Class News Kindergarten This week our letterland character is Clever cat (Cc). Our sight words are: but, we, out, be The students have begun presenting their speeches to the class and we hope to have most of them completed by Friday this week. It has been great to see all of the students standing up in front of their peers and presenting their speeches. What we are looking for is Kindergarten students who are prepared to have a go and try their best and they have certainly done this. Well, done guys!! Thanks Mr Cook

1/2 What an exciting day the students had yesterday with a visit from ‘Nana Sue’, a librarian from Swansea Library. Sue is an outstanding storyteller and treated the students to a reading of ‘Feathers for Phoebe’. There were many smiling faces and lots of laughter from all involved. The 1/2 class then interviewed Nana Sue about the roles and responsibilities of a librarian. They will use this information to compile a written report. Thank you L.F. for making a Thank You card for Nana Sue. I am quite certain she would have appreciated it. Thursday 23rd June 2011 Term 2 – Week 9

In maths this week, Yr 1 are consolidating their understanding of the doubling strategy, Yr 2 are working with 3 digit numbers. Our class has achieved 5 PBL awards over the course of this semester. I promised the students that if we earned 5 awards as a class they would be entitled to a ‘treat’ day. Therefore, we will be having a pyjama day on the last day of term. Children may wear their pyjamas and dressing gown, bring a pillow and a stuffed toy. They also MUST bring their favourite book to read to the class. If it is a chapter book, they can just read their favourite chapter. Students MUST also wear correct footwear (no slippers permitted), that is, school shoes, covered sneakers or joggers etc). I am looking forward to the day. Also, just a note that most students are in need of new homework books for next semester. Thank you. Mrs Lindsay

2/3 Class Trophies Getting Along – L.F. She is getting along with her friends and enjoys sharing stories during class discussion. Working Hard –. Callum Irwin. Callum has shown great effort and detail in his work. He does this without disturbing others around him and is always ready on time. Organisation – Beatie Miller. Beatie is always efficient and ahead of time with her organisation and time management during class lessons. Class testing has been completed and reports will be out shortly. Mr Westcott

4/5/6 Thank you and well done to Eliza who did a great job working with Miss Cope during PE activities on Monday. It has been pleasing to hear from Mrs Lindsay about the good behaviour and hard work displayed by our band students at Band Link. Except for a couple of students who have been absent, the children have all delivered their speeches. It was great to see that there has obviously been a lot of practice happening in many

homes. There were also some really interesting topic choices. Well done! Mrs Hird

Star Struck Wow! What a great Show! Congratulations students on an absolutely excellent performance. I hope you all feel as proud of yourselves as we feel of you. We were thrilled at Star Struck on Thursday night to be presented with an award from the office of Garry Edwards (Federal Member for Swansea) in recognition of our participation. That was another highlight for the week, so well done, students. You worked really hard and supported each other very well. I would like to thank Kate Halligan and Jane Wood for their help and also the student teachers from my class, Katie Seal and Jessica Field for their generous assistance. Mrs Lindsay

Band News Students have just completed a 2 day workshop at Bandlink where they have had the opportunity to have intensive tuition and perform in a public concert in the Conservatorium’s Concert Hall. The benefit for the students from this experience can not be emphasized enough. We look forward to hearing some of their new music being played at

the end-of-term assemblies. A big thank you to Jake Debrincat for transporting band equipment to the venue, Elise Bell, Vanessa Smith and Jane Wood for all their help with supervision. A reminder that our excursion to the Opera House is on tomorrow. The bus leaves at 8:45am sharp and will return to school between 5:00 and 5:30pm. Students should be wearing full school uniform. They will also need to bring fruit, lunch, afternoon tea and a refillable drink bottle. Please bring these things in a small bag. No bulky schoolbags please. Band Fees: It has been a very busy term, so it is understandable that the paying of band fees and instrument hire may have been overlooked. Could I please ask everyone who still owes their fees to pay their accounts by the end of term. These fees are actually due at the beginning of each term. The Band Committee has funded some extremely valuable and costly experiences for band students this term so it is important that all monies due are paid so that they can be deposited into the account.

Nords-Walk-Athon Thank you to those wonderful families who have been busy collecting their sponsorship and returning their forms and money to school. Approximately 30 families have returned their sponsorship money so far! Yaa!! That is a great start, let’s see if we can have the rest in by Wednesday 29th June so you can eligible to be in the prize draw, as we are announcing the winners of our wonderful prizes (holiday to Port Macquarie, portrait pack and Rebel voucher) at the assembly on Thursday 30th June. Please support our major fundraiser.

Encouraging your child to read at home 1. Be yourself and involve your child in everyday

conversations from an early age.

2. Read aloud to your child. It will help your child to learn the

language of books and encourage the enjoyment of books

and reading.

3. Talk about books together - make reading a shared,

enjoyable activity.

4. See that there is a range of reading material for your child

at home, both fiction and non-fiction.

5. Read to your child in your first language - research shows

that using your first language will help your child when he

or she learns to read English.

6. Try not to let television intrude on reading time - set aside

some uninterrupted time to read with your child.

7. Listen to your child read every day, even if only for a short

time.

8. Give books as treats and presents.

9. Discuss the meanings of stories and words.

10. Join your local library. Borrow books for yourself as well

as your child.
