From managing St Patrick’s senior football team, coachingkids and adults in Portrane Hockey Club, being an active board memberof Donabate Portrane Community Centre and a figure in securing the all-weather pitch in Donabate, it certainly appears that working hard tocontribute to his community is already a part of his day job. When askedwhat sets him apart from other local election candidates, he told theCounty Leader: “Do you want career politicians who give timely sound-bites or generic blurbs on the current hot topics, or do you want some-body who is visibly active and involved within the community that canreally champion your priorities effectively? I firmly believe that you mustput yourself out there, to do your very best for the community and ‘no’or ‘sorry, can’t do’ is never a good enough answer for the people yourepresent.” He was quick to acknowledge the huge support he hasreceived so far. “The response from people at the doors and on theground has been great. I am getting unbeliev-able support and goodwill from people, from allareas and from all kinds of community organi-sations. People in the community have reallystepped up to support my campaign andtogether, we really believe we can start puttingthe community first for a change,” heconcluded.

Murphy Up In Arms

Local election candi-date for Balbriggan,Tony Murphy (NP)wants to challenge theCounty Councilregarding the closureof a section of the NaulRoad in Balbriggan, allegedly without anappropriate RoadClosure Licence beingin place. “I have beencontacted by numerousresidents of Balbrigganregarding the unduetraffic congestion expe-rienced by them overthe past month by theunofficial road closureon the Naul Road atMillfield ShoppingCentre.” Murphy, whois running as an inde-pendent candidate in

the local elections on23rd May, told theCounty Leader “Itseems incredible thatthe County Council haveproceeded with thework without theclosure licence being inplace and a propertraffic safety plan beingimplemented,” Murphycontinued. “There areinadequate controls inplace to preventmotorists accessing thisunsafe work site.”According to Murphy,

there are currently twoelectrical poles sittingin the middle of theroad, preventingcompletion of theproject. “It is difficult tounderstand why theCounty Council couldnot co-ordinate theworks with other rele-vant parties in order tocomplete the job in atimely manner and notcause such inconve-nience to the people ofBalbriggan,” Murphyconcluded.

Countdown To Local StudentEnterprise Awards

A record number of the North County’s enter-prising students will take centre stage at theStudent Enterprise Awards County Finals, which takes place in the Crowne Plaza Hotel,Blanchardstown on Thursday, 13th March. Co-ordinated by the Fingal County EnterpriseBoard, a record number of students from 22secondary schools and nine primary schoolsthroughout the North County have registeredin the 2013/2014 programme, starting-up andmanaging their own micro enterprises. At the core of the programme for thesecondary school students is, not only plan-ning a start-up enterprise, but also managing areal live business; learning to trade andgenerate an income during the school year.More than 580 student businesses wereestablished throughout the local region since

September 2013. This year’s student enter-prises aim to repeat the success of Fingal, when they schools won more prizes than anyother county in Ireland. Awards were won inall three categories, including: Junior,Intermediate and Senior including SkerriesCommunity College, and Colaiste Choilm inSwords. Speaking ahead of the County Final,Oisin Geoghegan, CEO of the CountyEnterprise Board told the County Leader: “Weare proud to have the biggest and I believe themost successful Student Enterpriseprogramme in the country. Is The EU Ready ToBe A World Player? This week, the EPPElection Congress willbe held in theConference Centre herein Dublin. Here they will select their front runnerfor the position of Commission President. Theleading contenders are former Prime Minister ofLuxembourg, Jean-Claude Juncker, FrenchEU Commissioner, Michel Barnier andformer Latvian Premier, ValdisDombrovskis. The winner of thiscontest is l ikely to becomeCommission President as the EPP isthe dominant party across Europe. Whoever becomes President here willhave a lot to deal with. The events ofthe last couple of weeks in the Ukraineraise the whole question of an EU foreign policy.Does one exist and if not should there be one?The British politician Lady Ashton, was appointedas the High Representative of the Commission, responsible for Foreign Affairs and Security, following the passing of the Lisbon Treaty. On her

appointment, most held out little hope that shecould make the EU a respected player on theworld stage. She turned out to be an effectivenegotiator in the many difficult situations whichhave dominated the world stage in recent years. So much so that the U.S. House ofRepresentatives have made her a joint nominatefor the Nobel Peace prize for her work with Serbiaand Kosovo in improving the relationshipbetween both. In recent weeks, her attention istaken up with Ukraine and the complexity ofproblems which it has thrown up. It is anticipated

that the Labour Peer will not have herappointment renewed after the elections.

Perhaps it should be, to allow conti-nuity in this emerging office. She hashad a very short t ime since herappointment, to forge a cohesive posi-tion for Europe on the world stage and

to position it as a serious player ininternational affairs.

The twenty eight countries which the unionis comprised of are very different in many ways. Ifthe EU is to become a main player in the field offoreign affairs, it must not only have a commonpolicy which all the states support, it must alsohave an experienced capable politician to frontfor it in difficult situations.

