Dublin Book Now To Avoid Dissapointment Council In Bind O v er Malahide Land A proposal to lease land at Wheatfield in Malahide to Naomh Mearnog GAA Club and a proposed allotment is to be revisited by local councillors. Instead of asking the council to rubber-stamp the decision, the local area committee requested another opportunity to discuss the plan. Cllr Peter Coyle (Lab) intervened on behalf of the Malahide/Howth Area Committee at a meeting of the full council where that committee’s earlier decision to lease the land was to be rubber- stamped. But Coyle asked that the matter be sent back to the local area committee for further discussion before it was approved by the full council. The plan is for some 1.81 hectares for playing fields for the club to be leased from the council to the Portmarnock club. There is also a proposal to set some of the large tract of land as an allotment. Coyle had earlier welcomed the deal as well as Cllr Anthony Lavin (FG), who said he was “delighted that the Council were making this arrangement with the club.” Further details on this develop- ment will be announced in the coming weeks. The field is on the Drumnigh Road, close to it’s junction with Blackwood Lane. The major problem is getting access to the field, as it’s position is very close to a dangerous bend in the road, which is likely to have safety implications. The only entrance at present is opposite Galtrim Grange housing estate, but this leads into a field owned by a developer. Coyle told the County Leader : “The area committee wished to discuss access to both the proposed pitches and the adjacent allotments for both short term development and long term safety. There is great demand at present for allot- ments in the area and many residents have enquired about the possibility of them being deliv- ered. They would prove a great amenity for the people of both Malahide and Portmarnock,” he said. He also stressed that “having an integrated approach to the development of playing pitches and the allotments is highly desirable.” Stephen Barrett (centre) held his 21st birthday party in the Sailing Club in Skerries. Local craft-workers are being invited to participate in an export trade mission being organised by the The County Enterprise Board. Flying under the Fingal’s Finest banner, the aim is to create new export sales opportuni- ties, which in turn will help the participating businesses to create new jobs. The Ireland Show is one of the biggest ‘Irish’ trade shows in the U.S. and takes place in New Jersey from 21st to 24th April next. Hundreds of buyers from Irish and Celtic Stores from across the USA and Canada will visit the trade show, where North County craft-workers will showcase their products, opening doors to the massive US ‘ethnic Irish’ giftware market. In 2011, the Enterprise Board helped dozens of local small businesses to grow their export sales by organising trade missions and grant-aiding businesses with export potential. In 2012, it intends to expand the export capabilities of many more small busi- nesses. Applications are currently being invited from North County based craft workers to participate in the forthcoming trade mission, which is the first in a series of export initiatives planned for 2012. The six small businesses selected will have to demonstrate that they have potential to export to the US gift market. Speaking at the announcement of the initia- tive, Oisin Geoghegan CEO of the Fingal Enterprise Board commented: “The world is getting smaller and with domestic sales declining, we have to look to market oppor- tunities that have not yet been fully exploited. The costs of engaging in an export trade mission to the US for a small business as a solo run are extremely high. By collabo- rating together, and with the support of the Enterprise Board, our craft-workers are now able to benefit from economies of scale so that they can exploit foreign opportunities and punch well above their weight, reaching global markets,” he concluded. Local Craft Workers’ American Trade Opportunity Boeing Dreamliner Visits Dublin Airport There was a welter of excitement last Thursday, 26th January, when the new Boeing Dreamliner 787, one of the most advanced aircraft in the world, paid a courtesy call to Dublin Airport. The Dreamliner was here to coin- cide with an aviation conference in Dublin and was available for prospective purchasers to view. However, they would have to wait until at least 2020 to pick up thir new purchase, according to Randy J Tinseth, Vice President of Boeing. The revolutionary airline is made from 50 per cent composite mate- rial, which is both stronger and lighter than aluminium. This gives the 787 unmatched fuel efficiency, enabling it to operate on 20 per cent less fuel. The airline is also 60 per cent quiter than the standard airline. Overall this leads to a much more pleasant flight, with less tiredness. Another striking feature is the much larger windows than the conventional one which have no blinds and the light levels are controlled by a series of switches. Sadness AtClosure OfIconicSwords ShopThe news that well known Swordsfashion and hairdressing shop,Joan van denMaagdenberg hasclosed it’s doors for thelast t ime, has beengreeted with greatsadness. The shop, which closed onTuesday, 31st Januarywas one of the mostinstantly identifiableretail outlets in thetown. Proprietor, Joanvan den Maagdenbergwas very philosophicalwhen she told theCounty Leader: “Istarted in Swords 28years ago and am 25 years in thepresent shop. Initially I startedwork with four people andprogressed to 16 only five yearsago. I had to cut back on staff andit was particularly difficult to getstaff to stay in the past year. Theoverheads are very hard to dealwith, but there are sti l l greatopportunities for young peoplestarting out now,” she said. Joan was full of praise for thepeople of Swords and thanked herloyal customers who havesupported her down through the

years. “Even in the snow last year, they still came to shop here,” shesaid. She maintains that the waybusiness is conducted nowadaysis much different from when shestarted. “We used to sit in theadjoining park and have our lunchwhen I started first, but then therewere no bin charges or watercharges to worry about. Theadvent of large shopping centreshas had a great effect on mainstreet shopping in particular. Theyhave taken away the vi l lage

aspect of thetown,” shesaid. Joan, who ismarried to aDutchman, isa very proudSwords lady and raised her familyhere. She was overwhelmed bythe amount of well wishers andcustomers of old, br inging inf lowers and cards. “I am verygrateful and I feel very blessed tohave worked in Swords,” sheconcluded.

