WENZEL’S WORDS OF WISDOM The Initial Steps to Beginning the College Application Process

This document should help you access information about the college application process, begin to understand the process, and get you started. Please follow the steps and utilize all the resources. I will refer you back to these steps and resources time and time again as you may need a refresher on the process, which is normal, you have a lot going on!

1. VERY IMPORTANT: Please be sure to complete and return the attached records release form. This

form allows the high school to process your transcript and records requests for colleges. Without it, you will not be able to complete a transcript request in Naviance and we will not be able to send any records to colleges. You can drop it off to the Guidance Office at the High School Monday-Friday between the hours of 9am and 3pm or when you return to school in September.

2. If you are applying to colleges using the CommonApp, you will need to match your CommonApp ac-count to your Naviance Account. Please check out the CommonApp, it is a time-efficient way to apply to colleges, if your college takes this type of application. I am including a video to help you complete this pro-cess. https://www.screencast.com/t/gxEQkElyo1

3. You must submit ALL transcript requests for college applications through Naviance. Again, this can be done after you have submitted the records release form to Guidance. Here is a video to help you with submitting initial transcript requests through Naviance. https://www.screencast.com/users/Hobsons_Naviance/playlists/College%20Applications%20Video%20Series?mediaSetId=77935f0a-33f3-4c37-9596-dbc76c260b3f

4. Once you submit a transcript request, please call, email, or preferably stop in to see Ms. Karen Volin in the guidance office to confirm receipt of your request (email: [email protected], phone: 330-908-6018)

5. If you are applying through CommonApp, there are counselor forms that I must also complete for each application you submit. I will begin processing these once all schedules are updated and transcripts are ready to begin going out to colleges (late August, early September)

6. Recommendation letters must also be requested through Naviance. Here is a video about how to com-plete these requests. I recommend you request these early from teachers (at least 2 weeks notice prior to when they need to be submitted) and be sure to choose teachers that know you well and that you have had an opportunity to talk to about writing a recommendation letter. These letters can make or break an admis-sions decision! https://www.screencast.com/users/Hobsons_Naviance/playlists/College%20Applications%20Video%20Series?mediaSetId=eccfdd78-3854-41a8-b806-15b1bf80bec6

Tips and Tricks: Remember that ALL materials have to be submitted and received by Colleges by their stated deadline. Do not wait to ask for recommen-

dation letters or complete essays until the day of the deadline. Colleges will not accept your applications incomplete.

Colleges have different procedures, be sure to keep track of deadlines for all the colleges you are applying to. This year especially, some colleges have moved their deadlines back to accommodate late testing opportunities, while others have kept them the same. Some colleg-es have different applications for scholarships and admissions, be sure to know each colleges' procedures and to create a calendar with important dates.

If you are applying Early Decision or Early Action, I recommend that you get all your materials organized and completed sooner than later. You can have an English teacher review your essay when you return to school if you would like. Some English classes will actually write college essays as assignments. If you are applying early action or early decision, I would not wait for this opportunity to do it in class. Due to the late start of the school year, you may not have it completed in time to submit with your application materials.

I have included a PDF I created back in the spring with additional resources to help you through this process under the revised process for COVID. You can find information about test-optional schools, essay writing tips, college searching virtually etc.

I will be available again after August 17th to help advise in more detail if needed. I hope his information helps you get a jump start on your applications. I look forward to hopefully seeing all of you in September!

State Scholarships Scholarships valued at $10,000 each

State scholarships are awarded to eligible students in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS WiseGeek Women in STEM Scholarship

The WiseGeek Women in STEM Scholarship is a $500 scholarship open to female high school students interested in a STEM career.

About the Scholarship

Although women make up nearly half of the US labor market, only 28% of the STEM work-

force is female. The gender gap is even higher in some of the fastest-growing and highest-

paid tech jobs.

In order to solve complex problems of the future, the US needs more women entering science,

technology, engineering, and math fields. Gender diversity introduces new perspectives and

helps improve the STEM talent pool.