Dublin Airport HostsStory Wall ExhibitionYou’ve heard of PinkFloyd’s version but DublinAirport is host to its ownimpressive wall thanks to anew and interesting exhibi-tion currently on display inTerminal 1. The impressive‘Story Wall’, located on theMezzanine level in T1, wascreated by 22 wood artistsfrom all over the globe whocame together in June 2013at Glenn Lucas’sWoodturning Study Centrein Bagenalstown, CoCarlow. The artists -including carvers, turners, furniture makers and

sculptors – gathered tocreate a ‘Story Wall’ for theCarlow Arts Festival. The idea of bringingtogether all the artists withtheir different disciplines tocreate a ‘Story Wall’ wasconceived by Terry Martin, wood writer, artist andcurator from Brisbane,Australia. Having been toIreland many times, Terryhad been struck by thenumber and beauty of thewalls throughout the Irishcountryside and the storiesbehind their making. Thisinspired him to come upwith the idea of making asculptural piece based onan Irish stone wall. Many skills were used inmaking the wall, includingcarving, woodturning andsculpting. The wall is 6.5mlong and made of indi-vidual wooden ‘stones’.Each stone has been cutwith a chainsaw and abandsaw, carved to createa round finish, sanded andsandblasted. Many of theartists then carved on thesurface so that somestones resemble ancientrock art and some suggestrealistic vegetation. On onepart of the wall is a littledoor that you can opencarefully and behind it is atreasure - a traditionalChinese coin carved thathas a Celtic horse and anAsian dragon. So if you’retravelling through DublinAirport in the comingweeks take time to enjoythis unique and interestingpiece of art.

Byrne WantsElection PostersRestricted AlongGiro d’Italia Route Local councillor, Ciaran Byrne(Lab), has tabled a motion for theupcoming Balbriggan Swords AreaCommittee meeting, seekinga ban on election postersalong the route of Girod’Italia to facilitate clearsignage for the event.“The reason is simple. TheGiro d’Italia on May 11th is ahuge tourism opportunityfor the North County as therace passes through. Apartfrom the confusion that streetslined with hundreds of postersmight have on foreign cyclists

trying to follow a marked route, thetelevised images of our townsgoing to 165 countries would bebetter along the streets, without acacophony of garish posters,” hetold the County Leader.“My specific proposal for Skerriescan be extended to other towns, ifthere is a willingness among otherareas throughout the North County

to adopt the idea. If agreedat the Area Committee, I willpropose the idea at the nextfull Council meeting,” Byrnecontinued. He also put the proposal onthe agenda for discussion atthe Skerries Town LiaisonCommittee meeting, whichproposes that the poster ban

be extended in Skerries, in partic-ular, to include the period up to theRAS on May 25th.

Cllr. Byrne

According to three local FiannaFail representatives, sportsclubs in around the NorthCounty, which have a licensedbar on site, would see theircommercial rates reduced, under a new law beingproposed by Fianna Fáil.Malahide councillor, EoghanO’Brien told the County Leaderabout the proposed new law: “We areproposing a change in the law whichcovers the valuation of propertybecause at the moment, sports clubsaround the locality are being charged

commercial rates on dressingrooms and sports halls, as wellas their bar.”“Under the ‘ValuationBill 2014’ clubs will onlybe liable to be chargedrates on the part of theirproperty which islicensed to sell alcohol. This will free up extra

money for cash strapped clubsto invest in their facilities,” hesaid.Swords based councillor, DarraghButler, also agreed with this:

“Commercial rates can be a hugeburden for many local clubs and I thinknow is the time to redefine how thoserates are applied. I think people canunderstand why clubs would beexpected to pay rates on a licensedpremises, but those rates should not

be applied to dressing roomsor a sports hall, it should belimited to the bar itself.”Meanwhile. local senator,Darragh O’Brien, is also urgingthe Government to accept theBill, describing it as “acommon sense proposal.” Hesaid: “This would be a hugeboost for clubs in the NorthCounty and allow them to rein-

vest the money saved in facilities fortheir community.”

stores throughout the country. Speaking on the issue Quinn

told the CountyLeader: “The postoffice network is at theheart of the fabric ofour local communitiesin Balbriggan andRush. Therefore itshould been seen as avital part of thecampaign to retain thepost offices on our

main streets and to hold ourlocal communities together.”He continued: ”The closure of

schools, Garda stations andlocal businesses has resultedin a reduction in infrastructureand identity for our communi-ties. The loss of these services, coupled with emigration, hasmeant that the heart has beenripped out of many mainstreets within our communi-ties.”“There are many areas in theBalbriggan Ward that rely onaccess to their local post officeto carry out many of the func-tions of daily life. These areoften parts of the constituencythat have very poor broadbandconnection and do not havethe ability to utilise onlineservices, so they would be hitvery badly if their post officewas to be relocated,” heconcluded.