Hollywood Lakes Golf Club is one of the mostdesirable places to play golf in the North Countyor indeed anywhere. It is situated in the heart ofthe region, between the picturesque villages ofBallyboughal and Naul. The club was founded in1992 and is fully owned by the members andwas originally designed by Mel Flanagan.

A notable feature ofthe course is thequality of the greens, which will test even themost skilful golfers.Because of its elevatedlocation, it offers spec-tacular views of thesurrounding country-side, right as far as theDublin mountains. Thislandscape also ensuresthat the slopes andcontours will provide astern, but fair test forgolfers of all stan-dards. Each hole atHollywood Lakes isdesigned to testgolfers of all abilities. The course cleverlyuses water features togreat effect, whichforces the golfer toconsider taking on the

HOROSCOPES

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18This is your week. Everyone seems to love you, offers abound and you’re feeling more opti-mistic than you have for ages. However, certainissues will have to be addressed involving olvedones or associates.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20Being something of a daydreamer, you’reseldom short of ideas. But what is ushered inthis week will be so abrupt and intense thatyou’re at a loss about what to do. Have no fear, all will become clearer with time.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20You’ve decided how you’ll respond to recentexciting ideas or offers. Others, however, areuncertain. Consequently, while you’re ready totake action, the week will be spent in winningthem over to your ideas.

TAURUS Apr 21 - May 20Accept the fact that nearly every day of thisweek brings surprise developments, both withcolleagues and loved ones. You will have to bewide awake to deal with all, but by keeping yourpriorities in tact will help.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20Surviving this week’s dilemmas requires you toremain open-minded about alternatives. Othersmay insist on commitments, but circumstancesand others’ priorities change frequently - and beat completely different odds.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22An opportunity for change. By the week’s close, both you and those around you realise thatmuch of what you’ve viewed as reassuring, wasreally keeping you from exploring certainthrilling, if intimidating, offers.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 23You’d like to settle certain differences peaceably- but that’s unlikely. In fact, everyone has some-thing to say - and mostly it’s about having theirown way. What you can do is keep your cool forthe present - until later.

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 22Nobody is more thorough about details thanyou, which means you’re rarely caught out byevents. But there’s no way you could have fore-seen this week’s developments - which couldbring overwhelming changes.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22You’re already under pressure from others tomake decisions. However, these don’t neces-sarily serve your best interests. The time mightjust be right for a fresh approach - that wouldappear to satisfy all concerned.

Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 22Golden opportunities aren’t always initiallyrecognisable for what they are. This is well-illus-trated by your reaction to this week’s excep-tional events. So much so, that you’re unsure ofwhat is wise and what is not.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21Certain individuals are anxious either to shirktheir responsibilities or blame you. However, confronting them just now might not be wise. The emphasis is on strategy, and it might bebetter to await another day.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19You’ve been examining various elements of yourlife, considering whether any attitudes or beliefsare holding you back. Now you find what theyare. However difficult, talking them over withsomeone close will help.

Pyrite Homes May Be Exempt From ChargeDeputy Alan Farrell (FG)has received confirma-tion that the householdcharge will be reviewedfor pyrite affectedhomeowners. Thiscomes as a result of thefindings of the reportissued by the pyritepanel, after raising theproposal during thetopical issue debate inthe Dail. Farrell said: “MinisterFergus O’Dowd, speaking on behalf ofthe Minister forEnvironment PhilHogan TD, outlined thathe will be givingserious considerationto this proposal upon

receipt of the reportfrom the establishedPyrite Panel. Speaking in the Dáil,Farrell outlined reasonswhy pyrite affectedhomes should berecognised as incom-plete, “Pyrite presentsa significant health andsafety risk to homeowners because of thepyrite swell in the floorslab which, forexample, can causeproblems opening andclosing doors, and initself requires consider-able remedial work. Ifundamentally believethat it is inappropriateto place the household

charge on these prop-erties, while there is anexemption for ‘unfin-ished estates’. I wouldurge homeowners whoare in unfinishedestates to clarify theirposition as some ofthese estates are inNorth County Dublin.

be reversed. Of course, unless you’re guttingyour entire home youcan’t swap the kitchenwith a bedroom, but bytaking a fresh look athow a space works, youmay find a better way to

use your square footage. The sofa positioning infront of the fireplace andtelevision is a logicalchoice, try moving furni-ture around and gettingan idea of how you canmake more changes.

Add Storage

Creating a new look inthe bedrooms is soexciting, as this room isso important to whoeversleeps in it. Childrenseem to accumulate a lotof junk and it’s impor-tant to keep on top of it.Try bright red, yellowand blue colours to givefunky fun. Bins, basketsand buckets are everyparent’s saviour when itcomes to conquering kidclutter. Store them

under a low counter thatdoubles as a play tableor incorporate them intoa bed. There are lots ofstorage bags and boxesdesigned especially forunder the bed.

