Taris won for the first time beyond a mile in the $196,250 La Canada Stakes on Jan. 16 for fillies and mares at Santa Anita, a race trainer Simon Callaghan considered passing in the hours before post time.

After morning workouts, Callaghan said he was concerned the track was slow and

that Taris would struggle in the condi-tions. After the races began at 12:30 p.m., he conferred with Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens and went forward with the decision to run Taris. The La Canada Stakes was run at 3:43 p.m.

broke on the first turn, leaving jockey Santiago Gonzalez struggling to maintain balance and control before an outrider came to his aid in the stretch.

Oscar Party will not start again. Trainer Jim Cassidy said she has been retired and will be bred to Tapit. The decision was reached before the La Canada, he said.

Jockey Drayden Van Dyke, who rode Birdatthewire, said the incident with Oscar Party early in the race affected his mount, who became rank. Birdatthewire raced wide throughout.

The field was reduced from seven entrants to five runners after Honey Ride and Tara’s Tango were withdrawn early race morning.

Taris stalked early leader Illuminant through fractions of 23.93 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 47.35 for a half-mile. Stevens had Taris off the rail early and three wide on the turn before taking the lead.

“I had a perfect trip,” Stevens said. “I sat on her early and the fractions were real-istic. “The pressure picked up pretty far

out. She felt like she’d go long and she did it today.”

Taris, a 5-year-old mare by Flatter, races for Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and John Magnier. She was purchased for $2.35 million at the 2014 Keeneland November breeding sale and has since won three of six starts.

Taris won the Grade 3 Go for Wand Handicap at a mile around one turn at Aqueduct on Nov. 27, which led to the start in the La Canada. Taris had one previous start in her career at 1 1/16 miles, finish-ing sixth in the Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn Park in March 2014 when trained by Todd Beattie.

“It was nice to do it,” Callaghan said. “I knew there was no concern about the distance. Todd Beattie has told me she’d stretch out.”

Taris has won 7 of 11 starts and earned $807,700. Callaghan indicated Taris will make her next start in the $500,000 Santa Margarita Invitational at 1 1/8 miles on March 19.

The more he races, the more Mo Tom looks like a horse who could have a real impact on the 2016 Triple Crown.

His winning debut at Ellis Park last summer was slow but encouraging, and a subsequent sprint race at Keeneland show-cased a powerful closing run. He was a stylish winner of the listed, one-mile Street Sense at Churchill Downs on Nov. 1 in his third start, and rallied along the fence on a sloppy track – changing leads at an inop-portune moment in the homestretch – to get third behind two apparently good horses, Airoforce and Mor Spirit, in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, his final start at 2. And Jan. 16 at Fair Grounds, in the Grade 3, $200,000 Lecomte Stakes, Mo Tom ran better still, making a sustained run from the half-mile pole and pulling away the final half-furlong from Tom’s Ready to win by 2 1/4 lengths.

“Today, I thought his kick was the most powerful it’s been,” said jockey Corey Lanerie, who came from Florida to ride Mo Tom. “Before, he had a nice kick, but it was more of a grind, and today I felt more turn of foot from him.”

Mo Tom ran one mile and 70 yards on a fast track that had been producing moder-ate times on the day in 143.18, 0.20 seconds faster than the winning time in an older-horse second-level allowance race earlier on the card.

The Lecomte was a Kentucky Derby qualifying race and earned the top four finishers points on a 10-4-2-1 basis. Mo Tom ranked seventh among Derby hopefuls with 12 points after his win.

Mo Tom led a one-two sweep in the Lecomte for owner GMB Racing, which bought Mo Tom and Tom’s Ready – the latter trained by Dallas Stewart – as year-lings at Keeneland. GMB is the acronym for Gayle M. Benson, the wife of Tom Benson, who owns the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans.

Tom’s Ready finished three-quarters of a length in front of Uncle Walter, who was followed by Destin in the eight-horse field. There were four early scratches from the Lecomte, as well as Dolphus was scratched after rearing up and falling while being loaded into the starting gate. Trainer Joe Sharp reported that Dolphus was unin-jured and said he was displeased the colt was scratched so quickly without being more carefully examined by the track veterinarian.

