    Te Chamber welcomes erra Carroll

Residents of Aiken, SouthCarolina have an unprecedent-ed opportunity to participatein a historic study that has thepotential to change the face ofcancer for future generations.Men and women between theages of 30 and 65 who havenever been diagnosed with can-cer are needed to participate inthe American Cancer SocietysCancer Prevention Study-3(CPS-3). CPS-3 will enroll adiverse population of 300,000people across the United Statesand Puerto Rico. The opportu-nity for local residents to enroll

in CPS-3 is being made pos-sible in partnership with AikenTechnical College, and H.Odell Weeks Recreation Centerduring October 23-25, 2012.

CPS-3 will help researchersbetter understand the lifestyle, environmental, and geneticfactors that cause or prevent

cancer. My mom is a two-timecancer survivor and Im doingall I can to make sure my chil-dren dont have to say that.I really believe this (CPS-3) ispart of the answer, stated onestudy participant.

To enroll in the study, in-dividuals will go to a localenrollment location and will beasked to read and sign an in-formed consent form; completea brief survey, have their waistcircumference measured; andgive a small blood sample. Thein-person enrollment processtakes approximately 20 - 30

minutes to complete. At home, individuals will complete acomprehensive survey packetthat asks for information onlifestyle, behavioral, and otherfactors related to their health.Upon completion of this pro-cess, the Society will continueto send per iodic follow-up

surveys to update participantinformation and annual news-letters with study updates andresults. The initial and follow-up surveys completed at homewill take an hour or less of timeto complete and are expected tobe sent every few years.

Many individuals diagnosedwith cancer struggle to answerthe question, What caused mycancer? In many cases, wedont know the answer, saidAlpa V. Patel, Ph.D., principalinvestigator of CPS-3. CPS-3will help us better understandwhat factors cause cancer, and

once we know that, we canbe better equipped to preventcancer. Dr. Patel added, Ourprevious cancer preventionstudies have been instrumentalin helping us identify some ofthe major factors that can affectcancer risk. CPS-3 holds thebest hope of identifying new

and emerging cancer risks, andwe can only do this if membersof the community are willingto become involved.

Researchers will use thedata from CPS-3 to buildon evidence from a series ofAmerican Cancer Societystudies that began in the 1950sthat collectively have involvedmillions of volunteer par-ticipants. The Hammond-HornStudy and previous CancerPrevention Studies (CPS-I, andCPS-II) have played a majorrole in understanding cancerprevention and risk, and have

contributed signicantly to thescientic basis and develop-ment of public health guide-lines and recommendations. Those studies conrmed thelink between cigarette smokingand lung cancer, demonstratedthe link between larger waistsize and increased death rates

from cancer and other causes, and showed the considerableimpact of air pollution on heartand lung conditions. The cur-rent study, CPS-II, began in1982 and is still ongoing. Butchanges in lifestyle and in theunderstanding of cancer in themore than two decades sinceits launch make it important tobegin a new study.

The voluntary, long-termcommitment by participants iswhat will produce benets fordecades to come. Taking anhour or so every few years toll out a survey and poten-

tially save someone from beingdiagnosed with cancer in thefuture - is a commitment thatthousands of volunteer par-ticipants have already made. Were looking for more like-minded individuals in Aiken
