Responding to the Call

Vocation Discernment Group

To support those exploring Vocations to the Priesthood in our diocese, a

monthly day of recollection has been organised for the first Saturday of each

month. These days will help men who feel called to ordained ministry to

discover more about diocesan priesthood and meet others discerning a call to

priesthood. There will be an opportunity to talk with and hear from priests

who minister in the diocese, and also a time for prayer and discussion.

The next day of recollection will take place on Saturday 3rd February at St.

Charles’ Presbytery, 224 Aigburth Road, Liverpool.

For further information, please contact Fr James Preston, Vocations Director

for the Archdiocese of Liverpool, at [email protected] or telephone:

0151 727 2493. Regular updates will be posted on our Facebook page:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

What kind of ‘unclean spirits’ afflicting some people do I encounter? Do I risk becoming unclean myself when encountering those who are afflicted? Can I overcome that risk?

THE ORDER OF DEACONS Archbishop Malcolm will be hosting the

second of two information evenings for men who might be thinking of

beginning the process of discernment and formation for the

Permanent Diaconate on 15 February 2018 at St. Michael and All Angels

Kirkby. After the Archbishop’s talk about the ministry of deacons in our

archdiocese, Fr Chris Fallon Director of the Diaconate will explain the

process of formation and discernment. Please have a chat with Fr. Mark

if you are interested

Bereavement Group Fr Mark would like to

set up a bereavement group to assist with

the many funerals that we have in the two

parishes. Two people attended the recent

Archdiocese training and we feel that we

can now start to formulate the Group. If

you are interested in helping can you

please let Bernie know. We are looking to

hold a meeting at the beginning of

February to discuss how the group will run.

St Benet’s Parish have a well established

group and we have asked some of their

parishioners to come and speak to us

about how they run their group and any

‘helpful hints’ they can pass on. Please give

your name to the office if you would like to

be part of the group.

GIFT AID ENVELOPES

Gift Aid envelopes for the new tax year will be at the back of both churches

for collection this weekend. If any boxes are missing or if you have a query

please see Jack Willcox at English Martyrs or Yvonne May at Our Lady

Queen of Peace

If you are a tax payer and you contribute to the church can you please

consider completing a Gift Aid Declaration. This means that for every £1 you

donate the church receives an additional 25p. It is a simple form filling that

means we can receive an addition 25% without any further contribution.

Please see Jack or Yvonne if you are interested.

CHURCH CRIB

This is your last chance to make a

visit to the crib before it’s taken

down

later

this

week.

RACIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY 2018 BELONGING - ALL ARE WELCOME On this day Catholics are called to pray for those who experience

unjust discrimination or are marginalised because of their race and

ethnicity. We think in particular of those who feel they do not

belong within our society or our communities because of this

discrimination.

As Catholics we are asked to treat all humans with dignity,

regardless of their background or circumstance. There are many

stories of alienation throughout the Bible, with clear calls to “Love

the stranger”. That the Church is a place where all belong is clearly

seen in the recent Feast of Epiphany, when Christ is revealed not

only to the Israelites, but to all of God’s people.

The theme this year is “Belonging”, emphasising that we are called

not only to ensure our parishes welcome newcomers, strangers,

and those from different backgrounds, but also that all people will

know they will find a welcome in our parishes.

ST BENET’S PILGRIMAGE TO WALSINGHAM

St Benet’s are organising a Parish pilgrimage

to Walsingham on the 29th May 2018 to 1st

June 2018. Recently 6 member of the

pilgrimage have dropped out for various

reasons and they are extending the

invitation to other Parishes.

The total cost for the trip is £260 half board

with coach transport. If anyone would like to

attend contact the Outreach team at St

Benet's on 520 2600.

‘FAITH IN ACTION’ EVENT Tuesday 30th January 2018, 10am-2pm at Linacre Mission, 123-129 Linacre Rd, Bootle, Liverpool, L21

The Steering Group of the Sefton Faith Forum have planned this event because they believe that the faith communities make a big difference across the borough. They are inviting the Sefton Council Chief Executive Margaret Carney and other officers, so they can hear about some of the work being done and can explore with us how we can all work better together.

This is an ideal event for church representatives (priests, religious, deacons, members of Lay Organisations or Parish Committees) who want to know what the needs of their local communities are and who want to work in partnership with others. There will be an opportunity for people to meet in geographical areas during the morning to discuss this.

To confirm attendance, or if you have any specific dietary or accessibility

requirements, please email [email protected]

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

We are looking to start a Fundraising Committee to try and generate

some much needed funds for both Parishes. The initial ‘project’ is to

try to raise enough to replace the organ at English Martyrs that finally

‘died’ last Summer. Since then the school have been kind enough to

let us use their keyboard for funerals etc but it really is a priority for

us to now try and purchase a new organ. Fr Mark has requested

some quotes from the Archdiocese and we are hoping that we may

be able to obtain one from a Church that has closed and this

hopefully should keep costs down.

We need lots of suggestions on how we

can raise funds. Hopefully, we can also

have some fun whilst we are doing it as

we can involve everyone in coffee

mornings, bingos etc. All suggestions are welcome!

THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

Friday 2nd February is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

when we recall the visit made by Joseph & Mary to the Temple to

present their firstborn son to God. Traditionally this day is also

called ‘Candlemas’ because candles to be used in church

throughout the year are blessed to remind us that Jesus is the Light

of the World.

Mass will be at 9.00 a.m. at English Martyrs where we will begin in

the church porch, Fr. Mark will bless the candles and we will all

process into church proclaiming

Jesus as the Light of the World. At the end of Mass we will move to

the crib and we will have the

opportunity to follow a Middle

Eastern tradition and kiss the Christ

-Child before the crib is removed.