One pace player, Fish Trappe Road, broke

flat-flooted and, other than a middle move into a strong pace, was never part of the race, but Victor Espinoza sent Z Royal to the front and set quick splits of 23.64 and 47.30 seconds while pursued by Pinnacle Peak, Fish Trappe Road, and Uncle Walter. Mo Tom, racing in the clear and along the rail down the backstretch, still was eighth at the half-mile pole but he into the bridle, and Lanerie crept closer, plotting his move.

“I was on the rail around the turn, and I didn’t want to go around everybody, but it looked like a jackpot about the quarter pole, so I said ‘Let me get out in the clear,’ ” Lanerie said.

Mo Tom surged strongly to reach contention, followed Tom’s Ready into the straightaway, moved to the far outside, and mowed everyone down. Tom’s Ready ran with Mo Tom for a furlong or so, but could not match strides with the winner late.

“I thought I had him fairly easy, and he made me work a little bit,” Lanerie said.

Shaun Bridgmohan was riding Tom’s Ready for the first time, and said his unfa-miliarity with the colt proved detrimental. Stalking in midpack on the outside down the backstretch and around the turn, Tom’s Ready unleashed a burst when Bridgmo-han asked for run before the quarter pole.

“If I knew him, I’d have waited a little longer,” Bridgmohan said. “I didn’t know his turn of foot was that good.”

Uncle Walter turned in a solid perfor-mance making his stakes and two-turn debut, and finished best of any horses racing close to the pace.

“He was a little light on racing experi-ence, thought he was a little bit green, but very proud of his effort,” said Mike Maker, who trains Uncle Walter for Ken and Sarah Ramsey. “To me it looked like he might have run a little spotty.”

Mo Tom, a $150,000 auction purchase who ran his record to 5-3-0-2, is from the first crop of leading freshman and juvenile sire Uncle Mo and out of the Rubiano mare Caroni, and has a female family loaded with stamina influences. He was a late foal, born in May, and has yet to grow into his tall, rangy frame.

“I refer to him as a work in progress,” said Amoss, who won his fourth Lecomte. “Today he made a big step forward, and I look for more of that in the future.”

The first three finishers, at least, are expected back for the Risen Star Stakes here next month.

It wasn’t easy, jockey Florent Geroux said of Chocolate Ride’s front-running victory in the Grade 3 Col. E. R. Bradley Handicap on Jan. 16 at Fair Grounds.

Chocolate Ride broke a step slow, Geroux said. The turf course, which was rated good, had been softened by recent rain, and Chocolate Ride was pressed in the early running. But at Fair Grounds, his favorite course, Chocolate Ride usually finds a way to win. Determination carried him.

“We couldn’t be happier for him,” trainer Brad Cox said. “He ran his butt off.”

Pressed by Sky Flight early, Chocolate Ride ran the first quarter-mile in 22.63 seconds, the half in 48.53, and six furlongs in 1:12.40. He put Sky Flight away and opened daylight in the stretch before hold-ing off the late-running Roman Approval to win the $125,000 race by three-quarters of a length.

Blarp finished third, another half-length back in the field of nine older horses.

Chocolate Ride completed about 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.21 and paid $3.60 to win.

“He had to work for it today,” Geroux said. “I’m happy for the connections and the horse. I’m hoping he wins a Grade 1 this year. I think it’s possible.”

A 6-year-old gelding owned by John Wentworth and Stephan Brochu, Choco-late Ride scored his third graded win. He won the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap and Grade 2 Mervin Muniz Memorial Handicap last season, when he was leading turf horse at Fair Grounds.

Sidelined with hock issues after finish-ing eighth in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs, Chocolate Ride resur-faced at Fair Grounds, where he won an optional claimer Nov. 27 in a tune-up for the Bradley. Overall at Fair Grounds, Chocolate Ride is 5 for 6.

“He tries,” Cox said. “He’s been training excellent. We expected a big effort. He gave it to us.”

When Chocolate Ride will run next hasn’t been decided, Cox said. The $300,000 Muniz on March 28 is the most significant Fair Grounds turf race. The final prep for that is the Fair Grounds Handicap on Feb. 20.

Among the Grade 1 races “on the radar” for Chocolate Ride, Cox said, are the Maker’s 46 Mile at Keeneland and the Turf Classic at Churchill Downs.