Welcoming WindowTreatments

Don’t be afraid to knockdown a wall or two tomake a room bigger. This will take some plan-ning and this is whenyou can refer to yourscrap book for the ulti-

mate design vision. There are lots of ways tocheer up a kitchen andrather than replacing thewhole kitchen you canadd some improvements

to it. The contrast of thecool toned stainlesssteel appliances againstthe warm, dark woodcabinets and backslashadds a feeling of

contemporary elegance. The windows, however, are an opportunity toinject a bit of personalityto a kitchen that readsas right out of a kitchen

showroom. Nice blindsand a simple ornamentor spray of flowers canput the finishing touchesto any room not just akitchen.

Communions 2012To of the most importantdays in your child’s lifeare the celebrations oftheir Communions andConfirmations. These arelandmark days for boththe children and familiesinvolved as they repre-sent a significant step inyour child’s journey intoadulthood. As well ascelebrating the religioussignificance of the day, itwill generate greatexcitement, particularlyfor the children involved. There is a lot to think ofbefore the Communionsand Confirmationsbegin. Here we have thelist of essentials that willmake the day special forboth family and child.

The Outfits

These, will be first andforemost a key elementto the day itself. Theoutfits will vary greatlydepending on whetheryour son or daughter aremaking their communionor confirmations. On thebig day when childrenfirst partake in thecommunion ritual, boysare usually outfitted infancy white or bluesuits, while the girls aredressed in white satin orlace dresses, along witha white veil or otherhead-dress. TheConfirmation outfits areslightly more relaxed but

have to be specialregardless. The boysmight again wear a nicesuit and the girls opt fora specific type of dressand so on. There anarray of specialisedshops around the NorthCounty that will stock agreat selection of outfitsand cater for all yourother outfit needs. You’llreally be spoilt forchoice with all that’s onoffer so the friendly local

staff will be on hand tohelp you make theperfect choice.

Gifts

Appropriate gifts to thespecial Communion girlor boy might include apair of rosaries, a prayerbook or Bible, religiousmedals or statues, orgifts of money tuckedinside special FirstCommunion greeting

cards to help commemo-rate the day.Confirmation gifts arealso usually in orderwith the guest of honoursometimes given reli-gious medals or charmbracelets, or similarly toa Communion, gifts ofmoney tucked insideConfirmation Daygreeting cards. You mayalso opt for teen giftideas appropriate to theage group.

“Reverse Cuts ToEducation,” AppealsSwords School

The parents of pupils attending a small Swordsprimary school have called on their local politi-cians to lobby for thereversal of the deci-sion to cut learningsupport teachinghours.A well attended publicmeeting Thursday last,26 January, was heldby Old Borough NS,with distraughtparents appealing toreverse the cuts whichwill impact the 105pupils attending theschool. The cuts meanthat, if passed at theend of this month, theschool will lose out onthe full-time learning support teacher that theycurrently have, resulting in 25 of their pupilslosing out on the full-time support needed. The meeting was organised by School Principal,Anne Marie Woods, with a cross-section ofrepresentatives from all political parties within

the North County in attendance. Included in thisgroup were Local TD’s Alan Farrell (FG) andBrendan Ryan (Lab), who will vote on whetherto pass the cuts at a motion to be tabled by theOpposition in the oireacthas tomorrow,Wednesday 1st February. A parent, Laura Jones, whom also has a sonavailing of learning support within the schoolspoke on how she had gained self confidenceand self belief. “My appeal to you (local politi-cians) is to help maintain the investment in our

children,” shecontinued. “The OldBorough has done myson proud, he’sthriving; and I hope itlasts.” The OldBorough has just fourpermanent teachersand has also recentlylost out on Englishlanguage supportteaching.Meanwhile, school prin-cipal, Anne-MarieWoods was equallyannoyed at the deci-sion, when she told theCounty Leader, “I feel

this budget has targeted small schools in partic-ular with cuts. The loss of a permanent teacheris a devastating blow to us – not just the fineteacher we are losing but the reduction in staffsupport for all our pupils.”

Pictured here following the public meeting are OldBorough NS Principal, Anne Marie Woods and PaulineO'Shea, Principal of St George's NS in Balbriggan.

Has a certain someonebeing flirting with you and hasn’t got the nerve to askyou out, well this is your big chance. There are an arrayof shops here in the North County that will supply themost romantic card you can think of. If you’re sendinga card to your boyfriend or girlfriend maybe add asurprise engagement ring or a hotel business card, this will be a huge surprise and a big hint of weddingbells. There’s nothing more romantic and she’llremember it forever.

Surprise Surprise

Surprises are great between couples and add extraspice to a relationship. A trail of roses from the frontdoor to the bedroom, that then leads to a present is agreat giggle and surprise for the one you love. The oneyou love could arrive at their car and find a card orsingle red rose on the windscreen. Any of thesesuggestions are guaranteed to make the person inyour life feel special.
